I've spent a lot of late nights in Phnom Penh. Months on end. I've only ever heard of one violent mugging in 5 years.

I'm not saying it doesn't ever happen or that there's no risk or need to be on alert, but it's just not been my experience. I've been all over the city and done some admittedly dumb things, late at night, alone, walking home. Could be I'm lucky.

Extremely dangerous? Suicide mission? Meh.

I was going to reply to this in nearly the exact same way when I read the original post. Like you I have walked around numerous parts of town in the early hours of the morning when I didn't have the patients to deal with tuk tuk driver bullshit, never had a problem of the past 10 years.

I think like anywhere, if you use a bit of common sense, exercise some caution and aren't a loud mouthed trouble seeker Phnom Penh is no more dangerous than say, Melbourne or Singapore.

I'm talking today. In any area. They may even follow your tuk tuk, if you can find a straight one after 1 AM. The mob element will look after those that frequent their clubs and use their drivers. I am back in Phnom Penh again. Yesterday's bus ride from HCM with Sapaco was hell. Bus had a flat and we waited for two hours on the roadside. A similar thing happened last year with Giant Ibis. Coming back from HCM is always worse than going there. I wonder why. And it is more expensive too. $17 from HCM but only $12 going out from Phnom Penh.
Too tired to shag when I finally got in last night.

I don't think there have been many tourist getting mugged and killed this year. But after Hun Sen took out the Cambodia Daily (a real newspaper, hence it was opposition since it told the truth and didn't toe his official line), it is hard to get Cambodian news.

Completely safe in the tourist areas, where many eyes are on you. It's not that the locals like the foreigners, but they hate the criminals, and the mob element will try to catch and beat up common criminals.

IMO, even the deserted streets won't be that bad. Although I wouldn't walk around Tuol Kork late at night (actually Tuol Kork is getting developed, should be safer than the old days). But note, logically, since you have money, you will always be a target, especially if you out staggering drunk on a deserted area. But the good news is that crime against the tourist will generally be non-violent.
