Jan. 4: Take strict action against individuals and organizations promising good-looking female escorts, Calcutta High Court directed police today.

Justice Joymalya Bagchi described the practice as "civilized prostitution" while ordering the police "to initiate proceedings under the immoral trafficking act against the accused".

The judge was hearing a petition moved by Krishnendu Roy of Murshidabad's Khagra. Roy alleged in his petition that he had lost Rs 8.35 lakh by believing in two youths who promised to send him two female escorts.

Roy's advocate, Anjan Bhattacharya, claimed before the court that even the cops in Khagra and the Murshidabad police superintendent hadn't taken any action against the two.

"My client had contacted Bapi Dey and Amit Roy, who claimed to be residents of Salt Lake, after seeing an advertisement in a daily. They let him speak to some girls on the phone," he said.

"My client was told that he had to deposit a certain sum at a nationalized bank's Salt Lake branch. After he deposited it, he was told that he had to deposit a second installment. He deposited Rs 8.35 lakh between December 16, 2015, and February 2, 2016."

Once he realized he had been cheated, Roy lodged an FIR with Khagra police station against the two. The police started a cheating case. "When they failed to arrest the culprits, my client approached the district police chief. But he, too, didn't take any action. So, he moved court," he said.

The judge asked state counsel Tapas Ballav Mondal why the police hadn't filed a case under the immoral trafficking act. The order for strict action came when Mondal said the police faced problems while tackling such cases.
