Given the current weather in Shanghai, is it safer to simply go to in-house spas or saunas in those 4 or 5 star hotels? I assume full service is available at those places.

M and J's are usually better at 130 than you say they are now. I believe what you are saying. I can verify 130-3:00 am usually are filled with the girls coming back through for a second customer. If you are down to 3-4 options, that is not what I have ever seen there. Granted, I usually go Friday and Saturday night. If you were there on a Monday or Tuesday it would be lighter. Sunday can also be hit and miss but stilll better than what you are talking about.

If you have time, hit M / J's between 1030 and midnite as steve stated. With the bad weather, it may not be any better however.

I've tried pesterers and loiterers a few times, and the vast majority of the time it's a total waste. They have zero incentive to do a good job because they know or think your traveling through and not a potential repeat customer. And they don't care about their reputation since they don't work for an agency and you have no one to complain to. They will upsell you in the room, and they will rush. They will rush big time. BTW, if they insist on going to a bar or to their place, then it's a scam 99% of the time.

Desolation. Is this the place reported here so many times as "best option in Shanghai for foreigners"?

I took a rikshaw to go to Portman hotel to save me the last 30 minutes of walking. He hijacked me to take me to some "lady's bar" at south on a road perpendicular to NAnjing Rd. All empy. Some Chinesed ladyes around 30 sitting outside.

Well, there have been lots of reports of "bad weather" recently (aka LE crackdowns) so I would expect everywhere to be light. When I rave about Manhattan (one of my faves) I always go in prime time 10:30 or so. I always find it packed with hotties. I don't know about later but heard the good ones are snapped up by then. Sorry you are having trouble. Try earlier at Manhattann. Because other than M and J Shanghai is a pussy wasteland for a foreigner.

I enjoyed your report. Brought back memories of a 2013 walk between the Hilton and Manhattan during Grand Prix weekend. I think I got propositioned and or groped at least twice per block. I was lucky in the end though, met a nice Chinese lady at Manhattan who gave great service.

Massive operations around Shanghai, Suzhou, Jiaxiang and other surrounding cities. There are even clips of police officials holding meetings pertaining to the entertainment sector that includes massage, spas, KTV, mahjong parlors, etc. There was even one that was about massages are only to be given by the same gender or risk being shut.

However, there are still places open but I wouldn't risk it. There are also those that are in apartments. Those seem to be a more viable option if you really have an itch. I would still advise against it.

There's definitely more police, surveillance and censorship because of this 30 year anniversary. But yeah, I don't see how what you describe would be related. I just reported in my previous post my last experience in MP. So not so shufu!

After I went in the bund at about 9.00 and was accosted at least 4 times!

This is for sure bad weather but small brother asked me to brave difficulties! So I went to MP on jianshan road my regular one on Friday. It is a 278 rmb for session with he. This time I walked in and the guy placed LE in a room à usual. Hi surprise faucet and sliding door of the shower removed. The first girl coming was a 40 years old girl, I refused and second one was a 28 acceptable. This was the first time I was proposed at first an ugly one! I ask the girl why no shower she say now just 3 shower and I can go the shower but need to step outside the room. I refused and installed myself on the table.
