Can anyone recommend a cheap call card to call Indonesia from the UK?

Download Skype. Video is free or just calling is usually the best price. I talk to Bali everyday by video and it is usually a good conection, sometimes not so good but on average ok. And it is free. You do need to be conected to the internet so we use Smart in Bali. Reasonable at 100, 000 a month.

Was in Jakarta for two days two weeks ago.

Every time I went to Jakarta I always took a blue bird taxi at the "departure" area just upstairs. I just watch a blue bird in the eyes, throw my little bag in (I travel light) and they put on the meter. Sometimes a security guys seems to take offense and in agreement with the driver I throw 2000 rupiah outside the window. So easy to lose money. And they pick it up and everything goes fine. I notice lately they have more and more police there. Anyone experienced any problems with them?

I guess that's the cheapest way to go taxiwise? Or is it just the same at the arrivals? Bluebirds enough?

As I never tried another way I would like to ask:

- What do you guys do?

- Any fast / easy / very cheap public bus or train transport to thamrin or mangga dua area as I usually stay there?

- What is the usual good negotiating price for private drivers?

There was a flurry of posts on this subject about 5 years ago, but nothing recently.

Esteemed Senior member Bulai69 had written several posts advocating that one should go to the departures level and hop into a cab that had just dropped off someone. However, I'm not surprised to read that there's now more security than before.

Taking a bus can be iffy in Jakarta if you're new to the scene, and risky if you arrive after dark.

I agree with Koperen Karel. The best way to get into town (unless you're really broke) is by Silver Bird. It's only 10-20 thousand more rupiah that Blue Bird, there's usually little or no wait for a taxi, the ride is more comfortable, there's more room in the trunk for luggage, and the drivers speak better English.

Get the Damri Bus one route goes to Mangga Dua Square, I think its the Kemayoran bus. 25, 000 IDR and very comfortable.

I have a late flight a few weeks ago got to Gambri around 8. 30 pm but they told me the last bus is 8pm, I have taking bus from airport as late as 10pm before to Gambri not sure they change the time and the website info is not alway correct so I take a taxi 100k to the airport from Gambri.

Well there's express taxi but the line obviously equally long.

There's some public transport (damri) but I never used them.

The train is not build yet, soon though.

Don't use one of private driver / black market taxi, there's no guarantee of your safety.

If you are with some company and want private driver go the golden bird counter right when you are exiting, they offer private car with driver.

The last couple of times I got fed up with the queue for the Bluebird taxis, so I went for the Silver Birds. Same company, only slightly more expensive and no queing. Besides that, arriving at your hotel in a Mercedes is of course mor stylish.
