Sr Bro MS, thanks for the pointer to your earlier FR. Will seach and read. As for Grand Angkasa according to Sr Bro MDII, the hotel is very dated. I am leaning towards "My Dream" hotel as it is relatively new. From feedback in websites posting reviews it seems the people staying there are quite satisfied. My only issue now is whether it is near any of the larger mall for hunting & shopping. It would be very helpful if brothers on this forum could give some latest feedback pertaining to this hotel and the nightlife surrounding it.

Also any suggesting of nightlife venue with doable girls would be very much appreciated.

Please scroll down a few years to my 2007 & 2008 reports. I stayed at Grand Angkasa both times I visited Medan and was happy there. The reports that I and a few colleagues wrote in 2007/08 should be informative.

No negative comments, other than that the hotels are ok but not as nice as you'd expect, certainly not true 5-star hotels.

The "main nightlife" of Medan, such as it is, is decentralized but everything's within a 10 minute taxi cab ride of each other. It was hard for me to believe that Medan is supposedly the third-largest city in Indonesia, it didn't seem that big to me.

I have once again being entrusted by my friends to organize a 4D / 3N mongering holiday to Medan in Oct 2010. I have read through the forum and had gathered some information. On checking with AirAsia, I noted that they have "Go Holiday" packages for hotels in Medan. I have narrowed the selection down to the following:

(1) Grand Sakura Hotel Medan.

(2) My Dream Hotel Medan.

(3) Grand Angkasa International Hotel Medan.

I need advise from experts on the Medan forum with regards to:

(a) Which of the above hotels in closer to the main nightlife in Medan?

(be) Which of the hotel is girl-friendly?

(see) Any negative feedback experienced by members here that we need to know about pertaining to the above hotels?

(the) Do you have any other suggestions that might be better than the above three shortlisted hotels?

I read online somewhere that some bros recommend Bandar Baru (In between Medan & Berastagi). Apparently it is cheap and plenty of selection. I tried searching more about it and only found that a prostitute was murdered recently. Most recent post was 2 years back. So any updates on this place? Is it safe for foreigners? Senior Bro MDII, nice to hear from you as I like reading your FR in the various forum. I was looking at the Airasia GoHoliday Package and "My Dream Hotel", looks interesting. My only question is that is this hotel close to the nightlife actions (mongering) and shopping mall (for day shopping)? There are 5 of us (last count) and our main purpose is golf & mongering (primary objectives) with mall shopping (secondary unless we can "hunt for FL" in the mall than that becomes a priority. LOL).

Most hotels are girl-friendly. Unless they are syariah hotels. I wouldn't bother with Grand Angkasa unless someone says they've refurbished. The only thing they have is The Soccer Bar which really isn't saying much (I went in there twice and didn't find any girl I wanted to spend any time with at all). My Dream looks interesting. And cheap (USD32 before taxes)! I checked their website and the place seems to be new; I'll have to log that into my database. What is your hotel budget? If you want something better, look at either Swiss-Belhotel, Aryaduta or Grand Aston.

Detail Report After Trip to Bandar Baru.

This was just two weeks before start of puasa. Two of us, cleared from Medan Polonia Airport at 8:15am, walked out of the airport to the main road and stopped a town taxi to Medan town (Rp30K). Did some work in Medan, then about 11:30am, took the motorized trishaw from Jln SM Raja to the Sinabung Jaya bus terminal / station, costing Rp20K, about one hour ride.

All the buses (angkut) going towards Brastagi or Parapat is from here, Sinabung Jaya bus station. We boarded the angkut (see photo) to Brastagi, but can get down at Bandar Baru, Sibolangit which is half way to Brastagi. Since it was Friday, the buses were packed. We managed to find two seats beside the driver. Told the conductor to drop us at Bdr Baru. He said Rp15K for two, but I gave him Rp20K and no balance (normal). There is a town midway Puntar Batu, a bit of jam here, otherwise clear. Got down in Bdr Baru, in 90mins. Got two ojeks and told them to take us to the best three hotels. They told us there are only three hotels with hot water, then we realized the weather is cold. The water is freezing. First hotel itself we liked and paid deposit, RP100K per room per day. Check-in and check-out times are flexible. The hotels are like individual houses with two rooms each. About 3:00pm went downtown for a so so lunch. Every trip (1 way) downtown is Rp5K / Rp10K by ojek.

Two methods for hunting, first method, the hotel staff (pegawai) will take us on their motorcycle visiting the cewek places, two or three in one house, until we choose one. The second method, is the hotel staff will bring the cewek to the room and we choose or reject. We preferred the second one. The hotel staff of the hotel we stayed was very accommodating, we even rejected three times and yet they bought in stock until we booked one. Mostly ST is the way of life, ST can be two hours, need to negotiate first. Is not very strict about timing. ST is Rp100K. LT overnight is Rp1 juta, so not worth it. This is a ST place. Can call the cewek anytime of the day, until about 2:00am. Had one who was with me from 1:00pm right up to 5:00pm, but the same Rp100K, but she earned some heavy tips for the task she did.

The next day took the angkut again, further up another 5km to taste the jagung bakar.

Impt note: The weather is cold and the water is freezing. Must have hot water.

Hotels: Many. Notable two hotels are Puncak Juwita (Rp100K / room) and Ananda nearer to town (Rp120K / room) both with hot water. Ananda have Karoake also.

Restaurant: There are two good restaurants near the Masjid. One opposite the Masjid, Rumah Makan Muslim Terang Bulan and one along the Masjid, see photo. Rumah Makan Sempurna (non-muslim).

We were there for a night & two days.

Firstly, I would like to thank board members for their advice on my trips and I thought I would take the opportunity to write my first report on my experiences in Sumatera. This is my first report so please forgive any mistakes or statement of the obvious.

Oh PS. Later in Jakarta I would meet the more hardened girls no clothes folding here, and back to sleeping with one eye open and no more that 400,000.
