i will be in surabaya for three nights the end of november, and i would like to find a hotel that is central to the action.

i will be sampling dolly, the discos, the various brothels around town, and maybe take a trip to tretes and/or tandes...definitely a full agenda.

i need high speed internet connections for a vonage (viop) laptop phone for business.

i need the hotel to be girlfriendlly, which doesn't seem to be an issue, even for 5 star hotels, based on what i have read of the reports on the board.

i need a hotel that is less than $60 a night, and preferably one that is significantly cheaper than that, with high speed internet, and reasonable accomodations, at least to the standard of a hampton inn, or a comfort inn or something. just decent accomodations...it doesn't have to be real fancy, but it does need to be clean, and have high speed internet connections.

i have scanned the board for hotel information, and i've noticed a number of hotels mentioned in various posts, but nothing specific about the convenience of location, high speed internet, etc...

i've done some research, and i'm considering staying at the garden palace hotel, jl. yos sudarso 11, surabaya 60271 indonesia. anybody have any direct experience staying at this hotel? high speed internet? girl friendly? good location? etc...

i'm open to suggestions for alternatives, and appreciate the help. thanks in advance.

I'll vouch for Tretes as being one HOT location packed with cute young girls who give excellent service. Just left there yesterday and all prices were negotiated down to two hundred for three hours. This is the place for Ramadan! Hotels were empty and lowered prices twenty percent.

recently i was back in tretes (on the way to and from bali).
i really like this place, it is cool, relaxed, safe, and there are only a few tourists around.
but its always a puzzle to find it by car. i made a few circles before i found the right road again.

when i arrived i went straight to hotel tretes view, its nothing special but its clean and has hot water price around rp 200k.

no need to really negotiate the prices are "fixed" rp 200k for 3 hours. i think that’s a fair price, but rp 150k is possible too i guess. ask a motor driver to bring you, for a newbie it's almost not possible to find the girls yourself, the houses are rep001tered all over town in small streets, it’s a real maze.

the girls the best thing in tretes, they are cheap, look great (most), young (18 and up), give good service and have a good attitude. the choice is enormous, it’s a candy shop. bali should be like this.

one thing is sure, i will be back ;-)

Good informative report HT, though I'm surprised you posted it in the Surabaya thread, this isn't the most visited part of the forum and your post might be missed by any visiting newbie. I assume you spent most of your time there though you chose not to visit JJ's in the Marriott or Desperados in the Shangri La, not your scene I take it. I agree with you about Jogja by the way, the only town in Indonesia where I never scored a trick.

I love Indonesian women and rate them just above Thais, but they're my number one and number two spots, you however appear to be rather jaded in your opinion of Thais, would you like to elaborate?

Well, I cannot supply you with a similar report like the one underneath, hehehe..

One thing I could add in this report is the Jl. Kedungdoro in Surabaya.. Compared to Dolly this place is much more quite. But still, there are about 6 brothels, one after the other ( i.e. on the same road). Price is about 250000, if I remember right.. In some places you can do as many shots as you want, others will "trough"you out after one.

There is no hussle at all, have a drink and take it easy befor you choose.., The girls will sit in front of you on a couch, they dont try to get your attention, you are free to choose whoever you want. The girl will take you to the room she lives in. Simple " shower" et voila. Met two french marinirs when I went there the last time (well, not in the girls room, but in the "choosing area, hehehe)

Just pass the Kedungdoro in a taxi you will see the "signs" and find it easy.

1. general information:

indonesia consists of over 18,000 islands. the most populous of these is java where the capital city jakarta is located and the most popular tourist destination is bali, the next island to the east. this report will mostly concentrate on these two.

getting there: your gateway will be most likely either jakarta or bali (denpasar) airport. a large number of airlines fly to both cities from different countries. from bangkok a one month return ticket will cost around 10-15,000 baht flying either thai airways or garuda indonesia airline. both have daily flights to either bangkok-jakarta or bangkok-bali. garuda is the cheaper, however thai maybe more reliable in terms of schedules. in pattaya lots of travel agents sell cheap tickets on soi post office.

