I'm riding bikes now for 10 years in SEA (Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand), altogether around 80,000 km.

One broken collar bone and that was my own fault. So no big deal. If you can ride a bike.

A motorbike is good if you need to get to a place like Kelapa Gading where the traffic is horrible. I have a motorbike in Jakarta, but I don't use it often. It mainly just sits in the garage and collects dust. I'd love to have a bajaj to drive around in since those seem to impress the ladies. Those bajaj guys get a lot of hot pussy. At least they did in Blok M back in the day. Half of the girls there were dating the bajaj drivers.

I used McDonald's as a generic example to suggest you can meet girls absolutely anywhere. Any white guy can walk up to any Indonesian girl in town and ask them for their number. The chances of getting her number are very high. It doesn't require a lot of game. Indonesia is the only country I've been to that's like that.

For any of you who have more game than that then I'd suggest Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia across the road.

You just get an international drivers permit from your home country and carry it in Indonesia along with your foreign license. Bali police are experts at shaking down tourists who don't have the international license. They last 12 months but you can extend them by buying a stamp from your local office supplies store. If you want to be cheeky when they pull you over you hand them your library card. Education isn't a prerequisite to join the police in Indonesia although if you're female you must still be a virgin.

Thanks, an international permit will be cheaper than paying the police all the time. A stamp, must be one of those standard date stamps, I guess.

If you must ride a motorbike then surely it's better to take a Gojek.

Yes, Gojek is great. If you stay for a few weeks or so, it's perfect. But if you stay a bit longer, a bike is convenient. I would park at night in Jl Falatehan, blok M or Eastern Promise. Second hand bike, couldn't care less if it got stolen. Girls would hop on, very normal thing to do for them. Cruising around town, checking street hookers in Tanah Abang, Jaksa or Senen. Massage in GrandWijaya or Pedurenan, online dates in the shopping malls, too easy.

Nothing beats a motorbike, it is a good idea. How do you that with a riders license, OS? Do you use a local one?

I had a small Honda motorbike for 4 years in Jakarta and gave it away, a few years back.

Not having a license back then was not a prob, just pay 250 k damage if you happen to run into the police (always ask for a 'kwitansi' to fuck with them), but whilst on visit these days, they tell me police checks have become far too common to use it long distance.

The crunch is that if you do have an accident, some travel insurers may decline to cover you if you were driving and didn't have the international permit which just takes all the fun out of extending the permit validity with your five dollar stamp.

I am a digital migrant with a western income. I will be touching down in Jakarta around December 19 for up to 2 months. Touring Vietnam ATM. What is the best tactic for a stay of 1-2 months in or around Jakarta? Is it better to find a regular or just punt all the time? Thank you in advance.

Get yourself a motorcycle. Hire one or buy one. For two months in and around Jakarta. This will get you around incognito and provide immense value to your stay. You won't be able to fuck the bike but any girl you can get on the back of it you probably can.
