So I plan to jump on the train from Jakarta to Semarang (and maybe Solo) to check on the girly scene. Will do a field report on return.

Any updated recommendations on 'pick-up' locations or are apps more the way to go in this town?

Also, any recommended 4 or 5 star hotels?

The next afternoon, decided to try something I saw listed on google: Eleven Spa and Karaoke. I t was early afternoon, so the KTV side was closed and I went to the spa side. Here the room price was around 4 ook and you negotiate with the girl for the extras price. Having gotten fooled the night before with body types, I tried to pick as carefully as possible to find a thin girl, but after picking and she took off her clothes, really another thick girl. This girl was a little more energetic and kind of fun, but CFS was 700 k and CFS + CBJ was 1 million. With mediocre service. The KTV openend a little before I was leaving, so I didn't take a look, but I suppose it will be like Legends. Overall, disappointing.

Had to do some work in Semarang. I'll give the first report here in 10 years!

As you drive out of the airport, there are tons of banners advertising Legends Spa and KTV, which as it happened, was near my hotel and the driver specifically pointed it out to me as we drove by, saying if I wanted to drink and / or go to an adult spa. So of course, I went there that night! The facilities are in the Grand Edge Hotel and pretty nice. The elevator takes you to the KTV on 3rd floow. The spa is listed on the 2nd floor, but you can't reach it directly through the hotel elevators, you have to walk through the KTV and then go down a flight of stairs. I went very early evening and the girls were a little on the heavy side for my tastes, but I was in the mood, picked a girl with a pretty smile. But really it was difficult, she was pretty thick from the waist down. Not really fat, just thick. And no BJ. Still with really good effort, I was able to complete the deed. The total was around 1. 2 million. As I was walking around, the girls working the KTV were significantly prettier, but didn't seem worth it to book the KTV and then a girl just for myself, especially since I wasn't there for the karaoke.

Flew into Semarang around 9PM, place was flooded after some heavy rain which was quite funny driving around through 300-400mm of water, checked in to hotel. Showered and headed off in search of Ciblek.

Though I would check out the girls around Poncol station but the streets were too flooded so asked the driver to take me to Sunan Kuning compleks, past the airport and in a little.

SK was busy being a Saturday night, the quality of the girls was variable but not as good as I expected. Being a bule you attract a bit of attention and not all girls are into bule's so you can get the cold shoulder when you approach the girls. All this can make you appear a bit of an oddity when in a place like SK. It is also very easy in a place like this to suffer from the "child in a lolly shop" syndrome where the choice is simply so overwhelming that you are unable to make an objective decision so you wander around in constant circles.

Stopped to talk to a few people, most are there having a good time although one local seemed quite aggressive right from the outset, swaggering around and carrying on saying something about polis. I didn't pay a lot of attention to him figuring he was just a fat local wannabe which I think he was but it is always hard to tell...

I used to visit Semarang fairly regularly when I was working, spending up to 6 weeks a time there. I used to go to SK often enough, but like you, I found that bules were tolerated by the pimps, but not many of the ladies showed much interest in us. I had a cow of a time trying to arrange 2 ladies at once, and some actions they just flatly refused to do. I am a decent sized bloke and never really felt intimidated by the 'corner boys', but I was always wary of their presence and frequently had one of them say things in Javanese, which I couldn't fully understand (my grasp of Bahasa was reasonably good). I learnt the first time the value of finding a girl while cruising in the cab, then paying him handsomely to wait, then get dressed and get back in the cab and go before the corner boy could catch up for 'extra protection', which basically was 50k (2005/6) bully money. I never paid the idiots the first time despite protestations from them that all customers had to pay protection, and a starqueen cab showed up like batman at a joker fight, so I got in and went', but my work colleagues all said it was not a good place for bules.

Amazingly, I just found a booklet from the PT Nyonya Muneer factory tour that I had picked up in 2008 (may be time to clean my house). It describes their entire product line of over 100 traditional medicines.

If you do visit their museum, maybe you can pick up a free sample of one of their best-selling products, 'Jamu Sehat Perkasa + Ginseng' which is advertised as 'excellent for men who lack energy, are short of breath, and experience backaches during sex. '

Hey, you may not need it now but you might as well keep a couple of doses nearby in case of emergency.

They also make this medication in cream form, which "contains turtle oil and is useful to increase stamina and a man's self-confidence." I'm not sure how rubbing turtle oil on my dick can increase my self-confidence, but at least any nearby female turtle will become aroused.

In your opinion is Semarang worth a 2 or 3 night trip purely for mongering?

I live in Singapore and there is a cheap daily flight. Just looking for a new playground. I'm usually a lone ranger to Jakarta (prefer Kota) but have also mongered in Batam and Balai, as it goes with the old horny crowd here in Singapore!

