Do not know about other country but during 2010, US started to issue out passport card. The purpose;"The USA Passport Card can be used to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry and is more convenient and less expensive than a passport book. The passport card cannot be used for international travel by air."

The hotel must register the date on the last entry stamp, mine is more than 2 years ago, causes no end of complications!

A passport card will not be accepted at any hotels in China. All foreign passports must contain a valid Chinese visa and entry stamp before the hotel staff can make photo copies of it then check you in, whereas in this case, your passport card is just a card.

Beware tho, do not check into a hotel that asks to hold your passport for police verification.

I am planning on a business trip to China this April and I have a question in regards to my newly received Passport card. I know I will have to use my passport for air travel, but what if I want to use my Passport card to check into a hotel? Would it be accepted? The reason is I am going to be stay in my uncle's house. Sometimes I can be really stupid. I didn't stop to realize that this forum covers many countries with non-alphabetical writing systems, such as Thailand, Korea, Japan, Russia and India just to name a few. I can see how it makes sense to keep the posts in English even though it's less handy for conveying uesable information about getting around in China. Names, addresses and so on can be supplied as Chinese language attachments for those who are so inclined. Apologies for my outburst.

Is always required when you stay in a hotel. It was always required when I stayed in a hotel, even for a 4-6 hour stay. I know of no exceptions.

but the clampdown over the past few days has not stopped the shady business. dealers work in groups of around 20 people with defined roles: men stand on each end of a lane on guard; dealers under the guise of porn dvd vendors ask passersby if they want "something special"; the boss delivers the goods; and his bodyguards administer beatings to reluctant customers and even urban management officials.

I've posted Chinese characters here before but that was before the recent forum redesign. If you type the characters inside parentheses, I believe you have to leave a space after the left parenthesis and before the right parenthesis. I think the same is true for commas and periods. I've seen posts here that have a series of numbers instead of the Chinese characters, and I think these were the reasons why.

There's a "test" section here on the forum where you can experiment with it to see if it works. Try it out.

And I agree, it's very important to post the names of places in Chinese, and if possible, pinyin too, so readers can print them out to show a taxi driver. You would be very hard-pressed to find a taxi driver in China who could take you to a place using its English name.

I don't think that kind of DVD exists of locally made porno DVD of Chinese girls. Firstly, pornography is illegal in China and girls are not willing to partake on those types of home made movies.

I have however found some of those movies made of Chinese girls, shot without their knowledge, in places in Taiwan a few years back, but have since been banned in even Taiwan as well.
