Capsule hotels don't allow non-guests at all (and are usually male only to boot). They also usually keep your shoes downstairs to make sure you settle the bill in the morning. Business hotels and/or smaller hotels may have a variety of restrictions. They often have curfews of around 11:00 PM, guests/visitors are not permitted (as I mentioned before, some have cameras in the hall and will charge you double rates for that day* if a guest goes to your room), and I've seen small countryside hotels that did not allow you to bring in outside food or drink. Basically, if the lobby has been arranged in such a way that you have to pass closely by the front desk to get to the elevators, you can probably safely guess that they don't allow visitors to the room.Good hotels (3 star and up) will almost certainly not have these restictions.*Japanese hotels typically charge by the person - so the rates are roughly double for two.

It does depend on the hotel. MOST are not worried about visitors to single rooms, and in fact some have elevator access that bypasses the front desk. Of course the bed is so small you might wish you had paid for a double (usually 30-50% more).However I have been to a couple business hotels which were quite careful-so much so the DH agencies in town told me I would need to visit another hotel in order to be serviced.If you can check in after 9pm, a love hotel is the best option for the night.

Pretty sure there was a post just a few back where someone told me the opposite, that hotels in general don't care... so is this a rare thing, and you're saying they'd charge double rate just for that day of them visiting, or they'd double your entire bill (if you were staying 2 weeks and they only visited a day they'd double the 2 weeks bill ect.)

I've been there a few times and the service was so-so and I never needed to ring a bell. If you don't speak Japanese, it might be challenging, I can't say one way or another but if you walk in and speak moderate Japanese, the shop master will welcome you with open arms. My experiences were not bad, not good, just OK and you can't beat the price. Chinese places are hit or miss, mostly miss but it depends on the girl. Most of them are in a bad way, one way or another so you can't blame them for not getting into their work.The shop master gave me his keitei number and said that it's a better number to call ahead.
