I did not mean that you need to be outside of China to connect to a VPN. I mean that to buy the VPN you need to be outside of China as the websites where you buy your subscriptions are mostly blocked. So if you wait until you arrive you cannot download the VPN. But if you already have one it will work fine.

They are two entirely different things. I did some searching and Freegate is actually a proxy service. All browser based services where you enter a URL and login are proxy based services. A VPN service installs software on your computer and when connected your computer is essentially part of an outside LAN so nonbrowser programs will run as if you are in the VPN server country. This is helpful for programs that run independent from web browsers with location locks such as Steam, Netflix, Hulu or NFL Rewind.

I guess the best analogy to describe the two. A VPN essentially turns turns your Internet connection into a big Ethernet cable connected to a private LAN. You're protected by the encryption so you're safe from easedropping and data is secure. A proxy is like a telephone switchboard, proxy acts as the middleman and relays your request and passes the information back to you to you no encryption.

You do not type in any address to make your VPN work.

If you try to access the website of a VPN provider from China though, that site is probably blocked. You need to install your VPN before you go to China.
