My experience is somewhat different. I've found that many of the girls in Changyi Lu (and similar) bars are available, but you have to go according to the bar rules. As others have commented, their main purpose in life is to drain your wallet by getting you to buy drinks for them, their friends, and anyone else they can find to swell the bill. Changyi Lu used to be low-pressure in that respect but they all seemed to get more pushy last summer, as a result of which I simply stopped going for several months and told the owners why. (Even at its worst it was never as bad as the nearby "Office" complex on Pudong Avenue. Most of those bars and girls seem to have relocated around the corner from Manhattan where they do their screaming harpie act as Aniki88 described). To get back to the point, the bar owners want the girls there earning money until the very last customer leaves. If you want to arrange to take them out you'll either have to wait until close to dawn or pay quite heavily for "lost income". I know one bar insists the girl earns ten drinks before she leaves, so you're looking at a barfine of 500 or 600 rmb. On top of whatever you negotiate with the girl for her time. It is not difficult to arrange this. If your appearance and behaviour are not too scary you can ask one of the girls who is available. Last weekend I was actually asked if I needed a "take-out" as closing time approached, and invited to indicate who I might prefer. As long as you treat the girl well and pay the agreed amount word will get around and you won't need to go home alone too often.

At the other end of the bar scene I was in a high-end hotel bar a few weeks ago and saw a neatly dressed girl sitting at the bar, could have been a business lady but turned out to be a very discreet working girl.