visa: most "western" nationals will get a sticker visa on arrival. you must have usd $25 on hand and a photo. valid for 30 days and not extendable.

weather: indonesia lies near the equator and the climate is strongly tropical. among your destinations, highlands such as tretes will be cooler but either bali, jakarta or surabaya are extremely hot year around.

seasons: as most of your activity will be indoors you don't need to concern too much about rainy season however holiday seasons like dec-feb and jun-aug can be very busy in bali. also, the hotels can be fully booked by local tourists on weekends in tretes. generally to travel on weekends or public holidays is not a good idea anywhere in the country because of domestic weekenders. also, dolly of surabaya completely closes down during ramadan festival (usually sept/oct) for a month. tretes is always open and neither is bali affected much by ramadan.

money: local currency is the indonesian rupiah. the rupiah has been reasonably stable for the last few years around 10,000 rp= $1usd. it is very easy to change most hard currencies in bali or jakarta but outside these the usd is the most accepted. you might find that only very few places change for example gbp, dem or cad in surabaya and maybe none in tretes. travellers cheques are also mostly accepted only in jakarta or bali. there are various atm are in every city however the withdraw limit can be very low, such as rp. 200,000 ($20) in some. credit cards are accepted in larger hotels however not in brothels.

people: what a joy, compared to thailand, both the javanese and balinese people are extremely nice and friendly to foreigners. you will ususally be pampered by their kindness all over the country. public security is very good, crime rates low, you have very little reason to worry about security. it is not about tough laws but rather the kind hearts of the locals.

dangers and annoyances: despite of the above, you will be perceived as wealthy and should be reasonably cautious, especially on public transport. the aircon buses of jakarta might be okay but in surabaya use rather the taxis. "bluebird taxi" have courteous drivers who speak some english. also, because so few foreigners visit java, you will be observed as some kind of curiosity and will be the center of attention wherever you go. everything you do or say will be disseminated and passed on by gossip. returning so many greetings can also become a nuisance after a while.

one wonderful positive thing about most of java island is the nearly complete absence of stray dogs. yes, you can walk freely without worrying of those ugly diseased mongrels of thailand and cambodia. bali however has many stray mongrels. shame!

beggars: there are beggars in large cities however they are quite timid and not agressive like the ones in cambodia or the philippines. please give responsibly and don't make foreigners targets for their generosity.

traffic is mild in some cities however in surabaya it is totally mad and just crossing a road on foot can be a nightmare. buy a map and plan your trip so that you have to cross as few roads as possible.

language: on java and bali all locals speak the indonesian language which is nearly identical with malay. it is considered a very easy language to learn and soon you will pick up a few words. the script is in the roman alphabet and easy to pronounce. you will easily read menus in restaurants, signs at railway stations, etc.

food: not as varied or delicious as thai cousine but still quite good and very cheap. unlike cambodia, it is easy to buy clean and good local fare at local prices. for a start, here you can read the menu and the locals are a lot more helpful too. you will eat well. lot of dishes tend to be very spicy though or served with chillies on the side. many shopping centres have food halls with varied and delicious food for very cheap prices. count on $2 or less for a complete meal.

accomodation: unfortunately in java there are lot less hotels than in thailand, they are generally less clean and cost more. you will have to book ahead on weekends to get any room at all. bali is well supplied with quality and cheap accomodation.

2./ comparisons with other countries:
first of all while thailand is totally overrun, there are very few tourists on java. as a result, people are not used to dealing with foreigners, which can be good and bad. very few working girls in java had experience with western men so they can be more reserved. however there is also no such strong stigma against mixing with foreigners as in thailand.

while in thailand you might just be barely tolerated for your money, in indonesia you seem to be genuinely welcomed wherever you go. also because of the similarity of the two languages, more people speak at least some english than they do in thailand. there is always someone nearby who can help you out at train/bus stations, shopping centres, etc.

as infrastructure is less developed, using public train/bus to get around the country is more hassle than it is in thailand but still manageable. there are many interesting sightseeing attractions around the country and many indonesian cities are more lively than thai cities. for a start there seem to be more parks and other pleasant public places (maybe except in surabaya).

foreigners seem to be welcomed at brothels and often even get local prices in java. conditions in javanese brothels are quite civilised, well above cambodia and in some instances even above of thailand.

