I try to offer the perspective of someone who lived there and suggest they be cautious. The fact that people are going to Hillbrow at night concerns me. This is not a safe place by South African standards, let alone world standards. Its downright dangerous and you are asking for trouble. For what? Cheap sex run by Nigerian pimps? Its not worth the risk.

My warnings are clear. Ignore them if you must but you play with your life when you do. They are simple really

* Avoid street walkers. Diseases, scams and police involvement. Condoms may provide some safety but when a quality girl is going to cost you $60 for an hour of fun you need to be asking yourself why you are looking for street action

A good virgin post, Wayne Roberts. After reading Noddy's concerns, I was ready to hate the post. It does contain some overreactions (and I think it is more of the matter of phrasing than content) but all the points are valid and powerfully expressed.
Would I go against Wayne's advice? Sure as hell I would. I would go to Summit Club just to see it. I lived in Joburg close to 30 years ago and people were warning about Hillbrow even then. Has it gotten worse? Yes, but a survivor of Afghanistan and Liberia will survive in Hillbrow. That's the kind of training that you need.

as a person who was born and raised in south africa, i thought i would give all those interested in travelling there a few warnings. this is not a safe place to live let alone go on holiday. people are leaving the country in droves because of the crime rate.

there is no shortage of hot women in south africa and no matter what your tastes there is something there for everyone. european, african, malay, asian. its all there and its all available at very good prices if you spending dollars and euros. one of the cheaper places to monger if you like european women in particular.

the problem is though that it is not a safe country. it has the worlds highest rate of crime. its not petty crime either, its violent crime. murder, [CodeWord123] and armed robbery are through the roof. its overtaking colombia with murder and its not gang related or drug related like it is in colombia. it civilian on civilian. 53 murders a day in a country of 40 million people.

tourists in particular are targets because they have money. its not just south africans that will rob you, its nigerian and zimbabwean gangs too. you need to keep your wits about you. they dont just take your wallet and your mobile like they do in most other places. there they shoot you for them.

so here are a few tips to make sure you stay safe.

* all this talk about the summit club? you guys need rocks in your fucking heads to be going there. seriously. its in one of the worst parts of jhb right in the middle of a suburb that even the police dont like to patrol. avoid it please. its not worth the risk. you are playing with fire.

* johannesburg and durban city centres need to be avoided at night. completely. especially on foot. even riving through them is dangerous. avoid clubs and brothels in these areas!

* street walkers. ffs, dont touch them! sa has one of the highest hiv rates in the world. these women are 90% infected. dont touch them! disease buckets the lot of them and most are there because they have very bad drug problems. not to mention a lot of them are bad news. they hear your accent, they take you to a place where your safety is compromised.

* police. dont trust the cops! if they catch you punting, they are going to threaten to jail you. chances are they are looking for a bribe! pay them what they want and act as innocent as possible. a lot of cops work with the street walkers. again, avoid street walkers.

* if you want to visit private venues, clubs or independents, stick to affluent areas. in jhb, most are in sandton, rivonia, fourways, bryanston. do your homework and ask people what the area is like before you go there. if you have an appointment in a certain area just ask someone that you are new here and want to make sure that its a safe place. the locals wont get offended and most will tell you if an area is ok or not. if locals are telling you to be careful then you really need to watch yourself. there are a lot of decent places in good areas that will knock your socks off. just make sure you are going to the right places

* escorts are your best bet. there are some good resources online. best of the lot are:

Marco Polo is a semi respectable resort / conference centre during the day and a place for P4P black girls from late afternoon onwards.
