I was in JKT from 31st Aug to 3rd September.

Masuk Angin is common all over Asia and is pretty much limited to this region. I believe this is because a lot of Asian medicine and therapies are based on the circulation of blood through the body as an indicator to one's health.

Good circulation means your body is healthy and is strong enough to fight off common ailments on it's own. Poor circulation means you will have weaker immune system, longer healing and recovery times, and more likely to have relapses.

"Clawing the wind" as I poorly translate is scratching a coin over the back to produce those lines. It is supposed to help improve and regulate blood circulation. I find that it does work as I have it done whenever I feel unwell. It can be quite painful.

"Cupping" is almost the same concept, where they light a small flame in a cup and then close it over the body. The suction from the cup effectively gives you a giant hickey on your back. Again this is to help regulate blood circulation. This version is not so painful.

How does it work? Why does it work? I'm not aware of any scientific research behind it. To a degree it does work. It won't help you if you catch the flu as I don't believe it's ever helped me when I've caught a viral infection.
