I grieve for you experiencing such a viewpoint as you expressed. However, urging people who like sex to stay away is a disservice to other members of the board. I say that as one who has been enjoying same in Thailand since 1970 and Cambodia since 2000. The club scene has never really been a must for me also. Start with beers: try getting a beer in a beer bar in BKK for $1-$1. 50. Try getting a barfine on Cowboy or Nana for $10; try getting a short time for $20-$30 in one of those Cowboy or Nana bars. Or bars on Soi 4 in BKK. I've never paid over $30 for a ST in PP or over $70 for LT. And I'm not a bottom feeder. I haven't been to Asia since it closed down and has (mostly) reopened post covid. So, if you have just recently visited, the thing you might be missing is the fact that a lot of service providers still have not returned to the bars (same as in Thailand). Until more customers are arriving in both places, the numbers of ladies and corresponding acceptable offerings will stay low. .

Many people would've lashed out with ad hominems and I will be the first to admit that my writing on this subject has been suffused with more than a little bit of blubbering self-pity and hyperbole. There is a Facebook group named "Phnom Penh Hostess Bars--Girly Bars" that I would urge ISG readers to visit if they have questions or comments on their experiences. It can be a rough group sometimes LOL But worth a look and I think a perspective different from yours will be presented.

Funnily enough I recently had a conversation with the admin of one of these groups if not this very one on FB messenger and he said something that resonated with me- that at any given bar there are only 1-2 girls available for "take-away". This is the crucial point here and maybe not as you suggest something amiss with my presentation which I'm sure is acceptable.

I think there is a taxonomic difference between Hostess Bars and H**ker Bars that should be articulated and is the crux of the matter. In a Hostess Bar, as you will find in Phnom Penh, the emphasis is on companionship and entertaining the men, not on creating a brothel / bordello vibe where the girls are de facto available for sex. Yes, some of them are, and the possibility does exist, but the main purpose seems to be something else entirely. This is purely speculative, but I feel like it relates to the Asian practice more broadly of creating after work or vacation environments for business men to relax and socialize in the company of women. As such it is a social, group activity and not a lone pursuit of sexual gratification. This seems to be the case in Phnom Penh.

A H**ker Bar or Girly Bar as they are called in Thailand and Philippines is entirely different. Sure, some of the girls are not available for "take away" and they always have the right of refusal, but generally rather than refusing out right they will give you a very high price or otherwise look unenthusiastic and pined about it. They know that the expectation is there for them to go with men-it is the rule rather than the exception. Sure many men in Thailand will enjoy the company of women in a slow, non sexual manner similar to the Hostess Bar of Phnom Penh, but in places like Soi 6, and Soi Pothole, the overwhelming emphasis is on taking girls for sex. These places would go out of business immediately if only 1-2 of the 10 or so girls were available for you to enjoy carnally. A full 75% of Thailand red-light district business would vanish if this were the case.

I would speculate that attitude difference comes in part from the fact that Thai culture, Isaan specifically, is Matrilineal or Matriarchal and there is an enormous expectation on these ladies to provide for their families and send money back to their mothers, who encourage them to go into the business and probably were once part of it. Every single Thai working girl I have known exists in such a dynamic, where she sends money to her mother who is taking care of her child and as such they can't always afford just to sip drinks and laugh at farang jokes as they get groped. I doubt the Khmer dynamic is significantly divergent, but there seems to be a cultural difference here with more of a Patriarchal dynamic and more socially conservative attitudes. A girl working at a Hostess Bar can claim truthfully to a potential suitor that she is still a Virgin- as many of them are.

I would recommend Phnom Penh for a more sensitive and less sex crazed monger perhaps in the 55-65 age range. The slow approach and less emphasis on a fast track to boom boom will probably be more enjoyable for this type of guy, and as you say Sam, the prices for this type of past-time here are not bad at all. However, looking at Numbeo a comparison of Pattaya and Phnom Penh does reveal a significant (25-45%) savings in cost of living in Pattaya.

Bingo! I have always liked Cambodia and Khmer girls. The first time I went to Cambodia back in 2002. I went solo and I had a great time. The Angkor complex was amazing and at night there was this great combination massage parlor / nightclub in town with lots of pretty girls. And yes, I know there are freelancers that are a sure thing at Pontoon nightclub but I'm a middle-aged man- I hate nightclubs and staying up until 3 am just to get some poon. The other thing here is the cost- $40-60 for short time, plus a minimum $25 drinks plus barfine gets you to about $80. In Pattaya I was banging hot, experienced spinners BBFSCIP for 1000-1500 baht ST ($28-$42). So why would I pay a $50 premium for a scene that is more difficult and inefficient, for ladies who are not as good looking, and for girls who don't have a clue how to please me in bed? Why would anyone? Did I mention it's hot as hell here- probably a few degrees F above Pattaya.

Keep in mind I am the only customer in the bar and it is around 23:30. You could say business is not great. I walk over to the group of girls and just sort of stand their stupidly for a good 3 minutes looking at them. None of them even look up. Hmmm, ok. I guess maybe I'm in the wrong category of customer. I take my $5 beer and walk outside to another group of girls- mind you these are the hottest girls I've seen all week, and the exact same thing. Not one girl even looks up from her phone- which would be fine and everything if this were the real world- but I thought this was a hooker bar in a desperately poor country and again- did I mention I'm the only customer in the place that is probably thousands in debt a depressed post-pandemic economy.

It's ok, you can tell me and if that's the case I will just leave. Not a problem. She tries to say, no all people welcome here. I will not be coming again.

Last night after several nights of poor experiences I decided to go out not with the intention of trying to shoot my shot, but just to gather observations and experience the scene from a perspective without the urgency of trying to cum. I canvassed 118,130 and 136 street in totality, stopping at every bar and chatting and observing the ladies in the front for at least a few minutes, or going inside for a drink either by myself or with a lady of my choosing. The results of this were not good.

If I hadn't already pre-paid my hotel in cash I think I probably would be booking a flight to the Philippines right now. Two more bad days has me realizing that coming from 3 weeks in Pattaya my expectations need to be tempered big time.