I don't mind the loud Indo clubs (picking up from them I mean) and the mall / sauna / Jakarta Hotel Travel / Classic type scene.

Don't bother and stick with Jakarta or worth a look? I will have no qualms visiting Sunan Kuning.

I enjoyed my one-night visit to Semarang in May 2008; my post about that visit is less than 2 dozen posts down, which shows you how rarely people post about Semarang.

Having said that, if you keep your expectations low, I think you'd enjoy a 2 or 3 night visit here. There's a section of town with some old buildings, an interesting new Chinese temple, and a new mosque with a high tower, I went to the top and enjoyed the aerial view of the area. A local traditional medicine factory, PT Nyonya Muneer, has a museum that's worth a 30-minute visit. And, if the "po-ci" tea shops are still operating, it might be interesting to check them out. I'm also happy to recommend my hotel, the Santika Premiere, right downtown just 50 meters from the center of town at Simpang Lima, where the “po-ci” tea shops are located (read my post for more details).

Ok then. It would seem that nobody had much to offer on post Lebaran returns so your trusty reporter just had to venture out once again in search of higher learning.

Starting in Semarang with a quick trip into SK. Got the taxi to take me straight up the hill, therefore bypassing that fat son of a pig that extorted me last time heh heh! OS is back so f? $atyou.

Place was quiet, one or two girls only at each place but there werent a lot of players either. A tip for White guys is to get taxi driver to ask the girl first whether she would lke to do Bule, some of them won't but a discreet approach often does the trick. Some of the girls here can be a bit chunky but there are still some younger slimmer ones. Soon found a nice girl whose name eludes me. She had big firm hooters which always makes me feel good. 200k for short time. Too much maybe, but I wasn't in the mood for arguing and I didn't want to linger.

Her room was immaculate, clean, service was good. She gave me her number but unfortunately was on the highway out of there next day so no opportunity to follow up.

But it was good to get back on the horse.

Like you say for Javanese to be aggresive like this straight up was unusual. It's a shame because all the other males around the place were nice as could be.

I wasn't shitting myself as much as in some situations for it's not usually the noisy dog that has the bite but it isn't really what you want after a long nights mongering.

But I can't help but think that it would be worthwhile showing him the error of his ways so he doesn't think that this is what he can do to any bule who wants to venture there.

You really have guts to visit SK. Even for local, that place is on the low level income, so not many brave enough to go if they not familiar with the situation. From what I heard, locals use to pay just +- 150. 000 per FS. I think that he is a local mob (or "preman") who want take advantage of you. And like Mighty Spearsman said, he probably on drug. Even if you call the local police, SK usually already pay a regular bribe, so they won't be fair to you.

In the web (local forum) reports from SK was very scarce, last reported on 2007. But local usually don't get any trouble there. So again, maybe he was just take advantage of a foreigner which in his opinion / mind have a lot of money.

Jumped out the taxi and told him that I had a good friend in the police in Semarang (which I didn't, but figured it was worth a try). This seemed to [CodeWord140] him off even more although he seemed a little reluctant to use real violence to get his way although a lot of shouting. There wasn't really that much I could do at this stage. A good head butt would have sent him backwards into quite a deep sewer but on the balance of probabilities, It just didn't seem like the smartest thing to do at that point in time.

In hindsight I don't think I was rude at SK as I try to always be as respectful as possible and this guy was quite aggressive right from the outset. The question for any of you that know Semarang and Maybe SK well is who was this guy? He could possibly do with some mentoring on his style, I would be keen to help him with this.

I'm happy to read that you did not use any physical force on that jerk, as in any situation like that one, as an outsider / foreigner, you will always be the loser.

It's actually pretty unusual for a Javanese person to be that publicly aggressive, perhaps he was high on something or drunk (or desparate for cash). Indonesians will always respect you if you stay cool and calm in these situations. It's possible that you might have been able to leave without paying anything, but on the other hand you got away cheap by paying 200, 000 rupiah, so no real loss.

A couple of guys offered to find me the girls but they just went to the same places I had already looked so wandered off. The complex is very tight over a small area.

Finally spied a girl that looked good with a fantastic set of tits bursting out of her top. Said I had no money left, just 200K so he took that although he was still pretty pissed off spending a long time telling the taxi driver something that I couldn't understand.

I must admit I was quite pleased to get back to the hotel. No I probably won't be going back to SK or Semarang anytime soon, this is the second time I have been to Semarang and both times I have found the people quite averse to bules.

Just stayed last week in Century Park Hotel in Jakarta and found in my room a paper: "Prostitution, gambling and drugs are illegal and therefore prohibited in this hotel" and a lot of nonsence about visitors to your room have to be registered, no ladies after 11 pm, etcetera bla bla bla.
