I've actually never seen an immigration cop in the streets. In my experience, it's always normal cops checking passports and asking for bribes in the streets. I haven't had an immigration cop ask me for money in over 10 years. It used to be a big problem at the airport, but not anymore.

Immigration at the airport has even become client-friendly. Last time I was in Indonesia I made a mistake when entering the country at Sukarno-Hatta. This was duly noticed when I checked in for departure and I was told to report to immigration. The officer on duty checked my passport, ticket and visa receipt and concluded that I had made an honest mistake. He then proceeded to put a blue (important color) stamp with the departure date in my passport and told me to proceed "langsung" to the gate. No problem, no bribe necessary. Maybe it was helpful too that I spoke Bahasa Indonesia with them.

Jakarta is a big city. Even for relatively "short" distances you will need transport by taxi.

Closest you'll find to some region of town that is 'walkable'.

When I had a rummage around the internet I found a list of the top ten striptease and sexy dancer shows (Tease club, Malioboro, King cross, Classic hotel, Club 36, the's place in block M). They all looked like go go style bars, with topless or nude style dancing. Have I misunderstood what is on offer?.

I'm just looking for something in walking distance from a reasonable hotel.

Malioboro Spa is about 400 meters from the Hotel Grand Mercure Harmoni. Only if one were grossly out of shape would it be difficult to walk from one to the other.

My recent trip to Jakarta wasn't a very good experience, due to immigration. Just a warning to those who don't know this, carry your passport with you when you are outside your hotel. I got detained outside the Novotel by immigration who were not too pleasant. They insisted on seeing my passport which I didn't have on me and then they wouldn't let me get it from the room. So I was detained in the office fro 24 hours, until I got the hotel manager to bring my passport to me in the office. It really was a nightmare /.

Did you not offer them money? They are normally only looking for 100K rupiah, never more than 300k. 24 hours isn't worth saving that little bit of money.

There was a police blockade just over the bridge on rasuna said the other night where the Izzi pizza used to be. (near taman lawang) They don't seem to worry too much about those lady boys in that area prostituting themselves, but they do like to generate some cash checking for passports. I, of course, did not have my passport with me (there is no way I will carry my passport around town considering how drunk I get most times - i would lose it for sure). I paid the 100k (less than 8 bucks USD) and continued on my way in less than 5 minutes. It's so rare that I run into those police blockades, I don't even worry about them.

You won't overpay. The prices at those places are fixed and they don't charge anyone any differently from anyone else.

I'm on holiday shortly passing through Bali before my flight home from Jakarta.

I've been to lots of mongering destinations before, but never Jakarta. Ideally I would like to stay in an area that has a choice of go go style bars within walking distance from the hotel, so that I can take a girl back for fun and games. Whereas other places like BKK and AC have streets full of such bars, in Jakarta they appear to be spread out across the city. Block M looks a bit isolated in the south, with the majority of topless / nude bars being in isolated locations across the north and west of the city.

I would like to avoid the need for taxi's to get to my destination and was hoping that somebody could suggest a hotel / area of town that would fit my plans.

F you are looking for "go go style bars", Jakarta will disappoint you -- the working girls there don't generally dance as part of their job description. Same with avoiding taxis to go back to your hotel.

I would imagine cops would want to see one's visa stamp and are not just looking for official ID in their shakedown attempts.

This is a quote from the US Passport Web site:

So I wonder what real value it would have in a place like Jakarta over a copy of my passport book and my Drivers License. I suppose some, but would it matter to a cop out to shake me down or one with an anti American grudge? And since I have never been hassled for not having a passport in my possession except in Colombia in the bad old days, I am not too worried about it now.

For those of you who are time starved on a Sunday, Metro massage in Kelapa Gading is right next door to a denominational church, so as you are going about your business in the room upstairs with the girl. The happy clappers are praying for your soul, literally a meter away on the other side of a rather thin wall. Highly recomennded for those who want to sin and be forgiven all at the same time.
