You need transport to go to Medan redlight district-Jalan Iskandar Muda aka Jalan Nusantara in Google Map. The adjacent road, Jalan Gajah Mada, Jalan S Parman are the road where street girls stand.

Many thanks. For that first post I cut it down as it was too long, but here are more details.

Location wise, at the time the details were scarce and an old report mentioned getting a taxi driver and giving the name as supposedly it is notorious, but to me this meant the possibility of commision being added to the price. It was simply luck that it was glimpsed while on a city bus on the way to my accomodation, and it proved to be only about 5-6 minutes walk from my Pondok near the Mesjid Raya.

Looking at Google Maps later on, the best location information I can give is the following :

Firstly it is located next to a cross roads, and the various roads which converge at this point are.

Going W to E in front of the Hotel : Jalan Insinyur Haji Juanda

Going North from the Hotel at the crossroads : Jalan Sultan Mamun al Rasyid

Going South from the Hotel at the crossroads : Jalan Brigadir Jenderal Katamso

Alternatively, on Google Maps search for Hotel Antares Medan (it is just south of Mesjid Reya).

* Once on the ground at that Hotel, walk South and the road will begin to curve to your right.

* Now you're on Jalan Insinyur Haji Juand with traffic going past you as you walk.

* After a few minutes walking, you'll reach the Cross Road mentioned.

* Keeping on Jalan Insinyur Haji Juand, cross straight over it and Istana is huddled right there.

* Orange Brick building, with a Light Blue Sign and Orange Lettering for the Hotel Name.

I believe this is sometimes listed as Hotel Istana 2, but I don't know why.

Don't confuse it with Grand Istana which I believe is a completely different hotel in Medan.

Hotel Istana appears on the Web in early 2012 as part of a News Report on a student (Islamic Students I believe) protest at several locations where Hotels do 'extra services'. It was all still up and running when I went some months later, but keep in mind at least the possibility that Islamic Conservatism in Sumatra will get its way eventually, and manage to get the place shut down.

On the subject of Hijab wearing Islamic Students, I met plenty of them in Medan. It seemed that any Bule who was in the area and was friendly, found themselves enthusiastically assaulted with questions in English and it was all very cute and giggly on their part. It was also similar in a Mall where far less Conservative Student Girls would approach foreigners and ask them all these questions. Don't believe the shit "freelancer" story. There is no fl in indonesia, just some people don't see the mamasan in behind.

Medan is not a very good fuck city. Not recommend if your visit is solely fuck purpose.

Actually I do not know any not-girlfriendly hotels in medan. If you talk a bit with security or bellboys they always start talking about girls as usual. Most "working"girls in Medan and Berastagi are from Java by the way.

If your contacts do not work out I do advise to not pick up streethookers in medan as they usually all are quite chronic drug addicts in bad general health under the face make-up. I haven't visited the Medan thread for sometime and felt impelled to comment. I'll state for the record that my choice of city to party in is Jakarta anyday; the scope and possibilities seem to be endless there. However, I have been to Medan quite a few times and have a reasonably good feel of the city.

Smallbird did have an interesting FR (although I would not be one to go for the street hookers either here or in Jakarta) but I have to find myself disagreeing with his statement that there are no FLs in Indonesia. They are certainly plentiful in Jakarta and certain other cities and even in Medan. Although somewhat scarcer than you may find elsewhere. I always believe that keeping your eyes and ears wide open can yield startling results. You can find women in the shopping malls (shop assistants as well as FLs) and this applies to Medan as well as Jakarta. I once came back from a karaoke session with friends without any "companion" and, on arriving back at the hotel at almost 2am, I spotted a very attractive young woman sitting waiting in the hotel lobby. She was waiting for her friend so I asked if she'd like to come up to my room to wait instead. No price negotiated, she came up and we had a very enjoyable time before passing her "taxi money" to go back home with her friend. A classic case of being ready to see and take the opportunity when it presents itself. I have to agree though that Medan is not the place to choose as a fuck city but my friends enjoy going for the relatively easy traffic and decent food as well as possibilities for fun. And they are out there.

I agree with Medanboy that I have yet to find any non girl-friendly hotels but it's always good to check if the hotel is a Syariah compliant hotel. If that's the case, they will not allow you to check in with a girl unless she's your wife. You should however be more than safe in any decent chain hotel (Aston, Aryaduta, Marriot, Swissbelhotel, Best Western for example) or for that matter in any of the hotels you see people have commented on in here (Tiara, Danau Toba, Grand Angkasa, Soechi etc).

Riverstar, I hope that helps and we'll hopefully see an FR from you on the subject. I do go a similar route nowadays but if that lets you down, do have a back up plan. Chat to some of the salesgirls in the malls and strike up a conversation. If you picked correctly, you should get their mobile numbers within about 5-10 minutes. Medan airport is small. After you get out from the airport, a lot of touts would say hi to you. Don't bother them. Go straight to the main entrance. Get out, Just in front of the traffic circle you see the green colour Petronas petrol station. Go over there, get a bluebird taxi. Say "Argo?" Argo=Meter, bluebird always use meter, just to reconfirm. Otherwise you could ride becak (medan tuk tuk). For foreigner, unfortunately you pay the same price as bluebird taxi for becak. Always negotiate first. They will say 50k. 20k and act in front of you, blabla. If the distance is 2km. 2km x 3000rp, give them 6000rp. If they don't accept, walk away, the price quickly jump off the cliff under most circumstances.

Tarif kamar (room charges) 35k, well, no star hotel. 35k for one hour rental.

Harga kondom (condom price) 5k, if you buy from the hotel staff or girl. Bring yourself, medan condom is cheaper comparing to Malaysia, even both of them are major rubber production country.

Ok. 150k+20k+35k+5k=210k, your fucking cost at this red light street.

Not including the becak fare of yourself, plus 40k depending where you are coming from. Last time I made a deal at 30k, but I happy the info becak driver gave me. I paid extra 10k to him as tips.

So, the roundtrip cost is 250k, not so cheap comparing to kalijodo, dolly,"lokalisasi" (red light district) in other part of indonesia.

For overnight girl, the fee is 500k overnight. Ask becak driver, they have lots of contacts. Tell them no money no deal. They are confident, they agree promptly. So just pay 500k to the girl for overnight. Becak driver gets commission from the girl afterward.

For nightlife. Sadly there is no nightlife in medan by my standard. No girl in M3, no in Retro. But if you like to hear some live music, kill some time at night, go to Retro in Capital Building. Close to JW Marriott Hotel. 100k cover charges. Live music on every Friday, saaturday night. The only girls in the discotheque there is outside girl for overnight. They ask 1-2 million (juta) , can negotiate, but the lowest price is 700k. They start coming at 11pm. Don't believe the shit "freelancer" story. I made a trip to Medan in November 2012 and had a ball of a time. Stayed in Danau Toba Hotel. Made friends with the Security Guards (you can make friends with any one of them! Just be noce, say hello always, and tip-tip-tip! Haha!) manning the lobby doors. This section won't take that long to read. Go down 4 or 5 pages and you'll soon learn that the Soccer Bar in the basement of the Hotel Grand Angkasa is a decent club / pick-up spot. You shouldn't have any trouble finding a young lady who'll want to stay with you overnight. Just don't over-pay, the rates here should be lower than in Jakarta (although some girls will get greedy).

The Pattaya Spa is only a couple of blocks away, walking distance, for a massage plus extras.
