Decided to move on from Lane Zang Hotel (Had nice looking little spinner behind reception desk) as it has rather an unfortunate smell pervading it ... smells like boiled cabbage! As I intend to visit Anou nightclub tonight I decide a stay at the Anou Hotel is best solution.

At the moment it is cold up there for the time of year. about 12-15 C at night and 25+ during the day. Cold by Laos standards but beats Europe!

I would recommend that you give Penguin + Anou nightspots a whirl... sure you will not be disappointed.

Well moved on from Nong Khai and now in Ventiane. Stayed at Lane Zang Hotel, Reasonable room with good shower facilities overlooking Mekong, Baht 1200 per night with breakfast. Hotel proved to be guest friendly.

After reading ReallyaNiceGuy's reports made straight to Penguin nightclub, great directions can't miss it. After reading so many reports on ISG I confused posts and balls'ed it up getting there at 8.00 pm when it doe's not really get going to 9ish as mentioned by RaNG. Anyway as the only person there this meant I was able to have a long chat with mamasan who confimed that Ming as recommended by RaNG was in that evening and I therefore got in first.

A short bit about Penguin nightclub, it seems new had a good cabaret/singers a mixture of Thai and a few farangs patrons but well organised and a room full of cuties to check out! Anyway Ming speaks bugger all English but we seemed to get on well so it was agreed she would come back with me to the hotel Baht 2,000 LT. Being first in I now find my car boxed in but the car park boy soon found car owner and on our way swiftly.

Well Ming as mentioned by RaNG does the usual Thai trick of undressing under a towel and then showering but once in bed removes towel, well it was pretty cold in Ventiane during my stay so we are soon cuddling under the sheets. After having read the reports on the Mekong nightclub I went there on my first night and it was a disaster. Some reports have said you need to get there before 9 PM so I got there shortly after 8 PM and I was the only customer. As has been said before, the waiters are useless. They tried to get me to sit down in the empty nightclub. I asked to see the girls and was taken to the side room with about 60 girls sitting there. There is a very nice selection but the waiter just opened the door and then left, so it was me standing there alone looking like a prize idiot with 60 girls staring straight at me. I walked out and asked to see the mamasan. She came in the room with me but was useless as she spoke no English. Then there was a lot of farting around (with the girls staring at me) while an English-speaking waiter came along. We chatted for a bit (the girls still staring) about short time rooms but the Mekong Hotel doesn't have any so if you want to root a girl there you have to pay for a room for a night. He said there were short time hotels nearby and that I should ask the girls. So, the time has finally come to pick a girl to go and have a drink with in the nightclub. I asked the waiter what girl he recommends. He pointed to a very nice girl and I agreed but when he approached her she refused to go with me. Well, that was ultra embarrassing with all those girls staring at me and me being the only customer. I decided to leave and the waiter suddenly became more animated, pointing to a fat girl and saying 'How about her?' I'd already told him that I liked thin girls so I just walked away with him calling out 'Maybe come back at 9'. No thanks.

I remembered that Anou Cabaret had been recommended in a report so I went there and had a great time. It's just around the corner from the touristy area next to the river where the smaller, cheaper hotels and guesthouses and restaurants are. I walked in to Anou and there was a much more relaxing atmosphere. A band of some sort was playing and I sat down and ordered a drink. At the back there is a room with a large window that you can look through with about 10 girls inside. I had a reasonable view from where I was sitting but a very pleasant English-speaking mamasan came and asked me if I wanted a beautiful lady. I said I did and she went into the room and came back with a very nice girl and asked if she was OK. I said yes and sat with her for a while. She was older than I normally go for (said she was 22 but I guess she was a bit older) but spoke good English and was very nice. I paid her 1500 baht for short time and 350 baht for a ST room in Anou, which was a very pleasant room. The sex wasn't great and the tits were smaller than they seemed in the bar because of the padded bra but I was happy enough. She wanted my phone number and asked me to come back the next day.

In short, I paid about 2000 baht for a reasonable root with a nice girl. I get better experiences for that price in Pattaya or Bangkok so I wouldn't recommend Vientiane. Can some members who have had success there give us some more details about what they did? I can't see that it's possible to have a good time there if you don't speak Thai or Lao because the staff are just too useless but maybe there's a way.

Yes, I've had similar experiences at both places. It's been good and bad - first time to mekong it was great, had a real petite babe (a real tightie) - but she would only CBJ - no BBBJ. I agree with you - overall, it's best to stick with Thailand as it costs about the same, and you don't need to worry about the police, etc. It's just more lively, more choices and more 'sanuk'. Laos is good for cheap beer and chilling out - and the occassional monger..(when you can't get the office girls out of your head..)

After finding that place Futures I thought I’d look further down the road to see if there was anything that looked interesting. I found three places. I’ll save the best one for last.

Joker – Couldn’t really tell what it was during the day but when I went back that night I found it was a very small locals KTV. When I went in there were 7 girls and 3 guys plus 3 people working the bar, all in there 20’s. It’s a dark dirty place, very low keyed and low tech. When I went inside there were maybe 10 more here and there around the club. It’s about the same layout as Mekong, stage with different singers, a dance floor, chair/booths around the outside and it’s dark. A waiter showed me to a table around the corner and in the back, very private. With his flashlight he showed me the drink choices, all in Lao, and ordered a Coke.
I saw this door, not far from where I was sitting, and there was a steady flow of girls in and out of the room. I wasn’t shown the room like it was a fishbowl but it might be, although the girls came and went so much that maybe it’s just where they change and hang out.

They leave and go into that room for a few minutes and then return to tell me that it’s OK for me to pay after, I confirm ST $30.00 and LT $60.00, they agree and then I tell them that I want LT for $60.00 but if Ming doesn’t like me or I don’t like her after ST either one of can call it a night, again she explains this to Ming, they talk and she said Ming understands and was OK with that, I said OK we have a deal, I shake the ladies hand and Ming gives me a kiss. I ask where the bill is and the lady said she’d get it while Ming changes.
This is interesting, the waiter brings me the bill, it’s only 65,000 Kip, I don’t understand why but I hand the guy 70,000 and tell him to keep the change. Maybe if you take the girl out they wave the sitting charge.

Directions – All three of these places are in the same area. Driving on Samsenthai Road, one way going east toward the airport, past where it merges and becomes Luangphabang, past Novotel Hotel, on the right hand side down a little bit is Future Music Pub.
Keep going a little bit more and on the right hand side will be Penguin Night Club, just past the Shell gas station.