3./ particulars of cities
jakarta: once cited as the largest brothel area in asia, kramat tungrak of north jakarta is now closed. however given the size of the city of course there are other other areas of brothels. other wsg forum members mention pick-up bars such as: berlian, aphrodite, mybar, the club, cj's, bali hai, tiga puluh, etc. most of these operate at night and are expensive when compared to thailand. shopping malls: for example 'blok m' is often mentioned. if you go there, surely you will attract lots of attention from everybody. of course, because you will be the strangest looking man around. girls may look and smile. however it is still a thousand miles from getting a fuck. try it, you can take the quick 'busway' from sarinah s/c near jalan jaksa.

bogor botanic gardens: just an hour by train from jakarta. it is very beautiful, worth a look. again, many girls walking in pairs. some smile and say hello. however how this translates into a quick fuck is unclear. as there are so few foreigners there, surely there is no established custom yet. girls are there for the park and not for finding men. if you go, make sure to take the more expensive express train from gambir station (ticket $1). the economy train sucks (ticket 20c).

bandung: some member mentioned house #15 on bahureksa street. yes, it is there. it's a nice quiet little street with lots of doctors practices and nice houses. the worst kempt building is #15. it's nearly in ruins. also a ruined old car in front. again, very few foreigners in town, you will feel strange. as you walk past the (very painted) girls will shout 'hello'. they are young but it seems too much trouble to go just for that one house. bahureksa street is ne of the train station, about 30 minute walk.

there are a number of fairly obvious places jalan dalen kaum (just south of jl. asia africa). simple sign outside reads:'massage', but their real business is self explanatory. again, in shopping malls around town you will attract lots of attention and smiles. there is a very nice shopping street north of town, jalan cihampelas (also called jeans street). possibly it has the largest concentration of shopping malls in town. it's an interesting place to look around. also a large university nearby. once you are there have a look at the zoo next door. if you are lucky you might see the elephant having an erection. his dick is huge. so is the she-elephant's hole. they can't fuck though because each is chained to a pole metres apart from the other. really pathetic sight.

yogyakarta: this is one town that really sucks. you really have to be careful of thieves here. it's not a nice place, full of hustlers trying to sell batiks, tour, transport, accomodation. you would be best to avoid it alltogether. otherwise there are some brothel areas. someone mentioned jalan solo (jl. urip sumoliarjo) area ne of tugu train station. there is one nice shopping mall called 'mal malioboro' on the main street (jalan malioboro). again, girls walking in pairs and smiling back at you. parangtritis is a beach holidaytown for yogya residents. someone mentioned the brothels there. it's 40 km by bus. to find the brothels (and accomodation) you will need a map though. it seems too much trouble again. there are easier ways. read on.

batam (in sumatra): supposed to be the sex-holiday town for singapore weekenders. it's a long way from jakarta. better get there from singapore or malaysia by boat. will post a separate report in future.

surabaya (and surrounding areas): the second largest city in indonesia, with a population of 3 million. busy, crowded, not a nice place to live in but an undiscovered gem for the devoted sex-tourist. details further in this report.

bali: there is a lot to do to keep your willy busy here. the girls working are mostly from java. many are attractive. also details are following.

4./ the famous 'dolly entertainment area' of surabaya, east java

4/1. what is dolly?
it's a collection of short-time bars, karaokes and watering holes covering a large area. it's big. local taxi drivers proudly boast that it's the biggest of it's kind in asia. obviously they haven't seen south pattaya or angeles city yet.

