Anyone have a decent website that have learning the basic Cambo lingo for free. Did a basic google but nothing good came up.(some of the "free" sites were not free). I'm only interested if they have translating the words/phrases with sound. I could easily get all the written words but with language, I could never get the sound right.
May need it for my next trip.

It has been interesting to read so many so so reports about Cambodia-personally I am for them if they keep people away.
Yahoo-more for us.
Rodent and others complain of rip offs, yeah well this is asia and we are talking of the sex trade-what a surprise- NOT!
Some of you guys should spend your free time at home learning to speak some khmer or thai. It pays off in spades, at least one should learn the numbers.
You know how it is,if you speak some then they think that you must be able to speak more and prices come down. I mean it is 5 bucks at the chicken farms - how much cheaper do you want it boys?
And if the price in PP goes to 30 bucks in the peak season so be it.
These girls have to survive the off season, you know.
What is wrong with free enterprise anyway-are you guys all communists?
Have you heard of supply and demand, it is basic economics.
I have been in phnom penh for many weeks this time and I can honestly say that I have not heard one complaint from a barang.
Every man that I speak to has had a damn good time, bar none.
And as for the whingeing about the street walkers who hang around the monument-I would never pick up a girl off the street in Australia or Cambodia.
Why would you with so many available, pretty women here.

Thanks to everyone for their contributions here. I just returned from my long anticipated trip to PP. It was a very interesting overall experience. Before going on my trip, I had read everything from his board as well as many others as well as the history of Cambodia over the past 200 years. My readings gave me the opportunity to understand more of the people and their habits in PP. As for BM, the girls were more beautiful than I had come to believe from my readings. While many girls were rural in looks, there was always a few who were outstanding, perhaps even better than most thais & filipino ladies.
I saw and shag some of the most beautiful Khmer & viet girls in PP. However, PP has a very dark side to it's history & overall feeling of the city. Sadly, I did not fall in love with PP as I did with Thailand or the Philippines. The people living in PP appear harsher and more sinister. The predatory acts are performed by locals upon locals. It's not a place to ever relax. You must be on your guard most times. PP does exist to serve a minority of foreigners who have found someone that fits their unique personalities. But PP is definitely not for all. I may never again visit PP, but for the purpose of this board, some of the Khmer & viet girls who live & work there are simply outstandingly beautiful! Lastly, it is very hard to fall in love with any girl from any country who lies so persistently & consistently. I found that lying was a deep cultural practice in these very beautiful woman. Thanks to All!

To my opinion Cambodian have been teached by NGO and western medias that whining (first thing a taxi driver wants you to visit are the Killing Fields, so that they can take profit from your pity and guilt complex) gets much more then providing services. Once this bad notion is put into daily practice, it's quite difficult to reverse it. We could only if we were allowed to beat them, but that's what corrupted NGO paid police is just waiting for , so they can jail you and extort money.
I really can't see any solution for Cambodia apart forgetting it.

Remember, Cambo has one of the worst HIV infection rates in Asia and you cant SEE the virus just by looking.
Dont forget that their definition of "new" is very different from ours. I once picked a gal who said was very new, upon further questioning I found out new for her meant she was there under 1 month. Now being a cutie, how many guys do you suppose she had in under 30 days?
Just my thoughts

Although I do sympathize with your bad experiences and not having a better time while in Cambo, its just a fact in this whole country that they will try to extract as much money as possible from any monger. I have yet to be quoted the proper initial price , only after several minutes of haggling that a lower price will be accepted. This forum teaches all what the correct prices should be but its always up to the individual to negotiate it. Remember that this is SE Asia and the 1st price is never the true price.
But on the upside: once the mamasan or papa knows that you now know the correct price, you never have to hassle price again on a return visit to same place.
BTW: "Lose the customer"--they already know that most farangs are there only for Short visits in Cambo (few days on avg) so if they can get 3x the cost for your one visit then they are already ahead of the game as they dont need your return visit.
Hope you have better luck on your next trip.

Also, no one has good enough eyes to see viruses. You oughta get a checkup and be more careful.
Just my 2 cents worth.

I first traveled to Cambodia in 1993 when the Khmere Rouge was on the way out and the United Nations troops were there. I have been told by locals that the presence of the UN troops is the reason for the escalation of the prostitution trade in PP at that time. I have returned 7 times since and I have seen many changes in the sex scene there and most of these changes have been positive.
I have seen some scams and some great deals every trip and this is what I would expect in any country. As the saying goes YMMV. Gaudante makes many comments stating that Cambodia should be avoided and I really do not understand his reason to say this. Yes you can get scammed in Cambodia the same as you can get scammed in any country. However to only point out the negative and ignore the positive does not make any sense to me. A report should also tell of the good finds as well and if it does not then it is only a biased and incomplete report.
If everything that Gaudante found in Cambodia was negative then I would wonder why this happened as the rest of us have all found so much positive in our visits.

I'm really interested to understand other people's viewpoint in relation to overpayment in Phnom Penh.
I have been visiting PP for a few years now and have become accostemed to the $10 ST and $20 LT framework of charges. Requested charges seem to have been increased in the last year or two and now seem to rival the salary achieved by top ministers of the country.
What do we think is causing this and what can we do to stop the charges rising still further?
On my last visit I was surprised to hear of a Belgian fellow who was buying $600 phone for a girl and was then going to visit her brother who had 'some financial problems'. As the Belgian had only been in the country for two days the money involved was fantastic in the extreme.
When I visited Golden Vine Bar the girls were asking for $40 / $50 LT and a bar fine of $10. This seems higher than the expected norm but may be becoming standard.
Am I alone in thinking that we should be trying to keep the rates down to a level commensurate with the average wage for the country?
What thoughts do the rest of you guys have?
