I think it's a good report.

JAD is a valuable member of ISG, often providing useful insights and humorous comments on Jakarta's nightlife on this forum, free of charge. He doesn't promote his own services here. I think it's perfectly cool for a satisfied customer to comment on what he offers, they could be a valuable resource for someone new to the city and without contacts here.

With all due respect to JAD, it's not that different from somebody giving positive feedback on a service provider or venue.

Yes, the area of Blok M that is written about here (bars such as MyBar and Top gun) is safe for a stranger alone. Most of the action takes place on the one street where those bars are located, so you won't need to walk around much.

More or less true. There's some pretty tough characters on the street, but they seem to be there more to protect the punters than harass them. The only thing to be careful of is that the taxis that lurk in the area are often a bit dodgy. At the very least, you are usually better off taking a taxi that is cruising rather than one that's parked outside the bar and waiting for you. Or you could take a Silverbird and get them to wait, although I never bother.

I have enjoyed the scene at Mulia and Grand Hyatt a few times, but this time thought I'd venture out a bit more.

Yes, the area of Blok M that is written about here (bars such as MyBar and Top gun) is safe for a stranger alone. Most of the action takes place on the one street where those bars are located, so you won't need to walk around much.

Obviously you should take the normal safety precautions that any monger should take when going out for the evening: keep your valuables in the hotel safe, don't walk around with too much cash, don't use your credit cards in any of these places, lock your passport in the safe and walk around with a photocopy of the face page instead (thanks to Bulai69 for this suggestion).

A few weeks I posted about a warning that had been issued by the US Embassy about foreigners being targeted in some Jakarta bars and having their drinks spiked; something to be aware of. For me, the solution is simple: drink only beer, and make sure the bottle is opened in front of you.

Prive/value is okay for Oasis Amir, I've stayed there once. And it's next to Atrium Mall.
It's catering mostly for Middle East people, so many Arabs and their traditionally dressed women around. Even Saudi-channel in the TV in room.
Thats the reason I stayed there once only, didn't like it too much.

This hotel even has transit hour time, I was quite confused when I heard the name...Oasis Amir !

I found Jakartaafterdark on this site and took the nightlife tour last week. It was excellent and I not only felt like I saw a very good selection of the sex scene but safe and secure in the process. Great fun! The host was on time, clean-cut, extremely friendly and courteous and did not try to squeeze any extra money. The fee was fixed and in fact there was no rushing and we extended beyond 3 hours at no extra cost. The places we visited were varied and excellent including the famous soapy massage and some excellent clubs with very nice girls at great prices. As their advert implies, I think this tour not only could help avoid scams and overpricing but it definititely lets you see a bit of everything in a stress free way. The fee included transportation in a decent car. I also took the 8 hour day tour and that was really fantastic and I am certain that I was able to see more of Jakarta as a result. Money well spent and a fantastic time enjoyed!

I RTFF and I found the Oasis Amir Hotel a good value x price.

I hv a regular in Blok M. went back with me 3 times and always goes back in the morning where I will send her to Fatmawati, ATM, get some cash and pay her if I am short.

Once, went back together with another friend and her friend. Did not finish the biz as her friend want to go back and same for my friend. Told her I am cashless and would give her by transfer tomorrow since It's 3 am when she want to go back.

Next morning, she SMS me non stop to threaten me with all kinds of words that I have to be careful if I do not pay. Worst of all, she do not even have a bank account that I could transfer but uses her friend's which is some funny bank and BCA do not have TT with... So I have to leave my work behind and goes to the bank and TT the 300k to her. What a waste of my time... Considering that even when I did not bring her back. I tips her at least 50k.....

So much for freebie.... But yes.. once a friend pick up a Chinese Pontianak girl and at LM and check in at Malawai hotel. He asked his driver to go to BCA but could not get any money and he did not pay her.... That is consider Freebie? This girl is very new in blok m...Never seen her since.....

I do understand freebie is not free you still have to wine and dine them you just get the GFE and non pro with low mileage ,I love the mall action in blok m so many girl avalible like to meet foriegn and if you strike out you can always go to Malawai hotel 6th fl or my bar at night.

