ArisCasa and friends, this modus operandi of seeing the rooms 1st and then bargaining at the reception certainly is doable at small properties. The reception staff does have authority from owners to generate business by going below the advertised rates on travel portals or hotel's own websites. Even OYO hotels, you could directly bargain with the staff present at the counter.

Well that's not usually how the hotel room sales online works. Hotel rooms are inventory, perishable stock. Hotels sell this inventory to websites like MMT, cleartrip agoda booking or which ever and these websites analyze search trends on google / tripadvisor and their own websites and dynamically buy rooms in bulk from hotels and sell on their websites. Then there are last minute deal sites like hotwire (not sure if its there in India yet), where you can only specify rating / budget / locality and amenities and this website shows options without displaying names. You get to know which specific hotel only after you book and pay. On these websites sometimes you get fantastic rates, sometimes 50% less, like a clearance sale.

In 99% cases, hotels never sell rooms at a rate lower than the websites. That is also a T&C the websites have with the hotels. Its like Samsung selling their TVs lower than on flipcart or amason. Never happens. Very very rarely you will get rates from hotels less than any of the websites.

100% on the dot; correctly and rightly explained. I know the GMs; reservation heads of at least 4/5 stars in Delhi but always take rooms through these websites. My Principals give a lot of business to these properties on an yearly basis but that's a deal on a corporate basis wherein no. Of rooms are pre-sold and pre- booked across various cities in India. But on an individual basis, these websites are much cheaper and the properties do not go down below the advertised rates on these sites. I have even tried to take at the same price from the hotel reservation desk directly but politely declined. Around 2/3 months ago, they did try to match reluctantly but not any more as business and travel is picking up. Read again guys, Match but not below that also after my requesting them. As direct booking with the property gives a bit of more leverage of early check ins and late check outs. Honestly, I wouldn't even mind a few 200/300 bucks extra if I get a direct booking at the hotel at the websites mentioned below. Alas, not happening as of now.

I can relate to the explanation as have a bit of knowledge and experience of travel and tourism industry. Although, my field of work is different.

Yeah yeah, before anyone points it out to me, I know this industry is bleeding heavily due to this pandemic; fucked entire world and everyone is suffering except a few 4/5 industries.

Mind you my friends, my above is related to 4/5 stars across India in the last few years due to my business travels.

Have tried snm mbagh. It has much better rooms than snm dc.
