So after reading a few post about the afternoon action at Diggers I decided to make a trip there for a late lunch. Parking is sort of stuff as far as I can tell. Not sure if there are any car parks nearby. After parking and fighting my way through all the Indian guys that wanted to wash it I entered Digger's around 2:30pm. My first impression was that it was too dark. The ambiance was nice. There was a lively group of people for this time of day in my opinion. I've been in Bahrain 6 months now. Didn't get a chance to post because my wife was still here and I had to get around the Bahrain Internet blocks here. By the way I use a VPN through the USA to get around the site blockers.

Last Wednesday (11th Jan) , Bahrain's LE began their routine raids right before F1 season. The first hotel to be raided was Andalus Hotel and they have now shifted strategy and are targeting spas. 9 staff members from the in-house spa (and this spa is legit and legally approved by both the Health Ministry and the LMRA and is rather decent and maintains a standard for which a very few spas have in the country. Those of you who have been here will know this as well) were arrested by the CID at 8. 30pm.

This was partly a planned raid and partly was due to the fact that the management of a competing spa (name to be confirmed) tipped LE off that some of the staff were not just engaging in a spa treatment but were also providing extras. Therefore, a member of LE visited the Thai Spa at Andalus hotel around the afternoon of the 8th. Got an extra after having asked for one (the spa staff were earlier warned not to have given extras to anyone under any circumstances as per an internal circular sent around to the spas from the Health Ministry 3 months ago.) , the particular LE member visited the spa again on the 9th with 2 additional LE officers where all 3 were provided with extras. The next day the CID obtained a search and arrest warrant from the Public Prosecution for the spa at Andalus plus search warrants (arrest warrants unconfirmed) for all other branches of the spa which included their outlets at Mashtan Hotel, Al Jazira Hotel, City Center Hotel and Gulf Pearl Hotel. Unfortunately, the group owner of all these hotels had earlier been caught on tape by LE when giving a 'gift' to a tourism inspector from the former Tourism Ministry 1. 5 years ago and as a result has since been subject to multiple court hearings and his hotels a target of LE raids.

A team of 12 LE officers including 9 women officers stormed the spa at Andalus on the 11th evening, all 9 members of the spa's staff including their receptionist were told they were being taken away for a statement at the CID HQ (they were asked then to not answer any calls on their cell phones nor were allowed to make any outgoing calls. A senior staff member however alerted the spa's management through Skype chat and this allowed staff at other branches to be moved away to safety and into staff accommodation). Since Wednesday evening, these staff (including those at reception and some who had no hand in 'extras' are being held at the Isa Town Women's Prison and those who engaged in providing 'extras' will be deported immediately while LE has imposed a fine of 10, 000 USD for all other staff members. Their employer has now returned back to Bahrain and formalities regarding their staff are being sorted out).

On the 11th evening, at around 10. 45pm, a team of 5 LE officers approached the hotel reception at Gulf Pearl Hotel inquiring about staff at the spa there (7th Floor). The staff there had already left the building after being alerted by hotel management.

Between the 12th afternoon until early morning of the 15th (today) , LE in plainclothes were seen stopping women of East Asian origins outside hotels around the Bab Al Bahrain area (most notably the blocks around the Standard Chartered Bank) , if the person was unable to produce a CPR (national I'd card) , they were escorted to the CID HQ to record fingerprints and statements and off to the Womens' Prison to be processed, there was one eyewitness case of a lady producing her CPR. A waitress at a nearby hotel who was continued to be questioned until the Duty Manager at the hotel intervened and she was allowed to walk away.

This year the raids appear to be well-coordinated by LE with other government agencies such as the LMRA, Immigration, Ministry of Interior (General Directorate of Traffic and Customs Affairs) , Information Affairs Authority, Housing Ministry, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Cabinet Affairs and the Shura Council.

These raids will continue well into the F1 Season inclusive of all the F1 weekend and race day and potentially 6 weeks post-F1. This is the yearly clean-up exercise the LE performs routinely and this year a weekly report is submitted by the Interior Ministry to the Shura Council and ends up on the Country's Leadership's desk.

Its a fact that mafia rings do operate in this country with both the Thai and Russians taking credit for both being two of the biggest problems in regards to [CodeWord908], drug deals and eventually money laundering, the government has brought down intelligence agencies from both Thailand, CIS and certain other countries where they work together with LE to try and break these mafia circles up. The raids which happened last week. Went ahead un-announced internally at the CID. Top LE brass were not informed either. There were no tip-offs for Andalus hotel. There seems to be a genuine effort to rid the country as host ground for these mafia gangs and Bahrain being used as drug transit point to other countries. Hence, LE is now going after spas, restaurants employing East Asians or those that draw in nationals from that region, nightclubs, etc.

Since this remains unconfirmed, the following are a list of establishments that most likely will have LE raids over the upcoming weeks:

-Kingdom Hotel.

-Pong Restaurant.

-Maw Restaurant.

-Hooters Pub.

-Ramada Palace Hotel.

-The Palace Hotel.

-Al Safir Hotel.

-Tabasco Charlies'

-Layali Zaman.

-Manama Tower Hotel.

-PARS Hotel.

Avoid the entrance and exit avenues / roads into Juffair, Exhibition Road, Adliya, Bab Al Bahrain, Marina Corniche, Naim, Le Chocolat. Seef, Sony Ashrafs main showroom area. Hoora; between 11pm to 5. 30am. There will be officers from the Traffic Department coordinating with LE, Interior, Immigration and the LMRA who are scheduling to conduct spot checks.

- There are many young recruits lately into LE. Perhaps there seems to be a trust issue with the old guard.
