It's very safe in Jakarta, but still be careful as wherever you go there are places that it's better to avoid at night.

Choose a well known safe mongering location like classic, travel, malio or alexis.

And avoid US embassy if you can.

Most Indonesians couldn't care less what happens in the middle east, unless it relates to one of their sisters who is working there as a housekeeper. Any anti-American demo I've seen in Jakarta is about as big as two football teams and consists entirely of skinny little losers who dress up like deranged dental assistants and who are either unemployed or students at third-rate universities. Anti-American attitudes are NOT even close to being main-stream in Indonesia and the "threat level" is minuscule.

indonesians and particularly javanese are to my mind some of the most respectful people on earth. what they do like is for that respect. both in demeanor and speech to be reciprocated. you could most likely attend the demo and they would treat you politely. who knows? there could easily be some isg stalwarts in the mob.

i would say model the risk in a numerical way and bear in mind that the us loses more to gun massacres each year than indonesia does to mob violence. each is an anarchaic act which is at the heart of the terror, but my call is let your balls hang down and then go and put them to work.

i am in jakarta with some frequency, was there the for the recent ramadan holiday, there were a couple of days things were dark, for most of the time it was like the key for the door lock was lost to every bar and honky tonk in town. be heads up about where you are, and whats happening around you, you'll be ok. don't know where you'll be staying or how long you'll be there. have fun but be smart about things.

In case anyone is staying at the Crowne Plaza Jakarta. They have an in-room massage service. I got an hour and then offered a HJ. Total package was $40 USD. When I was last in Jakarta and wanted a change from my usual comfort zone places places like BATS, CJS, and I suppose Stadium to a point, I remember having a bit of an adventure one night by going blind into the unknown asking the Silver Bird taxi driver to take me from my hotel to what was called the Arab Disco or (Tiga Kuda 3 Horses) at the Hotel Menteng II on Jalan Cikini Raya 105.

Is it still there? And has anyone been there recently?
