Haven't heard from you in years. Glad to see your still reading the blogs. Made's was remodeled about 7 years ago and expanded. Problem is they didn't change the food. I guess you can't expect a Balinese cook to flavor and prepare the food right.

In Hawaii the locals like salt, so everything is too salty. Hawaii is the SPAM eating capitol of the world. More spam is eaten here than anywhere. SPAM is all the parts from pigs and beef that can't be eaten alone.

Also the worst Bali belly I ever had was from the local Watermelon.

IMHO, my 2 cents. Since it is hot, stick with water. It is more than enough, even for marathon runners. Juices or fruit shakes or the likes will cause things to move faster and could also get contaminated (from surfaces, spray, hygiene).

On reflection I always drink a lot fruit juice when I'm in Bali so I'm thinking that could be the culprit.

Thoroughly cooked and serviced piping hot is best. Most things chilled or cool will increase the risks even in the US. In the US think, salad (buffet), blueberry, strawberry, chicken salad, peanut butter.

I have eaten at most the warung your have mentioned and no problems. I don't think I have ever had food poisoning just the squirts.

I agree once you find the right Resto's that are clean and have a lot of turn over in customers you can usually stay healthy. I always eat at Batujimbar Caf in Sanur, Bali Bakery in Kuta and Caf in Ubud. Sushitai and another Chinese on Sunset Road. These are all on the high priced side but I never get sick from the food. All ways drink bottled water but still get the Hershey squirts.

Rob, you must be eating in the wrong restaurants. I spent 2 weeks in Kuta in January and got nothing. Plus one month in October, and still no diarrhea. This is because I have identified 4 safe restaurants near where I stay. And I keep going back to these restaurants rather than risk trying other unknown restaurants. In these places I have had no problems with juices, ice, salads, meats. Though, I never order crab, prawns, or lobster which although probably safe, makes me wary.

These restaurants are: Bamboo Corner, Gong Corner, Pama, and Indonesia Warung. Great food too, especially at Bamboo.

I always use tap water to brush my teeth. Again no issues.

My most recent instance of food poisoning was picked up in Pattaya, from chicken rice at the BigC food court in Central Rd. Knocked me out for 3 days. And a long time ago in Bali I remember some nasty food poisoning, I think when I ate at Bagus Pub in Poppies 2.

Knock on wood, no problems over the years. I just practice the normal precautions and make sure everything is cooked through. Unlike some, that means no salad, ice, and precut fruit.

Some stomachs are are really vulnerable like me can not adjust with some kind of food such as coconut oil. That's why I am totally avoiding visiting like the places like Indonesia or Srlinaka; because it is almost impossible to find food cooked by vegetable oil. Used only coconut oil for cooking and some stomachs very sensitive with that.

I have a cast iron stomach! Whether it is air borne viruses, unsanitary conditions or off food I don't know, it doesn't matter what precautions I take I get a bug.
