Sound advice, but I don't understand the meaning of an "unregistered weChat account", and what is the advantage of the lack of registration from a security point of view.

The Chinese govt wants everyone to link their sim card to their identity. In fact, it's now the law. The phone number connected to the sim card is used to establish a wechat account. In that manner, the govt always knows who has said what on wechat.

If you establish the wechat acct with a foreign number, or better yet, use a Chinese sim card in someone else's name, that's safer. Some of the 5 star hotels sell sim cards for tourists (as a convenience). Those are a good option.

Not sure which or how many girls were tracked but at least one were. I believe it was one of the Chinese girls. Don't believe any of the Viet girls were caught in the raid that night but I have no information on if any were caught afterwards. If you contacted the girls directly it should be OK. It is very risky if you contacted Judy.

14 Total guys, 12 Foreigners, 1 Chinese national from the US, 1 Chinese national that lived in Shanghai.

Alright boys, I was one of the fellows that fell into the mess at the end of August, using sng. Everyone that was caught that night had contacted the girls via Judy within at least the last TWO weeks. Steve and Judy were both caught. From what I know they got to Judy first and used her wechat to find some of us. Also a couple of the girls were being trailed by LE for at least two weeks. The order for these busts came from up high, beyond the police chief of shanghai. Bribes did not work, one person claimed to of tried a 100 k rmb bribe.

Once caught we were detained for 24 hours then issued a 10-15 day "Administrative Detention" only 1 call allowed prior being sent to detention location where embassies were contacted in around 3-5 days, no other outside contact beyond that. While there more shanghai locals came in, we were the only foreigners. During the 8th or 9th day, rumors of more raids came in from spas, MP, and saunas, a total of 80-100 detained.

The Administrative detention is considered a slap on the wrist and as far as I know will not impact employment directly unless your employer has connections and decide to dig deep but you will have to explain going missing for 10-15 days. 2 were let go with a 500 rmb fine, I do not know the reasons why..

As far as I know the raids might go on for a bit longer and might extend into November. If you contacted Judy in the last month I suggest staying away from shanghai, at least 2 foreigners were brought in and detained TWO weeks after the fact. They will go to your hotel to pick you up and look up hotel security cameras for proof of girls entering and leaving your room.

If you do get caught, put on 2 pairs of shirts and 2 pair of boxers and if you can 2 pair of pants, you will need it.

While current crackdown is undeniable, no reason to create hysteria. The Viet girls from Judy's and Manhattan are constantly returning home (and coming back).

This is a big party congress. Crackdown is proportionately big but we have no evidence it will be lasting.

Having said that, LE has never clamped down on private (non-pimped) arrangements, such as those between a man and woman at a bar. Also, SNG females appear still working privately. So there are options that LE is unlikely to care about. Focus in China is always on the businesses that profit directly.

Even in the USA, having a woman come to your apartment or hotel is relatively safe. LE only wants to hit the businesses, or lure Johns into their own traps.

Bottom line: Let's focus on facts and share info. Personally, I would not go into a sauna or illicit massage parlor at this time. But I'll work with known providers, or enjoy the game of trying to seduce legit massage therapists. Hopefully, saunas will be back.

A: Important people from all over China are now jockeying for power. Sending reporters / LE to busy local houses of sin to embarrass city officials in the press could derail an opponent's career at this sensitive moment in time. Variations on this theme happen all over the world, not just China. The only defense is to be squeaky clean.

Q: Why have some bars with foreign WGs and customers stayed relatively untouched over the years?

A: The Chinese people seem less concerned about foreigners screwing each other than they are about their own people. If foreigners screw each other, maybe they will leave Chinese girls alone.

Q: Will they go after individual arrangements on Wechat, etc?

A: I can't imagine less bang for the LE buck. China is not puritanical. Big business on wechat is another story.

Yeah, foreigners are not the target. We're collateral damage. Most saunas almost never see a foreigner.

Private arrangements are fairly safe since they are hard to convict, even under Chinese law (with few rights for accused). The Chinese shut down prostitution in a few other cities because they were becoming Pataya. Not the case with Shanghai.

My only concern was belonging to a WeChat group where I didn't know all the members in real life. In one past version some poorly vetted chat members ruined one KTV organizing chat-room by posting craploads of fecal porn. Not everyone's cup of tea. I am pretty certain that my chats with providers I have connections with are genuine. That is to say that they haven't been detained and so I sure that I am not actually chatting up someone from Shanghai PD. I base that on references to our prior relationship and the level of grammar and vocabulary being consistent with what I know of these women. Also continued posts to their moments showing their life moving along that are consistent with our conversations.

So I guess if a provider stopped posting pics of her life and times in SH and suddenly her english got much better or much worse you might have concerns but short of that I think WeChat as a social media is not monitored by China's NSA, at least not for these purposes. I could be wrong but then we're all busted.

I'd use wechat as long as the phone is not linked to my ID. Technically, any Chinese phone number should be linked to the user's ID. So it's smart to maintain one wechat for regular interaction and an anon wechat for mongering.

I realize that sounds a bit paranoid, but given that this sort of crackdown is unprecedented and Chinese authorities have proven unpredictable recently, maybe I should ask her to delete our conversations?

Not sure that would even help since all messages are at the government's disposal in the WeChat database.

I went to a MP today. They wouldn't even do oil massage, despite it being on the menu. And I had to wear my boxers under their blue shorts. They're all expecting to be raided any minute.

The girl did say she expected it to return to 'normal' on October 19th. We'll see.

I remember when several saunas shut down last year. Huge, 5-star one never reopened. Massage places stopped showers in room for some reason. We'll see how landscape looks when dust settles after Party Congress.
