About the girls in the Emperor. A lot of them work in massage places during the day. If you find one who speaks no English, but she has a friend who does and is translating for you, chances are there's a mamasan involved who's getting a cut.

Taxis in Yangoon usually ask $1-3 depending on distance. Short time hotels were typically $15, and the girls $20-30 all night if from touts, $30-40 from club. Some stunner fashion show models can go past $100, though. Food I don't remember but it wasn't very expensive (nor very good either but luckily there's lot of Chinese food). Entrances to clubs are typically $3-5.
So I would recon that with a budget of $100 a day you should be relatively well off, not counting flights. I did spend more than $3,000 in total but I am a big spender, and that would include internal flights, car rent, and generous tips to girls and touts when I was happy.
Don't forget that there is no ATM, and credit cards are not accepted (except maybe in the Strand hotel) - so if you run out of cash, I don't know how you survive and fly back. Better take a large amount of cash, plus the bills need to be perfect or they won't accept them. Local money OTOH can be as crappy as it gets and the small bills usually are - barelly recognizable at all below the dirt. They are usuless too, only used for bottled water, beggars and road taxes. The biggest bill is 1,000 ($1) so if you pay a girl the equivalent of $40, it's already a huge pile and almost looks like a million.

Maybe the novelty part plays a role too. It is still an exotic destination, unlike Thailand and Cambodia. I first stayed 8 days in Myanmar then went to rest in my house in the Philippines before resuming my trip, and I started with Phnom Penh, as I have not been there for quite a while. After two days I quickly jumped on a plane back to Myanmar, where I had a great time, unlike in Cambodia. PP has become incredibly boring nowadays. it's nothing like what it was. Myanmar, although more conservative, still has a bit of what it takes for a happy mongering holiday if you know where to go. For how long, that is what I don't know, and what I am afraid of. So better enjoy it while it lasts - though it's true it's for people who like to try other boxes, because if you just want girls, they would indeed be more readily available in other countries.

Posts: 188Wow Dingdong bell and meeone - thanks a lot
Sorry I got stuck in day 3 Just can't find the time to continue at the moment. Hopefully that will change some day.
As for fleshy guide, I am afraid that would be very difficult. The moment a foreigner walks with a local gal in the street they both get the look, and most of the girls will not want that - plus they can get in trouble with the police. It may still be possible, though, I don't know. I just haven't seen many foreigners around, and of course much less with local girls. Most of the girls don't speak English, and those who do (the educated ones like those at the Panorama reception) are the "good girls" who will not want to be seen as "bad girls". It's just my feeling, but can't say with 100% certainty that this is how it goes. It certainly is not Thailand or the Philippines where you can walk hand in hand with local beauties!
On my last day in Rangoon I did get a girl who was not shy to stay with me or walk in the street with me, but by that time I also had a local guide, so I made them both walk together in front of me as if they were not with me because I was not at ease by the way people were looking at both of us.

Posts: 75No point in trolling around too much in Yangon, in my opinion. Go to Emperor early (7-8pm) and there will be a great selection of cute, willing young girls who will go for k30000/35000 all night. A lot of them have no English but there are always 'friends' who will help with the deal. Leave it later (even 9pm) and the number and quality is already down. After 10, don't bother. Later, best place is the Music Club at the Parkroyal. Girls ask for more money ($40-50 short time) but some are good looking. Everywhere else I tried (JJ, Asia Plaza, Palace, Pioneer) a waste of time in my opinion. The better girls seem reserved for Burmese guys.

Posts: 7Rangoon - the short story
Haven't been since 2006 (or was it 2008?)
PROS
- girls only want all night
- no condom, no problem
- $16 all-night (has gone up)
- full service
- no shyness with blowjobs
- exotic: India plus Thailand
- enjoy feeling like I'm telling the US of A and international community to go fuck themselves by punting in a pariah nation [the conservative in me]
CONS
- Gotta stay in expensive hotels
- significant % of expenditures (hotels) going to Chinese/Burmese military/industrial complex [the liberal in me]
- double pricing for foreigners
- limited stay (30 days plus overstay charges)
- Thai and Khmer girls, even Javanese, are better looking
- not a large number of the best-looking gals
- food could better
- when you factor in all the costs no cheaper than Phnom Penh
- I look for a sex paradise I can rent an apartment and get a work permit. Impossible in Burma?
Conclusion: Svay Pak in Cambodia 1996 or Baby a Go Go in Pattaya 1989 were better. But can any place match them these days?

Dear Denon,
Congratulations on a well-referenced report. It reminds me of the academic variety one comes across with validation in almost every paragraph. The opinions you have expressed are also very valuable to those of us who are in the planning stages.
Stone and flesh monuments make for a very interesting combination. May I ask if you think it is at all possible to look for a 'fleshy' guide who could take me around the 'stone' ones and enjoy herself at the same time? Maybe compensation for the outdoors and well as indoors 'guiding' cold be a factor that could make someone reconsider her initial hesitation. I would like your views on this topic because I gather that country is still very conservative and people may not want to be 'seen' doing so many things they would like to.
When you mentioned that the English-speaking girls at Reception were of a good quality, I thought they may want to take a couple of days off and free-lance as guides. Naturally they would only be able to associate with guests stying at hotels different from the ones they work at.
For the benefit of other readers on this forum, would you kindly advise what sort of budget a 13-day trip came to (apart form the flights to and from Myanmar).
Cheers!
D.D. Bell

Posts: 95I'm going to rangoon end of next month, check the panorama hotel with directrooms, show it is full.
Do the hotel like Central, Asia Plaza & Thamada charge joiner fee even if i book a double occupancy room?
Which hotel is guest friendly other than above?