4/2. visual description, getting there, etc:
as you take the taxi from town, you get off the main road and into some narrow lines, hardly passable by cars. drink and food stalls both sides intermixed with thai style massage parlour lounges. however there is no glass wall between you. most are pretty basic and low key. the cushions on the stair-like tiered red seats that accomodate the girls are well worn and dirty, often so are the walls. lighting is not that great either. some girls are very beautiful, many are average but all young, starting at 19 and not more than 28-30.

you will only get the line-up at night, after 7pm. before that time they just open the door for each girls room and you choose from there. dolly is open 24 hours but it really starts rocking at night. 99.9 percent of customers are indonesian men. there are some japs and chinese but very rarely will you see another westerner. the price is the same for all girls and all customers. in fact it is often written on the wall "short-time (or service) rp.70.000" ($7usd).

geographically, dolly is located about 3km southwest of the center of town (gubeng station). a taxi from there will cost no more than rp. 10-15,000 ($1-1.50). (taxis charge a minimum of rp.10,000 for any trip in all of indonesia). it is near pasar kumpang and pasar jarak markets, on the side-streets of jalan girilaya. there is even a little street called jalan dolly. the locality's name is 'putatjaya', postcode:60255. all taxi drivers will understand if you say: dolly, wanita (girl), jiggy-jig. taxi drivers just drop you off and they take no commission at all. then you are free to wander around. many papasans (but not all) speak some english.

4/3. comparisons with south pattaya, a/c, etc.:
first of all, there are very few foreigners at dolly. you will feel strange but nevertheless you will be welcomed in most places and by most girls. there are massage/brothels, karaokes but no go-go bars (as yet). with $7-$8 a pop (1-1.5 hrs) the price is very reasonable. you pay this to the boss (usually a man-papasan) after you finished. also, you might give a tip of $1-$2 to the girl but definitely no more than that! long time/take away is also available by negotiation.

4/4. the deal: if you arrive daytime you will be led to various girls rooms and pick one. night-time you pick from the sitting-display in the bar area. in her room she will wash your dick only. bj is given a matter of course standard, you don't have to ask for it. most of them suck bare back. condoms are available if you don't have one and need it for rp.5000. good idea to bring your own lube though. you get 60-90 minutes and you can cum twice or more.

the beauty of the story is that you actually fuck them in the room where they live. there are all their teddy-bears, cosmetics, cds, clothes. it's like fucking your gf without the trouble of having one. also, because she is at home, usually she will be more relaxed than she would be in a strange place like your hotel. the rooms follow the basic principle of a small cubicle with water hose in one corner where you can wash. that is also where you [CodeWord140], by the way. the room will contain her own furnishings, decorations. there might even be air-conditioning in some. one room can be quite lovely while another bare, depending on it's occupant.

4/5. cost of company: the standard damage is either rp.70,000 or 75,000 (280-300 baht). often there will be a sign in the bar saying this. at the end the girls hardly ever ask for a tip but you might want to give a small amount like rp.10-20,000 but do not give more.

where the price is not displayed it still cost the same but occasionally they might try to squeeze more out of you. you can also buy drinks to consume together. cola about rp.5,000++ and small beer rp.10,000 and up. better ascertain the price of drinks when you order. on top of this is your taxi fare but that's all. still very cheap. you can fuck five a night and only spend $50 all inclusive. they also do doubles and groupies if you ask, although may be inhibited.

4/6. attitudes: have to emphasize that all through java and bali you are likely to meet some of the loveliest, most unspoilt people on earth. their life is hard and it brings out the best of them. they smile a lot are happy and will treat you well as a guest. much more than snobbish thais do. this refers to the men bosses and the working girls too. however, you are still very strange to most of them and you will possibly have a better time with a girl in a brothel in bali who is more used to foreigners. (but there are lot more beautiful girls at dolly plus greater selection). some might refuse to service you mainly because they think your dick is too big but most will have no problems at all.

4/7. scams and security: despite all the above you still better becareful. visiting daytime is fine. no hassles at all. but as the night advances and many people get drunk the alcohol and the dark might bring out some unpleasant attitudes. in fact i would suggest that you start early in the afternoon, get your things done by 9pm the latest and leave. there are always lots of metered taxis around.

nice as they are in daylight, as it gets dark some guys might start to hassle you for drinks or cigarettes or money because they perceive you as someone very rich. from 8pm onwards there are security patrols circulating which is 4-5 men in uniform with batons. the bars pay them and some might even add rp.5000 to your bill at night time to cover expenses.

not too many yet but there are still some scams. one with the drink prices. ascertain how much they cost before the bottle is opened. also, if you pick a girl make absolutely sure that she is intending to fuck you, before you shut the door behind you. once the door is shut and you come out again five minutes later you might be charged full price even if nothing happened. if she decides that your dick is too big for her you will still have to pay. might be able to haggle it down to a couple of dollars but it is still a hassle and better avoid it. also, if you get angry for whatever reason (just like elsewhere in asia) try not to show your anger. with smiles and gentle negotiations you will get much further and keep the peace.

