Just finished a visit to Surabaya, a return visit after a gap of over 10 years. Only had 1 free night in town (first night was busy working with my non-mongering boss) so had to make sure I didn’t waste any time. As such, I made sure I RTFF!! It was well worthwhile! A papa-san gave me the details, a little more expensive than the first place, but still only US$12. Kept trying to get him down, but no go. Besides, still very cheap. A cute young hottie in blue was getting my old fella stirring, so asked for her. Again, back to her room, for a quick wash of the nether regions before getting down to action. No problems getting her to start BBBJ. This went on for 15 mins before she started complaining of lockjaw, so I took pity on her & asked her to stop. Band finished 2:15, but then the backing music came on, with some great hard house dance music. Really got me bopping along. Not a good place for mongering, but a great regular bar. And the staff are really hot as well!

Finally headed to bed 2:45. The evening did not go exactly to plan, but was still quite satisfying. Top marks for Surabaya. Just wish I had photos!

On a side note, I was pleased that all the taxis I took during the night were happy to use the meter. Even staggering out of Dolly during the early hours of the morning on a weeknight, the taxi driver was happy to use the meter. Normally in a lot of countries this is ripe territory for extortion by unscrupulous drivers. Fare from Sheraton to Dolly was about 15k each way.

I went to Dolly for the first time last week, after reading all of this forum. Went with 3 in an hour before I ran out of steam. I bought some "extr-Safe" from a warung on arrival in the area; They crack open a box of 24 for you and allow you to buy just as many as you want. Paid 12K for 3. I couldn't agree more. There is strong evidence that various sexual and injecting-drug-user networks in Indonesia overlap significantly, creating an ideal environment for the spread of HIV. Although HIV infection is still rare among female sex workers in many areas, some parts of the country have recorded HIV prevalence levels as high as 8-17% in this population.

Condoms work, HIV will not permeate a latex condom. You can still have fun, but just be careful and protect yourself.

Good news on the Dolly front, was there last Thurs, (sorry to any reading Hindus),and the place was rocking, loads of totty, everyone in a good mood. It was great to see. I have been in Surabaya for 3 weeks now and have had several visits to the infamous Dolly red light district. All taxis will know it. The place appears a little daunting on your first visit and the pimps can be a pushy with their wares but it's actually quite safe and there's an endless number of brothels and girls. You can walk around and have a look in a few places till you find a girl you like. It's a good idea to ask for price before you buy especially if you are a foreigner. Standard of girls there is quite decent. You can find some stunners if you look around a bit.

The service can vary quite a bit though. I had a girl who was just going through the motions, no smile, 5 second BJ, but I've also had a couple of girls who will knock your socks off! Long BJ, great sex in multiple positions, and very GF feeling. One even gave me a 30 min massage after. Unfortunately you can't really tell what kind of service you'll get just by looking at the girl, so just pick one that looks good to you and give her a try. At around Rp. 80,000 for 1 - 1.5 hour session it's very affordable to sample numerous girls.

If you find a girl you like most places will let you take the girl to your hotel for around Rp. 160,000 for 2-3 hours. I find it worthwhile to pay more to take the girl away as the rooms in Dolly can be a bit dirty and uncomfortable.

There is a brothel with ok rooms and the quility of girls is noticeable better than the others. The price is higher at Rp. 120,000 for an hour. Take the left road in Dolly it's about half way down on the right side. It looks quite differrent to the other brothels and there are about 30+ girls there sitting behind glass like the massage places in Thailand. Sorry for the vague directions, but I can't remember the name of this place.

Yes the Mandarin is a lovely hotel and like all hotels in Indonesia is girl friendly. It's a really sumptious old fashioned hotel, the AC is ice cold and the bathrooms are elegant and inviting.

For best price check out the Hotel booth at SUB airport you'll get a good deal there.

DJ Monger is correct in that it's similar to the Raffles in Sing, they were both built by the same company way back when hotels were stylish and luxurious and not glorified chicken coops.

It was originally called the Oranje Hotel and was a bastion of Dutch loyalists at the time of independence. Famously one rebel climbed the roof and took down the Dutch flag, red, white and blue stripes and tore off the blue strip thus producing an Indonesian flag and stuck it back up again. This caused a riot which led to the Brits intervening (they were there as occupying power) eventually a battle ensued at the end of which half of Surabaya was razed to the ground but in which the rebels fought with great courage - thus Surabaya's name; the City of Heroes. There's an ugly monument to the battle just around the corner from the hotel.

Anyway apologies for the history lesson, enjoy your stay at the Mandarin.

I appreciate the responses. Good to hear that the place is girl friendly, I guess that's true of just about everywhere in Indonesia.

Looking forward to it, love that old SEA vibe. the Sarkies bros hotels had a grace and elegance that just isn't found in the modern world. also very interested in Surabaya, for reasons that are somewhat complicated. I've often found that I have unusual experiences in out of the way places that are under appreciated by typical travelers. we'll see.

also thinking of spending a couple days in trestes, maybe get in a round of golf or two and check out the girls up there.
