Though an avid reader of this forum I usually don't write much due to valid reasons. However I do when I see that the information is outdated or not current. Bishkek forum is certainly outdated and doesn't have all the information to arm the punter. The following are my observations about this city after spending considerable amount of time here.

1. The city is very unsafe and violent attack on foreigners are not uncommon. It is much worse in the nights. Even the locals care for their safety with keeping their doors well locked in the nights. You will notice that there a lot of people including girls who wander around in the city during the nights but certainly not a good idea for anyone not looking kryg. Even the bars / clubs are a little unsafe with a lot of drunk krygs looking to start a fight in the dance floor and more so in the restrooms. Be careful while crossing the roads and watch out for potholes.

2. The cabbies don't know much about the bar / club scene. Many a times they don't even know the popular bars. So keep the addresses of bars / clubs written down somewhere before heading out. The city is soviet styled and well spread out. The standard price seems to be 70/100/120/150 depending on the distance.

3. Most of the bars / clubs are boring with very few people around during the weekdays. Weekends are better but expect to pay a cover charge.

4. In the clubs 80 to 90 of the population are devushkas. Not much men usually. The dance floor is usually 95% devushkas. Dancing in this city is outright boring as the devushkas usually don't prefer physical contact. They prefer to dance a meter or two apart. Hard to motivate yourself to dance. I found the dj music to be very good almost all night in most of the clubs here.

5. Retro Metro. Interesting and a lots of good looking devushkas here. Cover charge almost very night 350+ soms / 500+ weekends. Hard to pick up though. One could get a couple of numbers.

6. XS- Thursdays free. Weekends 500+ somas. Your chances are considerably less if you don't look obvious American. Age / appearance / charm don't seem to matter. Look american and you may have a decent time. I found the same girls every time I went there. Infact they were in the same location in the bar area.

7. Golden Bull / Fire and Ice. No cover charge (they seem to make this up with girlie drinks in a subtle manner that you may not realise). Same owner. Golden Bull is now called FM bar. Devushkas are usually not very good looking. Business is run here in a highly unethical manner. Watch out for bartender shooting up the bill. Some Russian girls especially seem to have understanding with the staff luring you to buy drinks. Don't make this mistake. They seem freebies on the outset looking for fun. But watch out. All the unsold sauna girls / apartment prostitutes turn up here later in the night. The fact that they don't ask money upfront doesn't make them freebies. Some may tell you that they will return the money in a week or so. This is the reason that this place doesn't get going until 3am / 4am. Occasionally some genuine girls do turn up.

8. Arbat. Older crowd. Was never busy 2 or 3 times I was here. You can get free vouchers to enter this place in popular hotels and shopping complexes when you buy something.

9. Saunas / Apartments. Cab drivers keep locating them on the classifieds. If you can find a reliable english speaking cabbie he could do the work for you happily. Once you are there they would bring girls from various agencies. In a good sauna you could typically choose from may be 30 to 50 girls. They never seem to get upset even if U-turn down all of them. Price for the sauna 400 to 1000 / hr. The price for the girl depends but usually from 1500 to 2000 / hr.

10. 312. Kg. Much like an escort service. Use google translate and search for VIP. They will bring the girls to your apartment. Again they don't seem to get upset if U-turn them down. Some level of Russian speaking capability is required. But some of them do speak english. Hard to narrow down as there are too many numbers. A agency may have just one girl but will advertise with 5 to 7 different numbers. So it can be very confusing.

11. Heaven / dostuk. Cover charge 200 som on a weekday. 100 som if you sit somewhere. I was the only person on the night I went. 100*2 = 200 for the taxi ride totally costing me 500 soms to a place more boring than my own apartment.

12. American Bar. Called Metro bar now. Average age is 60. Should I say more.

13. Apartments. Cheap and easy to find. Call some agency numbers and they will somehow find it out for you as everyone gets 10% commission. Don't negotiate on per day basis if you staying for more than a week. Typically in centre you pay 250-450 USD / couple of weeks to a month

General observation. The girls once in your apartment seem usually well behaved. They don't seem to explicity ask for money if you had taken them from bars / clubs. But if you don't pay don't expect to see her again. The working girls seem to break the conventional wisdom of not asking money directly thus giving a punter an impression that she is a freebie trying to sleep with a foreigner but mostly they are in fact some sauna / apartment girl that you happen to meet in the club. The genuine freebies are very ugly. I would refuse them even if they are ready to pay for having sex with me.

