Well, it is interesting that he said about a year ago I had no credibility on this board because I carried my passport with me while in Jakarta. He has since admitted the reason he does not do so himself is because he would likely lose his passport owing to the fact he is usually drunk while traveling around the city. It made me wonder the state of his intoxication when he does post some of his negative posts here.

In any event, I also wonder how many of those who were caught up in the Blok M raid without their passport were in that position because they were following his advice posted here about not carrying such documentation while in Jakarta, advice that would have cost them either 25 million rupiah, or a night in a virtual jail.

An ex-pat friend of mine who lives in Jakarta reported to me one of his friends said based on what he heard from another friend there was a recent immigration sweep in Blok M, maybe at Top Gun, where they herded up the customers there and those who did not have original passports or Indonesian identification cards were given the choice of paying 25 million rupiah or spending the night at the station, which many ended up doing. I'm not sure, but there may have even been a requirement of a passport and an Indonesian ID. Card if one were an expat foreigner.

I was a bit skeptical (although we also have a report here in this thread of some similar actions by immigration taken outside one of the Novotel hotels recently). I did some internet research, and did stumble on a forum that essentially describes what my friend described, although the raid mentioned there was in June or late May. Sorry to hear about your crummy experience with the tip-mongers. I'd suggest never tipping someone who's given you little or no service (such as the guys in the hallway, the security folks, and the guy who got you a taxi). Simply smile and say 'sorry'. The deal is that these guys use that line on hundreds of people and very rarely (I mean extremely rarely) get a positive response.
