A few weeks ago, I had posted for help looking for some straight massage places in Jin'An area. Thanks to everyone, I received several replies. In the end I picked Yu Massage. Wu Yuan Lu #366. Atmosphere is nice, service is professional. 90 mins for RMB 255.

If you're someone like me who like it with a lot of pressure, chose either #9 or #19.

I am pretty much unfamiliar with Shanghai's locations and habits, but walked around for some hours over the weekend and finally decided to try an MP around the corner of the Howard Johnson Hotel at Caijing University, not far from the intersection with Zheng Li Lu. The name is something Zhong Yuan, the street name is Ji Pu Lu. Signs outside all Chinese, inside an English menu that points to various YouYa / Oil Massage items. (I looked around for a long time, and it seemed to me that most of the MPs are FS service places where you cannot expect a decent regular or HE massage, is that correct?).

I picked the 168 RMB / 80 min package, the next one would have been 218, I think, and seems the difference was in duration rather than nature (but after reading some of the posts here, maybe it had to do with the amount of clothes?). Number 18 came in and started the regular chit-chat, married or not, rich or not, etc. At some point she decided to change her story from her being married to being single and yes, she would come home with me the next day and be my girlfriend.

I am not posting here because anything spectacular was experienced (ok oil massage with HE and a bit of careful boob-groping) , but because I keep reading these forum posts and there seems to be an understanding that in Shanghai the girls are expected to be tipped for HE. In this case. 168 was all-inclusive, and she never asked for a tip (I, having lived in Beijing for a long time, never offered one, as it is not the habit there). You should enjoy sauna instead of trying out outcall. I was in Shanghai but now in Beijing. Beijing only has outcalls. Just tried one and service level is no where near sauna in Shanghai. Not to mention you cannot choose.

another way to get a short term place to meet up without having to go through the hassle of registration is to use bath houses.

there is a masseuse i once started seeing quite often and we decided to see each other outside of the massage parlor itself so we can "go the whole way". she is the one that suggested that we meet at a bath house. the one we went to is the "jinlyu bathouse" or something like that. it's on the yan'an service road, on the side of the street heading east from hongqiao airport, about 500m west of hongmei road. it is now under renovation, but i have seen similar bathhouses rep001tered around shanghai.

the process is that you go in to the bath house with the girl and tell them that you'll both be using the bath facilities. as long as it's not too late at night (say before 8pm or so) , they will not ask for you i'd (at least that has been my experience). they then take your shoes (so you don't run away i think has been suggested before, and sounds likely) and you go to the shower area (there is a mens' side and a womens' side). after showering you meet by the elevators and then go up to the floor where they have use by the hour rooms. they will show you to room, offer you drinks (or food, though i've never had any) and then leave you on your own. you can stay for as short or as long as you want.

once done, you go back down, take your showers in your respective locker / shower room areas and then meet at reception. pay the bill and done. no ids needed, and the price is pretty reasonable (i think my total bill comes to about 200 rmb most of the time).

LOL no,"The Apartment" is a regular bar / club on 47 Yongfu Lu, quite popular among foreigners. I was there personally, not a nice experience but as I mentioned no problem if you have proper documents.

Yongfu Lu is infamous for its weed dealers on the street. After midnight it virtually turns into a pedestrian zone, loads of people on the street having drinks and enjoying the street food (they used to sell the best curry sausages in Shanghai from a van there but its no longer available)

Just heard rumors about similar checks in Mint, however not confirmed yet.

After the incidents in Beijing, LE now seems to get down to business also in Shanghai.

Yesterday several places along Yongfu Lu (eg. Apartment) were raided by police. Some 50 policemen were checking passports and visas of foreigners.

Nothing to worry about if you have valid documents but it might be a good idea to be a bit more careful in the next few days.

Make sure you carry a copy of your passport / visa / residence or working permit. I took pictures and saved them in my phone, this is usually good enough.

I'm not sure how Bath Houses work, because from what I have experienced, the male and female guests are lead to different floors and exclusive lounges. The only place that male and female guests can mingle is the cafeteria.

I noticed some of them do function as a hotel and provide rooms with real beds, but to rent out a room would require registration.

Your visa residence permit will be scanned. Probably no true by modem. Broad band has arrived in China too.

Fact is, you have to register wherever you go. If you stay private you should register with the local police station. Bigger, western style and modern hotels do this "on line"

Just know it from where I stay. Data base will be updated every two hours. The public police office (handling your visa / residence) has access to this data. Without registration no chance to get your status changed / renewed.

If you do not have (need) contact with public police, nobody cares about your registration. Some smaller hotels in bigger cities don't even bother.

If you have a look at the machines at Front Desk of most large sized hotels, you will see they are scanner with fax, the receptionist copies the passport page, then presses send and thats it, its with the police already.
