Good one Mark III, can you elaborate on how you extended it for 4 years, without it being obvious?

A couple of years ago, my license expired beofre I had a chance to renew it, so I just threw it in the swimming pool for 10 minutes, it came out soggy, the date was a smear, but my smilling face was still there. it looked like a legitimate mistake to me, and luckily the cop who stopped me a week later just smiled when I told him I was so stupid to go swimming with my license in my pocket. He was more interested in hearing the triple horns I had just installed on my bike, which still, BTW, have zero effect on people ahead of me, when I blast it. It's like they are deaf, if someone came up behind me and blasted those things, I would jump out of my skin

But talking about a International Driver's license (IDL) it is valid for 1 year. I took a date stamp from my office and I extended it myself for 4 years. No questions asked when I was stopped, the police man could not even read the license I guess (it is not valid for a motor ;-) he thanked me for showing it and I was on my way again. And I paid Rp 20.000 for the motorbike last year.

Scooters - recently rented a scooter from along the street in Seminyak, 30k a day for 3 days. Used it extensively, riding from there to Kuta and Sanur. I was pulled over at one intersection and had to go through the charade of being told i would need to go to court.... however i could pay 100k and be on my way. I knew that 50 to 75 was the going rate for non Indonesians, explained that i only had 75k on me, which was accepted.
Smiles in both directions throughout the transaction. No problems!

Changing money - My wife simply cannot get it through her head that if the rate is to good to be true then it isn't true! (The golden rule for all investment schemes). She would insist that she was on top of their game, but each of the 3 times she tried she was done like a dinner!! Don't bother trying to change if the rate is too high, or they start trying to give you a heap of 20k notes. pickup your A$, Euro or US$ and walk away. TIP: check your original stake before you walk away, these guys are so good you will find yourself taking away less than you gave them even if you changed nothing!

One more thing. Always use your own calculator when changing money especially to the places offering better rate. They use fixed calculators and you end up with much less money than you should. Happened to a friend of mine.

This is somEthing that makes me crazy, the thieves at some fly by night foreign exchange.
Typically, it will be a very small shop, with a desk which is as high as your chest, and 2 guys will start chatting away, to distract you, so they can rip you off. If a place is offering a much better rate than others, DO NO TRY TO BEAT THEM AT THEIR GAME, these guys are pros. Do not let anyone touch your money once they have counted it in front of you.

best rule of thumb is, if it looks legit, and if they write out a receipt for the transaction, then it is safe. IF NOT, DO NOT DO BUSINESS THERE, YOU WILL LOSE.

International licenses are required, HOWEVER, since Indonesia is the second most corrupt country in the world, (they keep trying to be number 1), paying off the local polisi with a blue bill actually, which is 50,000 rps, or about 4.50 USD, is the way to go. Do not rent from the hotel, just walk arounbd, you will se dozens of bikes parked on the street with a sign on them, for rent. You will probably be asked for 50,000 per day, but the going rate is 30,000. Since it is very quiet right now, you will be fine paying 30,000 especically for multiple days.

One last word on the int'l license. a friend got a fake one, and paid a bigger fine than if he just told the polisi he sisnt have one. They don't like to be made fun of. I have one, a real one, motorcycle endorsed, and when they see it, they don't bother me at all.

someone asked about beaches and clarity of water. The South of Bali isn't known for calm clear water, you need to go up north for that, but I just got back from Lovina today, and it is nasty. Rainy season, big waves, lots of wind. Best time for that is May through october.

Although I said the International Driver's License (IDL) is worthless for a moto rider if it is not motorcycle endorsed, I want to emphasize that it is golden if it is motorcycle endorsed. Also, it is golden for driving a car.The good thing about an IDL is: it is valid for one year and transcends international boundaries, so if you travel much, and like to drive yourself, it is much better to have an IDL than re-license every new country you visit.

Mongers on their way to Bali via Bangkok can pick up a perfectly adequate (though false) International Drivers License good for cars and bikes in Khao San Road. Most have 10 years validity.

It's better to have one if you're intending to drive in Bali.

Yes you can get an official one at one of two big police stations in Denpasar, but getting it can be a half day ordeal including travel time.

You can get the letter referred to by Randsurfer at (some) police stations, but only if the cops have enough English to know what you're asking for, or if your Indonesian is up to it.

There are very frequent "sweeping" road blocks where all drivers are stopped and their licenses and registration papers checked. Westerners are manna from heaven for the cops since most are unlicensed. Depending on the cop's greed, you might get stung anything up to 100,000 rupiah, about $US10.

Westerners in cars and on bikes are also pulled over at random, especially if they look like they are new arrivals, in the hope that "on-the-spot fines" can be levied.

Some cops will scribble you a note which ostensibly you can show to other cops that pull you over so you are exempt from being stung, but these are often ignored.

