I had a chance to visit ShenZhen for 4 nights last week with my GF. SZ had always been a day trip place for me to go in the morning and do a few things and be back to HK by night or go there to fly to places in China. For some stupid reason, GF decided we need to take Metro to Dongmem on Sunday. Going there was no problem, I bought the ticket at the booth and the ride was fine and fast. However return trip was something else! There was no ticket booth open there and station was hot and crowded. It took me over 20 tries on 7 different bills to finally get our tickets! The machine only accepts 5 and 10 bills and coins, which I did not have any. People in front of us and people in the back did not have more luck either. It seemed that everyone was struggling with buying tickets.

I always like to get money from HSBC ATMs. I took some money out from the one behind Shangri-La and 2 of the 100 bills were fake! I told my Chinese co-worker and he said: Welcome to ShenZhen! I told him I will go to their office and he said there was no way I could prove that the notes came from HSBC ATM. I am afraid he is right!

I told my GF that I will come to SZ alone next time. I don't thing she thought it was funny! Anyway, thanks all for all the great information here. I subscribe to ISG for its great "articles" Same reason I buy Playboy. Landmark Hotel is a nice place and is on the street behind the Panglin, very well within walking distance of the Seibu area and there are even a few mommies who hangout in front of the Landmark Hotel if you become lazy.

Seibu area is open, but most of the girls sleep in the morning and don't start arriving till the afternoon. I am sure you can find a few decent ones as long is it's not too early.

Most drugstores, or you can try your luck with the counterfeit stuff they sell in many of the shops, fake V, fake C and/or the Chinese brands. I have had good results with a brand called Tiger, looks like V without the headaches, comes in a box of 6 tabs.

Also, someone claimed that HK tailors have their piece work done in Shenzhen. That might be true for the cheapo chains of tailoring shops, but small business tailors still have their work done in HK, sometimes even by the legendary old guys known as 'Shanghai tailors'. PM me if you want some recommendations. No longer exactly cheap (my uncle remembers getting a silk suit in the 1950s for two boxes of Marlboro's hahahahaha) but a lot cheaper than this kind of work outside of Asia. And 'the quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.' That's my motto here, and it goes for P4P, too! The SZ tailors' work is sloppy and unfinished (as other bros have reported) and the only thing I've kept from the days whn I tried them out is my Zhongshan suit...for when I go to Politburo meetings ;-) And I hate how every piece of clothing made in SZ reeks of cigarette smoke...

Totally agreed. some of the new tailor in SZ are the shits. I use an old guy out of taipei. he just like working for old customers and will not accept new customers. Most of the suits you order in Hong Kong are actually made in Shenzhen, but the HK tailors seem to have better fabrics to choose from. I, myself, get my suits made in Thailand which offers an excellent price/value ratio.

However, I would be interested to find a China tailor with access to the HK fabric selection. Any leads?

Haven't gotten suits in China, but have gotten pants. RMB150 (or was it RMB100? ) per piece, compared to a suit in HK for HKD3-4, 000, pants for HKD900 each. Quality of the HK stuff was definitely a notch or two above the China stuff (bought in Shanghai at that big clothing market). The China stuff, some of the hems were not even complete (did not notice until I got home) and the material feels like wool, but I suspect there's a decent percentage of poly in there (gets very slick it when it rains).

That said, I prefer the lower cost over the higher quality. Another positive of the China stuff is that the guy made it exactly how I had requested, loose fitting. The HK guys (the one I went to anyway) are so locked into the "this is the way it is supposed to be made" mindset and wound up with the skinny Euro-trash cut for my pants.
