I too, have stayed at both places. The Hilton was always very friendly. BTW, what is it becoming effective 2018? The Portman is your best bet and also you can meet girls in the bar and take them to your room from there.

I've stayed at the Shanghai Equatorial Hotel in the past. It's just down the street from the Hilton. Has anyone tried that lately, to confirm that it is still girl-friendly?

But sadly it is no longer a Hilton January 2018. I am looking for a new hotel close to Judy's. The Portman is the closest. I believe it to be Girl friendly. I just wanted to check on anyone's recent experiences since the weather changes.

What other 4/ 5 star western hotels near Judy's fit the bill? (nearby, girl friendly and around 1200 rmb / night or less. Looking for suggestions.

Advantage of Ritz Portman is you enter through back (same street as Manhattan) into the garage. Then ride office elevator to 4th floor, walk across to hotel elevator and you never pass through the lobby. Works like a charm, no walk of shame and you don't even need to pay taxi from Judy's to hotel.

Used the Swissotel two weeks ago, booked a standard room last minute for 1000 RMB / night. No girl friendly on a Saturday night.

Thanks for all those who replied.

I use a VPN, based in the US, ran by Chinese Ex-pats, so I am not surprised that it got blocked (and continued to be blocked) because it is very popular among the locals. I was going to switch over to Express VPN or Nord, but according to the article, all VPN providers will be blocked. They are working with China TeleCom, China Mobile and UniComm to block access to them. I do not want to take out one years subscription and found out in 3 months that it will be worthless.

Between the goverment's actions on VPNs and naughty businesses, it is getting very frustrating.

I am glad that the Lantern is working again, but it was on and off for about two weeks.

I am also glad that I kept my ExpressVPN account even though I thought Lantern is wonderful.

I never know if I will need a backup solution.

If I do return to the states, I will probably fix myself a very private VPN.

There are also rumors that IPV6 is inherently incompatible with the GFW.

Which is why China is so interested in setting the 5 G standard which will be compatible with the wall.
