So OS decided to do a bit of investigating for the team and took the trusty motorbike for a spin in search of Rawa Malang.

This location is the last of Jakarta's downmarket lokalisasi's after the closure of Kramat Tunggu and Kalijodo. Located in North East Jakarta it would serve to contrast the extremes of where we could ply our craft. There is nothing about the trip to this locale that suggests you will find romance there. Think of a dusty traffic jam packed with container trucks for almost as far as the eye can see which is Jalan Cilincing Raya running East from Tanjung Priok port. Where this road crosses the Cakung drain, you need to get off and onto the aptly named Jalan Inspeksi Cakung Drain. Now be warned. It is called a drain because it is a drain, and anybody that has taken the time to peer into a Jakarta drain will know that they are not savoury.

Follow our drain South for a kilometer or two down a shitty single lane road and a cemetery will appear on your right. For the romantics that don't like death much you may look left where a huge mountain of garbage that has been collected will rise up. Fear not! For you are now close. A few "cafe's" which is what you have come for are situated along this road but continue on untill a bridge appears on your right and a small community juts out into the green of what is one of Jakarta's major cemeteries. This is Rawa Malang. Cross the bridge by foot and enjoy your time in the alleys. Each alley is lined with "cafe's", people, cats and chickens. The cafe's which will serve you beer by ladies with whom you may enjoy more intimate relations to the rear of the premises, the cats just lay about in the sun and the chickens run around and peck at stuff. Welcome to kampung life with a twist!

OS parked the bike outside the bridge, crossed over and visited mid afternoon, the locals were surprised to see a bule but they were friendly. OS had multiple invitations to sit down and chat which he did, they are always keen for you to have a drink of which you can do anytime, It is always a good excuse to tell them you are riding a motorbike and don't want to ride after drinking if they keep pushing you to drink. If you want a lady, the mama will cheerfully go and wake one up for you although there were ladies sitting around enjoying the afternoon quiet. She assured me they were always open. OS did ask the price of a lady but was given a "Bule price" of 400 K. The regular price would be around 150 K.

Now be warned, this joint is seriously downmarket. OS, who is well known for his love of hanging out in dives could not bring himself to sample any of the fair maidens at this location. The girls all had a world weary look and the watery eyes of girls that life probably couldn't serve any harder cards than what they already held and if the outside of the place was anything to go by, the rooms would have been very grim. This isn't the hotel Alexis by any means.

A ladyboy was very keen for OS to stay and talk but OS had seen enough and excused himself from the grasping hands on the banci. Went and retrieved the motorbike and left by the back route which skirts a dirt track around the cemetery perimeter, past a few fish ponds and trucking yards and exits at Jalan Madya Kebanten. OS had, and still has, no regrets about declining the offer of one of the fair maidens of Rawa Malang.

The fact that bule expats in JTK lead very charmed lives is a well known fact. The fact that most of them lose their Western wives if they were stupid enough to bring them is another well known fact.

Being a bule in Jakarta is a status symbol. Having a bule BF or lover is considered a status symbol. Consider it a TRUE shining example of "white male privilege".

Many highly educated women, especially of Chinese heritage are looking to hook up with a bule, if not in a relationship, then even in a "friends with benefits" situation. So long as you follow basic rules of hygiene and social etiquette, you will do well in Jakarta. Many of these women have their own money. Some have their husband's money (cheating is endemic in Indo, among both sexes).
