the young ones are too shy and most speak no english, they prefer the locals / Singaporeans. I speak passable Bahasa, if you do not speak any Bahasa, then I do agree, Batam is not the place for you, you will do much better in Thailand & Philippines.

After you read your 50 pages of reports, you should learn that:
1) Batam is not Bangkok or like one of those popular destinations for hobbyists. Stay away if you are looking for that.
2) Local girls DO LOVE bule, but you need to have lots of respect and "savoir faire".

Since I was planning a trip from Singapore up north through Malaysia and further to BBK a 2 day trip to Batam would be worth it or should I rather.

Wait until my next trip to go to Indonesia for the first time but for longer?

Dear all, but especially my friends old regulars (you know who I am talking to) and those how had DIRECT EXPERIENCE,

I may be back to Batam on the last week of July. OMG! I just checked and Ramadan in 2012 is July 21- August 19!

In 2011, there were a lot of posts dealing with "how is Batam on Ramadan"?
Me too I wrote something: "In Ramadan, massage joints will be closed daytime, but will open later (6pm-9pm for example)". But I was in Batam a few days before Ramadan began.
I need a good advice from expert people, not just a generic "don't come during Ramadan, better later". I don't care much about massage joints, but it's good to know they are open, even if at special times.

1) Are massage joints really closed daytime and open later after 6pm?

2) What about NoName? Usual business and crowd I hope?

3) What about discoes? Pacific and Newton? Usual business and crowd I hope?

4) What about eating in Nagoya Hill? Will restaurants be really closed daytime?

5) What about Windsor and Harbour Bay at night? Open and business as usual I hope?

Excellent post. Many statements are right to the point. I like your approach (and I like even more your photos: you are damn lucky, or good at this. I wish I could meet them ).

May I ask you (maybe by PM is better?) where do you come from? I understand you are not bule like me.

If you explore Batam a little more, you will find action for all budgets, it's just that it is not immediately visible. Places like I-hotel bar 1st floor, you can get a stunner for 1. 5 mil, s-hotel or planet, you can get a Chinese import for 2. 5 mil, if you visit the houses (because as they call it) , you can get girls as little as 300k-400k all night delivered to your hotel room. I have visited the famous NoName only twice, both times found girls under 25 willing to come to my hotel for free, didn't fancy them so didn't pursue (I am very particular about quality, prefer no sex than sex with a girl I don't fancy) , however I passed Noname on my last night there (Saturday) and saw few bules pull out some real stunners, will have to check it out next time, as maybe the scene is better on Saturdays (I went on weeknights).

Hotels are fairly cheap (will give detailed reports of hotels later, I've stayed in most hotels in Batam) and the place is in general very safe, no trouble unless you look for some.

Warning: lady houses are not for the average ISG poster. Rooms are dodgy, girls are very "experienced", so to speak, few are attractive. Any girl in a disco is more attractive than those. For 300k-400k, then I'd prefer to book a low-price lady from massage joints.

If your last night in NoName was Saturday 5 May, one of those bule was me.

I met a group of 3 very nice girls. 100% regular and NOT on the P4P scene. Girls who like to go dance sometimes (NoName is expensive for a local. It cannot be afforded often). A very nice night with one of them and a nice Sunday with all (Sunday not in my bed, unfortunately).

BTW I'm not a great fan of Pattaya or AC either and I generally stray away from places where the P4P trade is in-ya-face. Obviously Batam has it's fine jewels but for an impatient non-Bahasa speaker such as myself I found it a very hard nut to crack compared to other 'non-in-ya-face' places I've been lucky enough to visit all over Asia. I do find the implication that if Batam doesn't rock your world you're obviously some sort of degenerate lowlife who belongs in Pattaya slightly tedious. Anyway, for all you guys who find Batam the bees knees, enjoy!

You make Batam sound like a destination for the mongering 'connoisseur' which it is not IMHO. The whole experience is very second rate, there's just no life or buzz to the place. When I visited, largely on the recommendation of this board, I remember wondering which Batam bar owner had posted the glowing reports. I can honestly say I've had more fun in some of Asia's dodgiest tin-shack brothels than I had in Batam. You do not have to be a devotee of Pattaya or AC to realize Batam is a bit sub-par. Just my opinion.

Made two visits to Batam this year, each for more than a week. I have mongered in most places in Thailand and Indonesia, for a newbie, Batam can seem quiet & boring when compared to Pattaya (or AC). The first few times I felt the same. Initially, I was mainly visiting the various massage places where one books the girl from morning to morning (unlike places like Pattaya where it could be really late when you book a girl and she stays usually till noon). So it actually works out cheaper, there are no drinks to buy and you can bonk unlimited of times from 11 am to 8 am next morning. Special places to mention are 82 & Indah 2 where some real cuties can be found if you go early (prices for the good ones 1. 0-1. 5 million). Occasionally, I was looking for freelancers in the clubs, which I do admit is hit or miss, the more seasoned girls approach the foreigners, the young ones are too shy and most speak no english, they prefer the locals / Singaporeans. I speak passable Bahasa, if you do not speak any Bahasa, then I do agree, Batam is not the place for you, you will do much better in Thailand & Philippines.

However, recently I have found a much better way, however it requires initial investment. Book a karaoke room at Newton (or Planet) karaoke at around 10pm, this will cost 50-60 USD on weekdays and 70-80 USD on weekends (inclusive of few drinks). Pay the main security guard USD 10, he knows who the discotheque freelancers are and will send them to your karaoke room. You can then chat with them, get their tel. No. 's incase they you feel you will need them later, in my first night, I got 8-10 numbers. 3 of which were quite hot, but I kept looking for a better one. Security even sent three dancers (who dance on the discotheque stage) to the room, they were all available. It will be better to have a known local with you in the room who will help you communicate with these girls for a few drinks and change. Once you have the numbers, your trip is set, you can just call and ask them to come to your room on any given day (if they are off). Please note most of these girls are salesgirls, students, factory workers, stylists who visit the clubs to have a good time and make extra money.

I found a girl there who just turned 18 and took her to Yogjakarta where I gave her my old phone and she deleted all my Batam contacts before I could copy them to my new phone, however got the number of many of her 18 year old friends who I will be calling when I visit next after Ramadan. Now this is where Batam is different from Pattaya, in so many visits to Pattaya, (you can see my Pattaya reports of last year) I could not find that fresh 18-19 year old student / salesgirl with almost no mileage (most have only fucked their boyfriend in school / college). Yes, they cannot take too much pounding, most can take only one, maybe two shots a night, but it's the quality that counts, the feeling of entering a tight, fresh teen pussy and sleeping in her arms is definitely worth a little more cash and effort IMHO. However, if one does not want to take risks, make the effort and be willing to spend a little more if required to do so, then he is better off in AC or Pattaya where things are more in your face and easily available.

If that's The Standard, then yes Batam would be considered sub-par. In Batam:

- you will NOT find brothels (only few ones, very cheap and seedy, for locals) ;

- bars are for caucasians expats; girls are nice and offer nice company and conversation skills, you can ALSO take them home, but they are expensive; you can play pool and drink beers; bars are not my place in Batam, BTW!

- there are no go-go bars, with dancers etc;

- there are almost no fishbowls.

- only few KTVs and massage joints where you can book girls.

Then, why to go to Batam? Read my many past reports and what I did here. The answer is there.
