Exchange rate can be found in http://peniti.co.id/index.php/forex/rates

They are money exchange as well but too far from the central for most foreigner.

There are a lot of 24 hour money exchange on hayam wuruk across mercure hotel.

But exchanging the dollar in Indonesia is tricky, even for us local, because the only accept crisp dollar and big bill.

Also they have a list of dollar serial code that they prefer (make the most money).

I think ATM might be a good choice because of it.

For hotel exchange, check the online rate first. Some hotel rarely update and might give you good rate.

No tear, no wrinkle, no marking at all.

And they usually want new bill, old bill code usually fetch less.

Don't know about sim card but for taxi try "Bluebird" company (light blue color taxis) just outside of arrival door to your right. Avoid all others.

Entering "Lokasari" area towards the mall on the right there is a very small money changer shop run by Chinese owner. They always give me good rate for my euros.

i would bring only what is needed for the voa and maybe 20 dollars more in small notes. for the rest of the expenses i would use money from atm's that are rep001tered all over jakarta. not only for safety reasons, but moneychangers in indonesia are pains in the neck if your notes are not crispy fresh and printed in (a) certain year (s). also, they prefer 100 us dollar notes.

Don't exchange in the hotel since they will give you a raw deal. I would suggest that initially you exchange @ 100 dollars in the airport. There are money changers all over Jakarta. The one in Plaza Senayan gives a good rate. The exchange rate is dynamic, but, nevertheless it's been going between IDR 9200 to IDR 9500, depending upon the time and date of exchange. Most hotels would give you IDR 8000 to IDR 8500.

    Cheers

It really depends where you are staying here's some I've used about town. I also keep uptodate with the XE smartphone app. And if the rate has recently fluctuated in my favour I usually show it to the clerk who will invaroubly match or up the rate (need to be patient as it involves a call to the boss)

    - Ground floor Sarinah Dept. Store (same place as big MacDonalds) on Jalan Thamrin.

    - Various money Changers on Jalan Melawair in Blok M.

    - Bali Inter? On Ground Floor in Plaza Senayan off Jl. Sudirman. Popular for big transactions as good security

Ok noted. But I prefer delivery service as during night I am exhausted and lazy to hang out. Any nice website delivery should be ok.

    Blok M

I stayed at the M Hotel at Block M, a new and decent hotel BTW. I visited all the usual bars and with the usual results, but I was a bit surprised by a couple of things. I went to a Japanese bar in a lane across from Blok M and the woman said do you want to go straight to the girls or have a drink first. I asked how much was a beer and it was $100K, so I declined both, I thought If I can't afford the beer, it is unlikely I can afford the girls.

I went out with my squeeze to M point nightclub, there was a flyer for it in the hotel. I got there at about 9:00 pm and they had a live band, which I like. There seemed to be nobody else there but I saw waiters serving drinks to what looked to be a VIP area. Anyway, I got a jug of beer and was drinking it and some dudes wandered in and sat in the VIP area, then some more and so on. Then, a small army of girls marched in and were lined up in front of the VIP area, the dudes made there choices and the rest of the girls then marched back out again. It was very funny to watch.

While I was drinking some time during the night, girls had wandered into the club, I went to the kamar mandi several times and checked them out and they seemed very doable but as I was with someone I did not enter negotiations. So I guess the point of my story is that just about anywhere in Jakarta, or at least around Blok M has action if you want it.
