I've changed money dozens of times in Bali, and have never gotten ripped off. Just remember the old adage, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. One other trick I often use, is to memorize the last few numbers of the bill, in case they try a switch. I also take a picture of all large US bills I take on a trip, that way I can verify the serial number if needed.

I've had to use this trick more in Argentina, though. The taxi cab drivers there are sharks!

Try finding a freelancer in kuta. Look for someone a little older hanging out at paddies, bounty, mbargo etc, and dressed kind of wild. Not just your standard jeans skirt and ordinary t-shirt, but someone with flashy clothes, maybe a tongue ring. More plainly dressed girls tend to be fresh off the boat, while the flashier ones have been in the game for a while, and probably have had their bumholes broken in a while back oh, and ask first! In a crowded bar with loud music, she won't have to worry about her friends hearing.

For sanur cathouses, try going to one of the x houses where they bring the women to you from various sources. Tell the pimp/driver guys you want anal, then ask the girls again when they get there. I actually find the driver guys can bring decent girls if you are absolutely prepared to turn down the first girl they bring, who almost always will be old and ugly. The second round will often be just what your looking for (though it can't hurt that I speak indonesian I guess)

I wish more is written about this. I was ripped off a couple of years ago in Kuta by these fuckers. Lost almost a $100 from $400 I changed. If you are in Indonesia, don't ever change in any place other than a bank.

A lot HAS been written about this, Crypton. it is also in just about every guide book. Not much we can do about it, except stay informed.

I have brought up this subject numerous times, but I think it goes over people's head. All they want to know is how much does a girl cost at Santa Fe.

There is however a way to get the money back. If you can find a cop, he will happily walk in to the place with you, and shake these guys down.......for a fee of course.

Changing money - My wife simply cannot get it through her head that if the rate is to good to be true then it isn't true! (The golden rule for all investment schemes). She would insist that she was on top of their game, but each of the 3 times she tried she was done like a dinner!! Don't bother trying to change if the rate is too high, or they start trying to give you a heap of 20k notes. pickup your A$, Euro or US$ and walk away. TIP: check your original stake before you walk away, these guys are so good you will find yourself taking away less than you gave them even if you changed nothing!

After living in Bali from 2004-2007, I left for Vietnam, however I'm now back living on the island officially as of mid December so I thought I'd share a few insights from my re-entry.

I've never been a particularly big patron of nightclubs and the late-night bar scene, though in my early 40's I have little tolerance for the loud music and exorbitant prices, so my experiences gravitate heavily towards massage parlors, spa's, and the casual pick-up.

My biggest adjustment since returning is dealing with the closure of Kuta Sauna (now Jegeg Bali) which was a fantasia for me during its existence. The girls were attractive, indulgent, free spirited, and feisty. There are few places that offered so much for so little so consistently. Jegeg is a pale imitation of its predecessor with a severely depleted staff consisting primarily of second tier talent.

For those of you who enjoy Balinese Massage I recommend No. 24, her name is Veronica, though she prefers Icha. From Surabaya she has an amazing rack on her lithe frame, her face appears Japanese which lends an oriental exoticness to her feline features. I've taken her to several places around Bali and when sufficiently primed she'll leave you bedraggled.

I've been spending some time at Grahadi. The first experiences were with the massage services where after a half dozen attempts I finally settled on No. 7 Lila. Someone has already referred to her, though they noted No. 4, as plump but not fat, which I think is an apt description. She has a huge rack and the trunk come fully loaded. The VIP rooms (80K) are great especially vis-a-vis the claustrophobic curtained cells one occupies in most massage places. Upon entry she locks the door and disrobes and the hour (150-250K) passes very quickly. Though she is not a GFE experience she is very close; she has come to my villa once so far (9pm-7am/600k) with 3 pops, DATY, DFK, and a great massage. She is eager to return but I prefer to keep it a Grahadi for the time being.

Upon leaving Grahadi after one of these mid-afternoon sessions I observed the Karaoke girls making their way from the restaurant area to the side door entrance for the Karaoke building. One girl is particular was absolutely stunning, Tina Turner like legs and Tyra Banks like body, though I did not get a good look at her face.