And I know any number of people who have been hit several times over a two week holiday.

So if you're coming through Bangkok, take half an hour out of your day and get a plastic international drivers permit in Khao San Road.

Licenses:

1. You can bring a suitable license with you from your home country, which means, an "international drivers License" (IDL). In USA the rights to issue those belong to AAA auto service. I'm sure you can do a Google to find the authority in your country. If you want to drive a motorbike in Bali, the International License is worthless without having the motorcycle endorsement stamped. That will only happen if you are licensed for a motorcycle on your home driver's license. If you are stopped and have the IDL but not motorcycle endorsed, that is the same as having no license.

2. You can get a license in Bali. I go to a Police Station on the way to the Uluwatu surfing beaches, but I'm sure it can be done elsewhere. I go in and tell the policeman on duty I want to drive a motorbike for xx days and I'd like to get a license, "is this possible"? He will say yes, and get out a somewhat official form, and fill it out by hand. This form is your license. You will need your home driver's license he can copy some info from and it wouldn't hurt to have your passport too, that he can refer too, but he won't keep either of these items. After this, carry only the local license form. Do not carry or show your home license.

YOUR HOME LICENSE DOES NOT NEED TO BE MOTORCYCLE ENDORSED to get this local motorbike license. You should pay him 150K rupiah, which is comparable to the cost of the international license anyway.

As I suspected and suggested, the International Drivers License was always a worthless piece of paper when trying to rent motos almost everywhere I tried to use it in the past (going back more than 10 years and in many countries) which is why I no longer bother with it.

Back in Kuta for one night before going to Bangkok and it’s significantly quieter than it was in the first days of the month. It seems like they have had some really bad weather recently since the beach was covered with waste from the sea, even some large tree trunks have crashed ashore.

driving in bali can be dangerous as there is an "anything" goes mentality of the drivers.

1. safest scenario is when you a going along with the traffic, even though everyone is passing on all sides, people are going in the same direction and accidents rarely happen at this time.

important: make no sudden moves, turns, drastic lane changes, etc. always precede every significant event with a turn signal.

2. the real danger is vehicles pulling out in front of you, turning in front of you, driving straight at you in "your lane" (tour buses, trucks). do not drive a motorbike and sightsee at the same. you must focus on the road and traffic. you must do two things at once:

a. negotiate the immediate traffic scenario near you.

b. anticipate 50-100 meters down the road. for example, if you see a tour bus in the distance and he is behind a slow car, you can be fairly sure he is going to pass the car using your lane whether you are there or not. you can then begin to flash your lights warning him off, and/or begin slowing down so he can complete the pass prior to running you off the road.

c. it is possible to drive at a relatively moderate safe speed staying to the "leftish" side of the road (not too close, hazards can surprise you from there), and just cruise along incident free. it's not a bad idea to find a large car that is traveling at a decent pace, and just drive behind it at a close but safe distace. the car then acts as a major deterrent to other vehicles encroaching in your area. but still, make sure you are visible, and be ready for anything.

d. use your horn often to warn people where you are. anticipate, and beep early. especially if it looks like someone is going to pull out in front of you.

Motorbike rentals are everywhere in the tourist areas.

1. When you receive the bike, it will almost always be nearly empty of gas, so your first step is to find out where the nearest gas is sold, and go there. 3-4 liters to fill the tank. Gas is around 5000 rupiah/liter.

2. Contrary to what someone else said, a day of rental is 24 hours. Further, If you rent 7 days, starting at noon on Jan. 1, it is due back by noon Jan. 8.

3. Automatic transmission bikes are widely avaiable now and are highly recommended. Easier to drive. Tend to have a larger storage bin under the seat. the Yamaha Nouvo has very large bin, enough to store your helmet.

4. Price for a automatic should be 30K/day, manual 25K/day. For long rentals, say 10 days or more, you should be able to get 5000 rupiah less per day.

5. Test the bike! Check headlights, high beams, brake lights, taillights, turn signals front and back, brakes work, start easy, idles properly, frame isn't bent, etc. etc. drive it down the street and back to make sure it is aligned properly. Observe your gas situation (See #1 above)

6. Get your dealer's hand phone number in case the bike fails. If it fails through no fault of yours, he should come out to you and fix it or replace it.

7. Minor damage you cause, just fix it yourself at a local mechanic. they are very very cheap and better than returning it dinged to the dealer.

8. Flat tire: a new tube including installation is only 50K.

9.. Buy gas at a petrol station, do not buy from roadside vendors. They cut the gas with Kerosene and also it can be dirty. This can result in clogging your fuel supply or messing up your carb.

10. No need for insurance. Better to fix any damage yourself, and besides, if you pay insurance and then damage it, very likely the dealer will confront you with some kind of "deductible" amount or say xyz damage isn 't covered, etc. In other words your aren't buying anything.