Will I ever go again. No. Boring unsafe place. Good looking girls seem to act stuck up as there are a very few of them. But opportunities does exist to meet some nice intelligent devushkas if you have channels outside of the bar / club scene. But this is true even in other countries too and you are much better off in other places.

Landed in Almaty last Thursday and did the regular taxi trip to Bishkek. Not much seems to have changed except that things seem a little bit more expensive. Used 312. Kg and got talking to a girl who spoke english. She's been sending some girls who speak a bit of English to my apartment. Prices seem to range from 2000 to 3000 per hour. They seem pretty open to talking to you directly as well.

Of course they want to stay back after to drink and maybe turn a couple of more tricks. So far have got a couple of freebies courtesy a couple of "Halal's" and few vodka bottles.

Security seems to be a concern. It seems pretty dangerous to go out alone. Taxi travel only at night is what is suggested. Still have not gotten to the clubs.

All in all, seems to be the same.

IMHO, Tashkent is much nicer, safer, and welcoming. The Uzbek population is also much more diverse than the Kyrgiz population. Plenty of Russian-ethnic and persian-ethnic chicks in Tashkent, contrarily to Bishkek where most are from Central Asian descent.

Thanks for pointing out the link! I just read it; one of the best reports on a city I have ever read. I wonder if the chicks are really so bad to look at. I have one girl from Bishkek on my facebook. I have never considered Uzbekistan but I do recall you mentioning on these boards its one of your favorite destinations. I am curious to look into it. I have to admit Kazakhstan is very high on my list, too.

i discovered an amazing de-luxe spa, the s'legkim parom (117a, ibraimova str / chui prospect (building of the shoes factory 'cholpon') , which is usually translated "enjoy your bath," derived from a famous russian movie. anyway, it is an amazing place with hot and cold pools, whirlpool, turkish ("roman") bath, russian bath, massage, scrubs, manicures, etc. with excellent separate facilities for both sexes.

i've been there twice, and had two excellent scrubs (nude, my johnson periodically inflating and waving around) , and a massage (ditto, except bobbing up and down under a sheet) , and i didn't get the slightest hint that i could get a hand job / happy ending (all i wanted at the moment). during the all-important stomach rubbing there was no eye contact, nothing that i could interpret as a come-on. the massage lady's face wasn't anything much, but the scrub gal was a real cutie. is there a secret? a code word? does one slip cash in? all payments for regular services are at the front desk based on your locker number, so it would be unusual to take cash in.

someone help me out. at this point i think it may be too squeaky clean for a hj, or i was just too foreign for them to consider that i might want one. it's just that i hate not knowing. if i'm sure there's nothing available i'll just enjoy myself and head off for a sauna later.

answering my own post here, as usual on this forum. i've been back quite often to the s'legkim parom and it remains very nice, with an excellent manicurist and some excellent massage staff. this time i had a less-than-awesome leg-massage and for the first time the gal tried to upsell me for a hand-job. stupidly, i agreed to get a scrub in one of the "vip rooms." it was a quickie top / bottom scrub not nearly as good as the 300 som scrub available on the ground floor, but concluded with one of the worst hand jobs ever. i should have been paid for instructing her! it was the exact opposite of "sensual." for 1, 500 som! i think i'll go back to plain old scrubs at the parom. by the way, the construction fence area just north of this place is chock-full of street girls after 8:30 or so. it is also the hangout for a couple of local cops who have tried to stop me. i make a practice of walking very fast, giving them a quick hand shake and "hello!" and carry on at high speed. i've yet to meet a bishkek patrolman who will run. last year my pal lost $200 from his wallet while one of these clowns was "inspecting his documents."

A few years ago the sauna at the Dostuk was staffed by a couple of nice Russian girls who spoke enough English to help set up nice afternoon and evening meets with working girls. They left, and I had to look elsewhere, but-hooray! The Dostuk sauna is back. Olla manages the place, and she speaks functional English and is very pleasant to work with. I explained what I was looking for and she made several calls to provide a choice of suitable girls. She also does a good "medical" massage, so don't look for extras from her. The sauna was hot, as was the water, with the usual TV / DVD player in a small lounge, with bedroom & private bath, etc. The price was the best part: 1, 200 som for the girl and 700 som for an hour of the sauna. That included two beers, towels, and soap. I think she quoted 1, 500 som / hour, but maybe I got the early-bird rate.

Is not as bad as I expected. High quality is at VIP club, but You have to be 21. 30-23. 30. Later free girls are going to Port Said. Be careful because there is a lot of normal people so don't make mistake. Take Your own taxi, but You can also find another.

Port Said is lower level but plenty of free girls for about 100$. Good variety, so You will be not bored at Dushanbe.
