Will be going to Batam via Bintan. I've never been to Batam and was wondering if anyone can provide some guidance on how to get around. Mainly, which ferry port I'll be arriving at Batam(via Tanjung Pinang) and hotels to stay near the port and places to pick up girls, also nearby. I stayed there in 2006. The three guys and the staff who ran the place were friendly and helpful. It's very laid back and run more like a guest house or small club. It hasn't the formality of a three star hotel. The only drawback is that one has to take a four minute taxi ride to Nagoya Center if one wishes to drink or dine out -not a big deal. I believe that the restaurant is open to guests and non-guests alike. Possibly the pool as well, but better check.

coming to bintan from singapore you will have to use a different ferry terminal from the batam one. the singapore "tanah merah mrt" station has frequent bus connections to the tanah merah ferry terminal. you will catch the #35 bus. route details and other info is on the attached map under the singapore article. you can also take your big bags on this bus. the tanah merah terminal is very clean, efficient and organized in usual singapore style. it is rather like an airport. you can carry your own bag on board the ferry if you wish. the trip is just over an hour and the boat is airconditioned.

several companies run ferries to and from singapore, about 6 departures a day. departures are not as frequent as to batam, only about 6 times a day. more details here:

take note that the weekend timetable is quite different from the weekday one. weekend travel should be altogether avoided if possible, because of the crowds arriving from singapore and malaysia. friday nights to bintan and sunday afternoons from bintan are usually completely booked out.

transport from bintan to batam island: from tanjung pinang there also frequent ferries, approx. every 30 minutes. on batam you arrive at telaga punggur where lots of taxis will mob you. keep your cool, although there is a fare-table the prices are negotiable. they will take you to nagoya for 50krp. the batam airport is very near telaga punggur, in case you are catching a flight.

there are also a couple of daily ferry departures to tanjung balai on karimun island and to dumai town in sumatra.

local transport:

outside tanjung pinang town there is no public transport and you will have to charter a private vehicle wherever you go. this includes the beaches and the chicken village. the good news is that chartering is cheaper than on batam. the bad news is that most vehicles are in pretty crappy condition. for an all day trip think of 200krp+ (in year 2007). a return trip to the chicken village (approx. 30km) shouldn't cost more than 80krp. from singapore you arrive at the tanjung pinang international seaport, which is right in the town centre. farangs can get a visa on arrival here for the usual $10. $25, 7. 30days. don't join the main queue at passport control as you arrive but go to the "visa" window (singaporeans don't need a visa). being the only farang, you will most likely go thru quicker than the others. if you don't have usd, you can also change rupiah and sgd here at pitiful rates.

exiting the ferry terminal a mob of taxi drivers and motos will hassle you but it is not as bad as batam. (and of course it's nothing when compared to psar tmei, phnom penh). don't believe what they say, you don't need transport to get to town. because you are already in town. just locate the gate and walk out calmly. there will be many hotels on your left and right. some are marked on the map below. as always, i suggest that you check in to these for the first night and then you can go searching for something better.

there are many hotels right in town, however standards are not as high as on batam. count on 50k for fan and 150krp for a reasonable aircon room. most hotels will not have a safetybox in this price-range. apart from saturday night there will be plenty of accomodation available in all price ranges.

you are in the center of town and a variety of foodshops are at your door. all indonesian fare though. at night there are many food sellers at the harbour. both smokes and beer are cheaper than in singapore.

the locals will give you a lot of attention but they are generally friendly. it is a much nicer and more relaxed place than batam. you can feel that there is a "community" here which is lacking on batam. security is not a great issue. it is a friendly place in general.

the social affairs office within batam municipal administration has decided to merge six brothel complexes rep001tered around batam into a single complex in the batam district, nongsa, in order to "contain" prostitution there.
head of the office azwan said on tuesday that the municipal government and batam authority had provided a 7.4-hectare site in teluk pandan, nongsa district, to allow businesspeople to relocate their entertainment business to the area.

the six complexes in question are those in samyong and tangki seribu, batu ampar district; teluk bakau, nongsa district; tanjung ucang, sekupang district; tanjung piayu, sei beduk district and mat belanda island, belakang padang district.

businesspeople from these complexes have already relocated 18 bars and karaoke clubs to a 3.2-hectare site in teluk pandan, which has accommodated 139 sex workers; the remaining 4.2 hectares will be used for the relocation and construction of amusement places.

"the new policy is aimed at isolating the brothel complex from local residential areas and from children. it is also aimed at limiting the presence of sex workers in the city. they are likely to be people living with hiv/aids," said azwan.

teluk pandan is set to accommodate 96 bars and karaoke spots; thus far, a total 866 sex workers are now registered with the social affairs office.
