Generally Jakarta and Indonesia are very safe by American standards. The homicide rate per 100.000 is one of the lowest in the world. Below major European countries such as Germany or the UK. Crime-wise Jakarta is a lot safer than NYC. It looks shady, because in developed nations the state of disrepair of North Jakarta is associated with crime ridden neighborhoods. But that's just your normal third world environment. And the reason it will never attract tourists. But nobody owns a gun and violent crime is about the only thing authorities take serious.

Have you tried walking from Prinsen Park north to the KFC at the underpass to the mall? If I recall correctly, from early evening most girls will be at that location.
