My previous post and buzzo4's post are both incorrect. Cape Malays were originally brought over to the Cape as slaves by the Dutch from their colonies in East Asia. Cant blame the Brits for this one. There is currently a small community of about 12000 living almost exclusively in Cape Town. The 140 000 people in Joburg buzz is talking about are coloureds (thats what they call themselves in SA). The origins of these people is not the same as the Cape Malays and they are not Muslim.

Originally, in the 18th and early 19th centuries, these were the homes of White artisans.

There are also "coloureds" ( mixed black and white) called that because the Brits could not keep their willies to themselves and were screwing the help.

Im pretty sure Cape Malays are originally from Malaysia. Probably brought over by the brits in the colonial days to perform some task like they did with the Indians in Durban.