A few nights later I visited Grahadi Karaoke and made my way down the long dimly corridor to the small viewing room in the rear of the building. I must say the mama-san, her body especially, is very attractive to me and I've tried to negotiate for her but so far no luck. [Note: while I'm not fluent by any means in Indo I can converse and able to effectively communicate]

I tried to book No. 49 and was quoted 900, 000K for ST (3 hours) or 1. 2 million for LT (all night/take out). I agreed to LT but only then was told she was already booked. Scanning the other 30 candidates I didn't see any that really excited me. Beware, close scrutiny of many of these girls will reveal that many are sporting some plump midriffs which are disguised by the way they position themselves when seated. And given that most everything else is padded the "real deal" is many times not what you think you ordered.

So I booked No. 49 before leaving for the next night which put a "hold" on her till 9pm the following night. However when I showed up I found that she hadn't reported for work that night so my booking carried forward and if I decide to go tonight I'll follow up with a report.

Further up the road, on the same side, directly across from a large roof mounted red/white lettered sign reading "Surf Wear Factory Sale" is Kuta Timur Resort.

As many have noted already the great deal here is the private "villa" accommodation they provide for 150, 000k (3 hours), if you choose a girl for massage its min 2 hr booking (100, 000). You don't have to use their girls, and you can phone ahead to book a villa, they will tell you the number of the villa, and you can literally drive into the carport and shut the door behind for total discretion. They are spartan though comfortable, the only real nuisance is the very loud Karaoke music coming from the adjacent building.

I had April two consecutive nights, and as Dom Peringnon, has already written that girl is sick! She will ravish you in every conceivable way for 3 hours running if you're up for it. Aside from some dermatitis on her legs which she is very conscious of. Her body is a 6. But her attitude and enthusiasm and sincerity combine to make for a 10+ experience; she is sexual sybarite! For my initial 2 hr full-on nearly everything goes ordeal I gave her 400k. For the 3 hour sensory sex fest I paid 500k. This girl will do anything to please, and again as DP alluded to, I mean anything. The next time with me she will bring along a posse of her pre-selected friends to enhance our experience.

Last night I ventured out to Blue Eyes, which is on the by-pass en route to Sanur on the left hand side. It's attached to a relatively nice hotel, Genesis, marketed towards the domestic tourist. While the nightclub opens at 10pm you can access the fishbowl hours beforehand by taking an immediate hard right turn upon entering the hotel lobby. There are two nondescript doors behind the lobby coffee bar and pool tables off to your right. Upon entry you will be greeted by a welcome desk but take the stairs to your left down one level and at the end of the corridor on the left side is their fishbowl.

When I first entered a very attractive welcome host showed me the rooms, I believe they go for 168, 000/hr with the rooms on the right side a tad more expensive as they have a door which opens to a tiny patio overlooking the nightclub below.

When it became apparent my primary interest was not karaoke I was offered "sexy dancers" for my room at which time my host showed me to a room where a dozen girls in various stages of dress were lounging about. Suffice it to say but I found none of them very attractive, and nowhere near sexy. At this time I was led to the fishbowl as already described.

Unlike the fishbowl and Grahadia, and the massage fishbowls, these girls are dressed like debutantes with full hair and make up treatment very much like Bangkok.

I initially chose No. 006, then selected another two from an adjoining room where they were finishing up their dressing. I told my host at this time that I had no desire for the karaoke rooms but wanted to take them out.

The prices are very steep; 1. 2 million for ST, and 1. 5 million for LT (which ends at 6 am! ). Most take them to the adjacent Genesis hotel (rates can be found on-line though I'm told they have special hourly prices) but I wanted to go back to my villa. I was told that only a select few are available for take-out. The rest you have to eat-in! Fortunately, the hottest. Body 9, face 8. 5. Of the three was 'available' so I bit the bullet and paid her freight.

During our small talk she asked how long I had booked her, I told her till approx 7 or 8 am. She immediately objected telling me she was only available short term, then only till 6 am; She wouldn't budge. So I went back to the desk and informed them of the girl's position. A brief huddle ensued with her getting an earful from her bosses, after which it was announced there had been a "little misunderstanding". Needless to say this girl's attitude was set and regardless of her coaching her enthusiasm would never catch up so I demanded a refund which was given very reluctantly, I left empty handed and to be honest at those prices doubt I will ever return.

In next update I revisit a few of my favorite off-the-beaten path massage places which, if your lucky, can be serendipitous experiences. Like American Idol you can occasionally identify a star in the making and co-opt them for future service at very favorable terms.

As of recently, you cannot buy a lion air ticket online with a NON Indonesia credit card. Buy it with cash at an Indonesia airport, or you can use any credit card at a travel agency inside Indonesia.
