Endowed,Of course, I can?t answer for them, but I?ll give my best guess, starting with a general view of the alien sex monger and the sex-for-pay establishments in Nippon. With a regular fuzoku (seikans, imekuras, etc.) there are the obvious concerns of language, knowing what to expect, getting a girl that will accept gaijin, fears of uncleanliness / disease in non-Japanese, and general fear of the unknown, that make it easy to turn away the foreign monger. From the management?s point of view it?s probably too much bother or too risky to justify the limited income that a single or a few gaijin bring in. Then there?s an extra hurdle with these parties. These are ostensibly circles or clubs, and the management has to find players that won?t upset other players?an important consideration for Japanese. (See my earlier post for possibilities on how foreigners might upset, or make J-men feel uncomfortable at these parties.) Again, why risk alienating your main customer base (J-men) for one or a few unknown foreigners? From this point of view, it?s not hard to see why saying no to foreigners is so easy for them.Concerning the specific situation you mentioned, again I couldn?t answer for them, but it seems they might have one more reason to find it too troublesome (another communication barrier) and even easier to decline. Having said that, I don't think it's hopeless--I think the best option for clearing this would be if he found someone (preferably a regular Japanese who?s attended the party before) to explain the situation to the management, get okayed, and take him to the party and kind of be his sponsor. Once in, I don?t think there would be a problem. A foreigner can build some trust, alleviate some of the fears and turn his ?foreigness? into an advantage. Even at these parties, for example, Japanese like to try out their English with a foreigner and I happily oblige them. Show them that you?re respectful, can get along with the others, are not a problem, etc., and you can come back without worry. As I mentioned in my last post, I make sure to chat and joke with the J-men. I?ve even developed a sense of camaraderie with some that I find hard to achieve in more regular situations. My last night in Japan: I am staying in Tokyo but was intrigued by reports about Kogane-cho ? so I set out for Yokohama by train (Tokaido line from Shinbashi, but there are lots of other ways to get there - just ask your hotel information desk).