4/8. bits and pieces: -the lonely planet indonesian phrase book is a good investment. -metered taxis charge a minimum of rp.10,000 even for the shortest trip. - carry your hotel's business card to show taxi drivers. -a local map from a bookstore is also a good idea, as some taxi drivers don't quite seem to know where they are going -also carry lots of small face bills as change can be hard to get.

looks of the girls: think of gauguin paintings. many indonesian girls look like that. it's an acquired taste. some say they are beautiful, others say they are not. compared to thais, their features appear a bit rougher, darker. also, often there is a fine line of moustache. yet there are many with very harmonious and sexy features. they tend to be very hairy down there and a shaved hole is extremely uncommon although can be found.

5/. other famous areas of surabaya:
5/1. moroshinan (tandes) is the no#2 brothel district after dolly. it's smaller and more far but with similar pricing. 10km east of town, along jalan raya tandes. a taxi will cost at least rp.30-35,000 one way.

5/2. even lower in quality is tambak asri (jalan tambak asri), about 6 km nw of centre. mostly older girls here and it's very unlit, unsafe area. not recommended for foreigner.

5/3. jalan diponegoro, starting from joyoboyo bus terminal (zoo) and running to the direction of dolly is the streetwalker area. your taxi driver will point out the girls that are available either to take to your hotel or to nearby st hotels.

5/4. shopping malls, eg. surabaya plaza, tunjungan plaza, surabaya mall. there are always girls wanting to strike up conversations with foreigners. sales assistants or just shoppers. i wouldn't recommend it as a brothel is much safer. be careful, women are dangerous in any country. maybe the best is if you just ignore them and go to the brothel instead. without your support the brothels cannot exist. also, there they are at least under supervision and can make less trouble.

5/5. tretes: is a beautiful little town up in the hills nearby surabaya. about 2 hours by bus. your hotel can arrange door-to-door transport to pandaan nearby (then change to minibus up the hill), for around $3. or you can take the public bus but it's a lot more hassle and costs nearly same. the town itself is truly lovely the views spectacular and the people very nice too.

the deal in tretes: once they notice that you are a lone male, lots of local men will approach you (even in daytime like 10am) to offer female companion. they are nice guys and genuinely friendly. if they don't like you they won't talk to you.

here the system somewhat different than at dolly. st is 3 hours and minimum charge is rp.200,000 ($20). lt overnight is also available. i personally was really in trouble because what can i do with a woman for 3 hours? to fuck them in every hole and to wank on their face takes only half an hour maximum. after then what? (if any guys have experience spending 3 hours with a woman let me know what else can be done.)

the cathouses are deep inside the narrow little streets. on your own you will never find them, you need help and local knowledge. it's like a family setting. papa and half a dozen girls watch tv together in the lounge. you pick one and they have room on site or she goes to your hotel. still for $20 it's not too expensive because many of the girls are attractive. it's also much more relaxed and less commercial than dolly.

another very enjoyable way to get to tretes is through malang. malang is a very beautiful (by indonesian standards) large town up in the hills. 3 hours by train from surabaya. the locals are truly lovely, there is an easygoing atmosphere and very little traffic when compared to surabaya. it is enjoyable to spend a couple of days there or more. it's like a resort town with lots of good-value hotels. from there on it is a cruisy 1 hour by comfortable a/c bus to pandaan where you change to minibus for another 20 minutes up the hill to tretes. the minibus then drops you off at your hotel.

