Sound like a good idea to me, but want to make sure that is the truth indeed, and nobody checks who I am taking with me.

If you stay in Airbnb or other private accomodation you are supposed to register with the police. Staying in a hotel this is done for you when you register.

Also as to che king who you have with you depends on the neighbourhood and how well it is supervised, for example if it is a gated community is there a guard house at the community gate.

Adding some detail to the more discrete spot on Fahuazhen near Yanan station that was posted about just before pooh bear came to town.

No problems 2 weeks ago. But I used the elevators on the first floor, taking the steps outside the entrance to get there.

I've heard hotels are getting harder. Anyone have trouble at the Portman or have to sign a girl in lately? I never have had too.
