I can't bring much USD into the country. I need to draw money from the ATM. I have been drawing money from the ATM in Nairobi, 40 k KES costs me 265 EUR right now.

Is this a problem right now in Harare? Could anybody explain to me why I shouldn't just draw ZWL from the ATM?

You were unlucky to spend that long at the airport. I have been travelling regularly to Zim for over 10 years and I can add some information:

Go to an Econet shop with your passport and you can get an econet / ecocash account, I have one and I have a UK passport. Cash is king in Zim and if you want the local currency you can pay it into the econet shop and they will top up your account although it may be better to do a deal privately for a better exchange rate, anyone can pay anyone with an account. Never had any luck finding any girls to have fun with so far, going back shortly for a couple of weeks and will try again if I have time.

Power was out when I arrived; they had one agent processing visa's for the first hour plus.