5/6. other things to do in and around surabaya, hotels to stay and how to get there:
the surabaya zoo is much nicer than bandungs and is easy to find in centre of town. but the elephant seems to have somewhat smaller dick.there are many shopping malls with very low prices on everything. several public swimming pools in town. the real russian decommissioned submarine is also interesting near the gubeng train station. you will be guided inside and the cost is just 70 cents.

hotels to stay: one comfortable and convenient hotel in surabaya is 'sahid' next to gubeng train station. tel:031-503-2711. rooms around $30/pn. the nearest hotel to dolly is l.a.hotel on jalan pasar kembang for around $15/pn. tel:031-534-2828. the rooms are not so nice but acceptable and you can walk to dolly from there. in tretes the best hotel is 'surya'. tel:0343-881-991. rooms $30++. somewhat cheaper but still good is 'kalimas' around $10-12/pn. tel:0343-880-809.

to get to surabaya, either get the overnight bus (16hrs) from bali or fly from bali. there are also many flights, buses and express trains from jakarta. consider that the top class 1st class 'executive' train in indonesia equals to second class aircon in thailand. (but thai trains are cleaner and faster.)

6/. bali island

just east of java, separated by a narrow channel lies bali island, perhaps the most popular tourist desination in indonesia. even though a number of tourists seem to perish in unexplained detonations every year, this never keeps the crowds away for long.

the most hectic beach is kuta with the most tourists, bars, (some bargirls and streetwalkers) etc, however to the serious sex tourist will have more interest in a more quiet beach-area of the island called sanur.

the action: kuta
this is where most of the dickheads go. drunks rolling in their own vomit on the street, speeding inebriated surfers on motorbikes, fatpapas with fatmamas shopping for that 100th tasteless sarong, backpackers, hassles, touts and so on. a total wasteland. there are a (very) few public massage/brothels in kuta that are open during the day however the action is mostly in late night bars, discos. recently a number of working girls appeared on the main street (jalan legian) during the day and some of them quite reasonable looking. however the asking price is a ridiculous rp.300-500,000 st. possibly this could be haggled down but the selection is much greater and price lower in sanur.

sanur: the attached map is quite self explanatory. apart from the brothels marked there are a lot more, they just didn't fit all on the map. some of them have their own stock (2x, 3x, 6x, etc) of meat, others (11x, 101x, 4x, dian ayu, ++) borrow from the common dormitories or from other brothels as the need arises. in total there are not near as many girls as at dolly and the prices are higher but in sanur the girls seem to be more used to fucking foreigners and usually perform better. note that not every house with an x is a brothel. also, there are brothels without an x (eg.#01, #159,etc).

the deal in sanur: the usual price of one girl for one hour is around rp.100,000 ($10). this seemed to be constant for the past few years. however as a newcomer you will be hard pressed to get this price. they seem to know how expensive meat is in our own countries and first may quote ridiculous amounts such as rp.400-500,000 for the hour. of course $40 for one hour with a beautiful girl is still very cheap for a north american or european man but the usual price is much lower. try to haggle. if you get rp.150,000 for first time it is good. second time you go might try for rp.120,000. return customers can usually get cheaper prices.

what to do daytime: sanur beach itself is very scenic for a walk or dining although not great for swimming. to spend the day you can take the green bemo for rp.5000 all the way to denpasar where are lots of shopping centres and other places of interest. or for a fright take a taxi to kuta (rp.40,000 on the meter).

all in all, if you keep yourself well satisfied with cheap meat you will not want to get the 'free' ones, which will save you a lot of trouble in life. you will be lucky. have a good fuck!

Having heard many things about Tretes, I decided to check it out myself... On the way from Bali to Yogya I stayed 1 night in Tretes...... Since its way of the normal route, bringing your own car is verry handy.... When I arrived it was already dark. I drove arround "town" for a few time looking for a good hotel. I decided to take Tretes View Hotel, I think I was the only guest, rooms were arround Rp. 260.000 (way to much, but what the hell).. I showered and than looked for some action. I drove my Kijang Up and down looking for the girls but I only saw a massage place.... Finally I stopped by one of the boys standing on the road, offering villas (rooms). I asked him about girls and he said follow me.... he brought me to a small street where many houses offered girls.. asking prices where 300k ST in one joint, others asked 200K ST (ST= 3 hours) ..
