South China - Guangzhou

I am a British national moving to Guangzhou later this year and want to know the options for a little excitement when the mood takes me. Generally I don't use a mobile phone, so that probably rules out WeChat. I am not a "people" person so I am not likely to pick any girls up by going to bars (unless they approach me). I don't want to mess with anything that can get me into trouble with the law in a place like China. Maybe I should get a doll! That is for a VOA which is not the same thing as a 72 exception (for in transit to another country).

Previously, the visa (from the US) expires after a year (or was it 3). Anyways, I don't go enough to justify getting a visa. I believe the visa is for 10 years now which might make it worth it.

There is a free 72 hour visa for visitors from many countries. I am not sure how easy it has to pay for a visa upon arrival (usually must be done in advance) for longer stay.

Nice to know that they will put you up in a hotel. I might get one of those long 14 hour layovers so I can go out and play with a free hotel.

Because they gave me a free temporary entry permit, effectively a 24 hour Visa. I went through seperate lines in immigration and was put up in a 4 star hotel at zero expense to myself.

Spending time applying for a Visa and paying any money would have been superfluous and a waste of money.

The decision to not go try to find action was a seperate decision, that was personal preference and was entirely an option which was still open to me but I chose not to excercise.

My entire point of my post was to let people know if they have a 8+ hour layover on China Southern in Guangzhou, a Visa is un necessary as entry to China will be provided. By all means at least take a shower and go hunting if you wish, but why waste time / money on a Visa when you are provided one free?

In three months this may not be the case but it was last week.

I sort of gave up on trying to escape the airport and it turned out to be the correct move after all.

As was mentioned by I forgot who. Guangzhou is a hub for China Southern and has a lot of once a day flights to far flung places which makes for alot of long layovers. So they have arranged for anyone with a 8 hour layover or more to get thier passport stamped with a 'Temporary Entry Permit' which expired the following day and put you up in a hotel just outside the airport. In this case about 20 of us from various origins and destinations were whisked to the Country Garden Airport Phoenix Hotel which was a really nice hotel 4 to 5 stars much better than places I usually frequent these days it was a blast from my old expense account days of 20+ years ago. From landing on the tarmac to hotel check in was about 2 1/2 hours so not bad. We went through seperate lines and they explained everything pretty well and had a restaurant and I had a few glasses of Great Wall red wine which set me back about $25 USD. Better than the 2 nip bottles of Chivas which they they sodomized me to the tune of $54 USD at the airport lounge later awaiting takeoff ouch!

Nobody told me I couldn't go anywhere so as long as I made it back for the connecting flight I feel I was free to roam..

The beauty of the Guangzhou airport is once you exit the Customs and Immigration hall, head downstairs to the subway stop that is located right in the terminal building. You will need some coins or small bills to buy a token from the ticket machine. The machine has English. And just click on the map for the station you want to go to. There are many sauna / spas in Guangzhou. One I went to is at the Taojin stop on line 5. It is located in the Ocean hotel. See post # 2458 a couple of pages back. From the airport on line 3, you can get there in less than an hour. You have to change lines twice but suggest you don't do so at the Guangzhou Railway stop. That station will be a sea of humanity!

The Sea Palace has comfy recliner chairs where you can sleep, charge your phone and watch your individual TV, decent food and includes a massage with happy ending. All inclusive at 368 cny plus a tip for the locker boys who are the only staff not paid but rely solely on tips. IMHO a far better way to spend 11 hours compared to sitting at the airport. The staff don't speak English although the cute petite masseuse #16 did a little. When you are ready, just go up to the hostess desk in the rest area and tell them you want your massage.

I'd suggest leaving well before midnight to head back to the airport as the subway closes around that time.

I pretty much abandoned the idea of attempting to get any action. After shooting fish in the barrel that is the Phils, Canton looked too daunting and too much work with the 6 hour free window I had. Ended up talking for a couple of hours at the hotel restaurant with a cute chubby Korean Coed studying english who was in the same bus and layover window as me though going opposite directions. No action but a pleasant chat with an intelligent female with no motive which again after being in the Phils for 3 weeks was a breath of fresh air.

Again if it were the outbound flight where I am more like a man released from prison, I would be more likely to give it a go then the return flight where my desires have been satiated daily and nightly for 20+ days.

With the pace of growth in China this info may become outdated in a matter of months but that's the status as of January 2016 for anyone with long layovers on China southern. Hope this fresh info helps someone in the near future.

So I am planning to do a 72 hour layover on my next trip to Thailand. I RTF and still have some questions.

1. What is a cheap, girl friendly hotel ($30-50)? Is this even safe? I heard about police going to hotel rooms after the crackdown. I don't plan to use it much. Spa during the day and then a club like Kama at night.

2. Are there any FS spas? By spa, I don't mean a massage place. I mean some place I can relax all day in. From all the reports I read the past year. Everything seems to be HJ only. However, I have heard things are easing up although, may still be underground.

A foreigner in Guangzhou recently had 20,000 USD and 4,000 RMB stolen off him by a prostitute when he was sleeping.

The 43 year-old man stumbled out of a bar in Guangzhou's Hengfu Lu at around 5:00 one recent morning, and set his sights on finding a prostitute. The man eventually found a 50 year-old woman named Luo, who in broken English demanded a 500 RMB fee. After some negotiation, the foreigner got her down to 300 RMB, and the pair proceeded to get in a taxi.

After arriving at a hotel on Dongfeng Lu, Luo noticed that the foreigner had a load of cash on him when he gave her money. After doing their thing, the man then fell asleep, giving Luo the perfect opportunity to run away with his cash.

Police eventually tracked Luo down in Sichuan, and found that she had already spent all the money she stole, and it was also found she had previously committed a similar offense, and has been placed into custody. Due to engaging in prostitution, the foreigner was held for ten days.

As you are aware I have never mongered in Guangzhou, although I have lived for 8 1/2 years (in the last 12 years) in Shenzhen and Hong Kong), and additional years in South China and Chengdu earlier. (total of 25 years in SE Asia and East Asia in the last 40 years).

The more recent places of interest are HK, SZ, DG, (esp CP), ZH and possibly HZ. However, all (with the exception of HK) were hit very heavily by the Bun Emperor's yanda.

The Canton Fairs are of course the hardest times to find good pussy. In the old days all the punters would head to ChangPing, and even base themselves there.

My experience is that WGs extend their 'use by' date by shifting overseas where they find new appreciative customers. If they are young and beautiful they tend to stay in their home country and fawned over by the locals. I agree that there are always exceptions.

And remember, we all have different tastes. My preference is for a delicate Chinese courtesan, white tiger with pink puffy nipples. And I am even more fussy in my taste for Chinese freebies.

Actually, a number of Chinese friends have told me that there are VIP / hotel rooms upstairs for the rich. Well, perhaps the club has been remodelled, or maybe just that you did not qualify.
