I came to Jakarta for the first time in 1991 and at that time the Hotmen Bar was quite famous. The name was just an abbreviation of the hotels' name, Hotel Menteng, but it was very appropriate. It was loaded with "self employed young women", as they were called at the time and was very popular with expats. I remember taking quite a number of SYT's back to my hotel (Kartika Plaza, ah! There were 3 Hotmen bar clubs. Is it HM I you remember? HM II was for Arabs and Arab Girls near Pasar Cikini, seem to remember HM III was for the school kid discos. They were all in the vicinity of Gondangdia one of the mongering zones that flourished from the 1940's the other one being Princen Park. Chaiul Anwar wrote his poems in the bars and clubs of Gondangdia. So yes things change. Things are made more difficult, yet easier if we go with the flow. As the French say, "Plus ca change, plus see'est la meme". I first came to Jakarta in 1997 and foolishly didn't become a regular visitor until 2003 (why did I even wait until 1997 in the first place? I had allowed my friends to drag me to Medan on regular "boys" trips (not to say that this was without pleasure). Nonetheless, once I was hooked, I've been like an addict waiting for his next fix. Things have changed from 1998 to 2003 to 2014; I've been to a lot of the clubs, bars and karaokes (D's, Top Gun, MyBar, CJs, BATS, TigaPuluh, Red Square, Delilah, Three Horse, Today Country, Stadium, NuChina, Immigran, Dragonfly, Cosmos, Zen, 1001) through that period, and although some places have since closed (a moment of silence please gents as we respect the passing of some truly entertaining outlets) other, some may say, inferior outlets have sprung up to fill the void. The thing is that, at least to me, the nature of finding women has also changed. Many have shifted to electronic means of hunting, so it's not that the women aren't around anymore, it's just that you have to hunt for them differently and adapt a new process to wean out the ones you're not interested in. I now make dates rather than go to bars; it's easier on my stomach, liver and ears, which can only be good for my health. I actually get to become friends with quite a few of them; since a lot of them are educated (including doctors, lawyers, dentists, bankers etc) you can actually have a decent conversation with them. Maybe it's because I used to look for women in their early 20's whereas now, I find those in their late 20's much more interesting. Sounds like you are importing her to where you work, so this will not take away one of your chances to have fun in Jakarta right? If this is taking up one of your chances to go to Jakarta, run away screaming.

Otherwise if all you have to lose is the cost of the transport, I would go ahead with it, but don't be afraid to kick her out if she doesn't put out. Be quite upfront about what you expect before she gets there. Run through what you like to do in bed with her and make sure she is up for it. Interesting discussion. One thing I have noticed, many of the ways to find fun have moved online. I wonder what impact the internet has on the types of mongering places you describe? On my last trip to Jakarta, I did not go to any of the places that are often written about here (BATS / CJs / Blok M etc) instead I simply used the internet to have girls come and meet me at my hotel. So it was when no respectable Indonesians drank alcohol, only bules did or the low-class punks drinking hooch, as soon as middle-class kids started hanging out at Seven-11 the authorities start worrying they're drinking beer so it has to be clamped down on. Ditto internet porn, when it was restricted to the people who could afford expensive internet costs no one cared, only when all the kids can get it do the authorities feel they need to crack down..

When people become middle class they become more socially conservative. Look at Surabaya, it used to be second only to Jakarta for fun and games, now they love their Mayor there, a middle-aged jilbab wearing woman, but what precisely has she achieved? Well nothing really other than shutting Dolly red-light district and banning the sale of beer, ostensibly to stop kids drinking hooch, because as we all know the best way to stop people drinking hooch is to ban the sale of well-produced legal booze.

This is the future for Indonesia, the crazy old days are past and aren't coming back.

That's why I say Jakarta will become more like Malaysia, the trade will be limited to certain zones and run in strictly controlled ways, you'll have no difficulty getting what you want provided you are willing to go to specific areas to get specific regulated products, but the swinging free and easy days will be over.

It's progress I suppose and from an Indonesian point of view it must be good to see the country developing but I will still hanker after the older days, the more care-free days of wild abandon when Indonesia appeared to be an untamed frontier, somewhere only headcases would want to go, and not the nice sensible -dare one say it boring?- place it is becoming.

Indonesia is over 90% muslim and that percentage is even higher among working girls. Most Indonesians don't even celebrate Christmas for the most part so it's a non issue. Everything will be open. Many Jakarta expats will go to Bali or home to their own country at that time, so although the same number of girls will be in Jakarta, there is less competition from the guys during that period. The only problem at that time is New Year's eve. The traffic in Jakarta that night around Monas and Ancol is horrible. Avoid those areas that night and it's fine.

It's a coin toss. She might be a winner or she might be the opposite. Also, you didn't say how long she would be staying. If she is coming in for a day or 2, you can try it out and hopefully it will be great.
On the other hand, you have been there for awhile and you know what other options available to you. So if you enjoy the other options, you could go that route. At least you know where the money will go.
