Sofyan hotels are the sharia ones that come to my mind. Looking for the nearest hotel with a date, I arrived at the Sofyan in jalan Cut Mutia. We could not check in because they insisted on a document that shows that my date and I live at the same address. So your idea may not work.

The Sofyan Hotel Minangkabau owners also run the Menteng Group Hotels ironically. So I'd avoid them as well. These are mainly crappy 2/3 star hotels with in-house massage girls. The only hotel in this group you could make the mistake of booking is probably the Royal Kuningan (which doesn't even have a bar) though it claims to be 4 star.

Are the hotels in Jakarta all green? Especially that I'm looking to book in a 5 star hotel (Ritz or Shangrila,. Etc), are they going to make a fuss if am picking a girl or two to my room every now and then? Should I bribe someone in advance?

Actually, two of the better-known monger locales are bars/clubs in 5-star hotels, i.e., BATS and CJs, if this provides any perspective. For example, BATS is located in the Shangila. And only the "sharia hotels" (as they were referred to by another poster in this thread), would place any restrictions on this (although I can't speak to whether some of the hotels would object to bringing two girls at the same time to one's room). And the odds of inadvertently booking into a "sharia hotel" by random chance is very low, and probably non-existent if one is looking at well-known 5-star hotels.

And no bribe needed anywhere as far as I know.

A good time to go? I'm solidifying the dates tomorrow morning for a hop around SEA from roughly 20 July-5 August, and I'm wondering if it's worth fitting into my plans. I'm doing HCMC-PP / SR-AC, and given the relatively dirt-cheap nature of the detour, I was wondering if the time of year would make it a wash. I've got to sympathise with one of the previous posters as first time impressions of Blok M are often disappointing. My first trip to Blok M certainly wasn't much fun.

A Frieslander uncle staying with our family offered to treat me to some English language books. About 3 hours of waiting and waiting in Faletehan (and half way through Treasure Island) my Uncle appeared with a sweat and smile on his face. I refused to visit Blok M with him ever again on his weekly sojourns.

But somehow about two years later I ended up there again. I met a blok M regular. A part german lady called Ulla who lived in the new Ragunan Zoo and had brought along a baby monkey in a nappy for a drink, I discovered Blok M could be fun. In those days the most famous character in Blok M was called Clemens. He was a very good natured Hornbill bird that wandered from shop to bar to shop. He scared the shit our of any newcomers especially the hardy oilmen.

Although only chest height to the pool tables, it became my new hobby. A wasted youth. The Brits did explain they wanted to teach me how to play pool "properly" after each foul by shouting and pointing rudely to play the bloody ball behind the line of the Dee...
