The math somehow doesn't work here. If there are 100,000*70%*10% = 7,000 potential exposures (assuming each cust only goes just ONE time which is way understated) each year since 2005. However there have only been an increase of 1,000 cases.

This is what the Indo health authorities are saying about Bali, and remember, HIV infection rates are ALWAYS under-reported.

An Australian nurse friend of mine was part of a World Health Organisation team in Makassar, Sulawesi, researching HIV infection rates among sex workers in this port city in 2005. They found an infection rate of more than 60%. The Indo government suppressed the results.

Anyway, here's the Bali story:

The report quoted local experts who estimate 10% of female sex workers in Bali are HIV positive, up dramatically from an estimated 3% in 2001.

Officials are linking the higher rate of infection among sex workers to Bali's growing population and the burgeoning number of cafes, karaoke, massage parlors and entertainment venues.

The HIV experts also estimated that 100,000 customers are served by female prostitutes in Bali each year with perhaps only 20-30% of those "transactions" employing the use of a condom.

Just returned after about a week in the Kuta area, and the place really hasn't changed much in the year and a half since my last visit. Even prices seem to be pretty much steady.
Met up with ProfDesigner and we actually spent quite a bit of time chatting on a number of occasions. He is an excellent host, despite his busy schedule. Not the least of his preoccupations is caused by the many SMS he receives - I could swear his phone beeps at least every 10 minutes, mostly with messages from women.
My report, unfortunately, is going to be short, largely because I did not go to Sanur, and did not even go to any of the clubs. The reason was that I did not need to.
ProfDesigner introduced me to a friend of his girlfriend, and she was with me the first day.
Then, I ran into a seriously beautiful massage girl as I was walking near Kuta Square. I invited her to do the massage in my room, and she agreed. She was 20 years old, a Balinese from the north coast - and married. Her massage was pretty good, but she didn't want to go any farther, a big disappointment. But eventually she agreed to introduce me to some of her friends. The first was a very pretty girl, 24, who worked in a clothing store near Kuta Square. She stayed with me about an hour before heading back to work, and was happy with the 250,000 rupiah I gave her. The second had little knowledge of English so I couldn't figure out what she did - she was not a massage girl, that I know. She too was very pretty, and seemed to have more time than the first girl. So, for the remaining time I was there I used to call her in and then send her back when I was done - also for 250,000.I suppose I could have kept her around, but I preferred wandering around on my own - besides you never know who you might meet.

The Prof had planned to take me to some of Kuta's clubs, but we never got round to it. So, I am sorry to say that in 4 or 5 visits to Bali I have never made it to any of the clubs. Bounty, Paddy, MBargo - just seen them from outside, never been inside. Just goes to show that it is not necessary to be in those clubs to meet someone. I have always done pretty good with girls from the beach, from Sanur, last time from Kuta Square, and a couple of times with the Prof's help.
Unfortnately, I will not be able to provide numbers or locations. The massage girl's husband was getting angtsy the last couple of days, and I decided to cool it. And the other girl did not give me permission to hand out her number. But with a little resourcefulness anyone should be able to take the route I did.

It looks like there are many younf single girls on vacation in Bali who would love company. Perhaps old timers in Bali could shine some light into where and how to find these girls besides the pros at Mbargo in Kuta etc...

you can try your luck at any of the popular nightclubs on legian like mbargo, bounty, paddies or expresso - bounty will be predominantly 18-21 year olds, mbargo 21-25, expresso 23-28, more or less. i've had the best luck at bounty, it's totally got the drunken-youth-looking-to-get-laid vibe, but the music is terrible! also theres a decent over-30 crowd at obsessions on jl dhyanapura, especially wednesdays and saturdays, and desperate white expat chicks flying in from singapore and hong kong hanging out at the hu'u bar on jl oberoi on the weekends. of course as with anywhere your luck will depend on how good you are with the honeys, but everyone's on vacation and looking to party, so your chances are maybe a bit better than at home.

a few tips: one, there are lots of russian girls on holiday in bali these days, and even though they tend to be middle-to-upper class women (as they can afford to go on vacation overseas) they still seem quite keen to meet americans and europeans. look for the light-blue eyes and the distinctive accent and dive right in if you hear it!

two, japanese girls will be much more receptive to talking to you if you open up with a phrase or two of japanese, even if they speak english. "konbawa, ey-go hanase-maska" means "good evening, can you speak english?"

just walking up and speaking english never seems to work, but if you start off with this phrase, if they can speak english they'll often smile and start a conversation with you. don't know why it works that way, probably it's just a)it's more polite and b) it separates you from all the other foreign guys that approached them that day...

and finally, age doesn't *have* to stop you, but if you're older it helps if you dress well, look a bit rich, and/or excude coolness and sophistication. at least shave and tuck your shirt in ffs! that helps with the *****s as well, actually.

I was staying in Sanur for a week. Ran into quite a few young solo female tourists from Australia, Japan, Europe etc...I am talking only about those under 30; the older ones are plenty and everywhere...

If you can only go out by day, has anyone tried double six beach at sundown? Or even kuta beach? It's probably as much of a sure shot (ahem) as the (maybe) happy ending places, and you could, you know, actually have sex!

Loads of available girls can be seen wandering the beach around sunset, looking for whatever. It's a bit like working the shopping malls in jakarta or even the night clubs.
