i'm afraid that's not true: 6 months ago i had my external hard drive check and confirep001ed because it had porn, plus a fine of 600 sar (about 150 usd), and got filed (meaning if i get caught again i will be sent back and not allowed to come back to ksa).

Nakasa (a shanty town like area mostly peopled by citizens of Burma, Bangladesh, and African countries) is a hot spot for cat houses, with company available from ten Riyals ranging to one hundred Riyals. The quality found here is predominantly below average in looks and lousy (for the lack of a better word) in attitude.

Share Mansoor, there are portions of this area that even the police do not enter. You can find stolen goods, drugs, alcohol and for our purposes women of ill repute. The ladies here are mostly of African nations (Sudan, Nigeria, and Somalia dominate the group), I haven't sampled the goods available here, but have been told that the price ranges from fifty to two hundred Riyals.

Azizia, here you can find ladies from Pakistan, Indonesia, Eastern Europe and occasionally locals (Saudis). Just had a nice Pakistani girl (about an hour ago) from Multan, looks wise she was an 8/10 with a very nice rack, attitude was a 7/10 the cost was two hundred for a shot, no BJ or Anal. Rates in this area vary from nationality to nationality. No need to worry about that. I have traveled many times through the airport and have never had my Laptop scanned. You should avoid bringing CD's with naked women dripping cum from their mouths on the cd label. If you do bring CD's. Bury them well with your clothes. If you have a lot of stuff, put it on a portable drive and put that in your checked luggage. You will be OK.

I know what you mean about getting out of Saudi regularly, I remember a co-worker telling me he used to fly out to Europe regularly to stay sane. I probably will get 1 week off every 3 months or so, and I am budgeting a return ticket to California, most likely to be used to go to Europe or somewhere nearby (any suggestions?). More often than that, do the expats get away on weekends? and where to?

Understand the situation with ISG, can you get around through a proxy server? like I used to do in China. Yeah, understand about making local contacts, will work on that if and when the time comes.

Can't help you on car prices because my company provide it as part of the package. But I understand it's not too expensive. And petrol is dirt cheap!
The net is probably the best place to start.

If you've got a week to spare then Thailand is fun, about six hours away! But no direct flights, you'll have to change somewhere like Dubai or Qatar.
As for weekends, depends what you want to do. If you like scuba diving then of course the Red Sea is right on your doorstep. Hurghada or Sharm el Sheik in Egypt are close by and give great diving!

As for a proxy server to pick up ISG, maybe, but I haven't tried to be honest.
Never really stayed long enough to find out!

Sorry I don't seem to be much help! I try not to stay in Saudi longer than I have to!

The costs you have been quoted seem realistic.

There are quite good supermarkets in Saudi. My personal experience is more Riyadh than Jeddah, but probably similar. Jeddah is nicer to live than Rehab!

You won't need it anyhow. The scene is very difficult. Lots of foreign workers, Fillipinos etc! Best to try and make contacts locally in that respect. Wages for them are generally very poor so they often will try and subsidise their meagre wages.

I am bidding for some contract work in Saudi for 6 months or so (I'm assuming it's in Jeddah, don't think it would be in another city). I am paying my own expenses, would appreciate some ideas on the cost of living there.

So far I found:
Airfare LAX to JED US$1700 economy or US$10,000 business by Emirates.

1 or 2 bd furnished flat in a western compound (mura bustan, waiting for a quote) about SAR 70,000/yr = SAR 5,800/mth = US$ 1600/mth

groceries SAR 4000/mth = US$1000/mth

What should I budget for taxis and ground transporttation?

Anything I should budget for?