After a long break, I recently went back to Kartika as I had been missing the soapy massages...

...I ended up by paying her 300k (250+ tip) and she was quite pissed and expected 100k as tip. But given her service and attitude I thought that was enough. I had paid 100k to Cynthia as tip because of the excellent service that she had given.

A further thought on the section of your post referring to the tip you gave at Kartika:

Yes, the accepted minimum tip is 50,000 rupiah, with many guys (including me) giving 100,000 rupiah for outstanding service.

Unfortunately, we mongers may begin to experience more incidents such as what Spice Lover described, that is that the girls will start expecting 100,000 rupiah as a minimum, whether they deserve it or not. Part of the reason is simple economics, as the 250,000 rupiah house fee at Kartika has not increased since 2005, and the girls only receive 80,000 rupiah out of that 250,000 rupiah total.

Add in the recent doubling of the price of staple items such as rice, cooking oil, tofu/tempeh and kerosene, plus the tremendous pressure from the girl's family back home to send home more money, and combine this with the slight decrease in business in the Jakarta mongering scene during the last six months (i.e. less customers), and obviously the girls would like as big a tip as possible.

To illustrate this, the following happened to me recently (I did not post this story before now) - I stopped by Kartika, all of my favorites were either busy upstairs or off-duty, so I ended up choosing a girl who I had never been with before, 22, chunky but cute, she knew me by name even though I did not recall ever seeing her there before (she said she's worked there for over a year). Had a decent but not outstanding session and debated whether to give her the minimum 50 or 100 as a tip. Decided to give her 100,000 rupiah anyway, and I was shocked when she started complaining "is that all?" I replied in Bahasa Indonesian that 100,000 is a good tip, that I was a good customer and knew what the proper tip was, also that no Indonesian would give her more than that for the service received, and she quickly backed down and said sorry, sorry, thank you for the tip.

Needless to say, I won't be choosing her again!

I doubt if you'll find those phrases in most mainstream English-Bahasa Indonesian dictionaries, as they are street slang.

In Bahasa Indonesian, the adjective follows the noun (opposite of English), so the first phrase is "Madura-ese" Goyang while "Ayam" means both chicken (the animal) and a young prostitute in Bahasa Indonesian.

Last night I was in Maribaya and it was empty except for another fellow bule. There was a cute girl by name Rini from Jeppara and I asked her whether she would like to spend the night out, party and sleep with me. She readily agreed and we negotiated the rate for Rp.600,000 for the whole night. It was 8 pm and the price was till 5 am. She said in case she had to join me right away then I will have to pay a bar fine of Rp.155K and I agreed. I took her out to D's place for a drink and then went to Pondok Nirwana. Left her about 45 minutes back and here I am reporting.

The surprise element was the bar fine. I though it was restricted to Phillipines and Thailand. I guess, it will catch up here too soon. Or is it already in vogue?

I traveled a lot in Asia (Philippines & Thai), and in april I will be for my first time in Jakarta

I RTFF and I found the Oasis Amir Hotel a good value x price.

I ask to the experts if it is good to reserve for 375.000 IDR x night, or it is possible to have a better rate.

I woul like go to Atrium Mall in afternoon, and in the other places in nightime (Blok M, massages and so on). I think Oasis is very central for this program

Good choice or it is possible to find better hotel (location, service) for this budget?

That's exactly what I'm saying. It doesn't matter what laws get passed in Indonesia, there is no capacity to implement them.

Are there laws on repairing the roads? Yep, heaps of them. Try the laws on public works, or regional government, or transport... There are hundreds, but they're rarely put into effect.

I don't agree with this. As trivial as it is, it seems clamping down on pornography is more important to them than improving transport, etc. For example, I don't see any of the old tabloids anymore like Exotica or Lipstick. They set out to abolish those when playboy came and accomplished that.

Since this recent announcement, every indo web site I knew of with a pornographic format (like Bintang mawar) has been completely changed in format to not include any pornography anymore. They are obviously enforcing something.
