Just fresh from a few days in the valley and will give an update as things change fast here (at least in the world of mongering). The following options are open to anyone so lack of language or familiarity with Kathmandu should not be an issue. Any taxi driver can get you to Thamel to find the action.

Maoists: they are part of the government now, so much of the threat in the countryside is gone. They never really focused on tourists anyhow, and routes in the east, like those to and around Everest, did not have much of a presence. They used to charge a RS/1000 tax, but did not hear about that this round. They occasionally get the urge to enforce morality, so once every so often they close down the girly entertainment. But they are as corrupt as the next political party, so this is only temporary and things will usually get back to normal very quickly.

Massage parlours: Thamel still has plenty of them so you will not have look to hard to find a spot. I think the girls are getting better looking too. Maybe the massive influx from the south and west to escape Maoists and poverty has increased the work force? If you stick to your guns, for the price of a Maoist tax (RS/1000) you can have any of the girls for a quick romp. Scout around, find something you like and make the offer.

Dance bars: They no longer feature full nudity. The police are putting the pressure on, but these things come in phases. I tried to get one of the girls to meet me the next day after she gave me her phone number, but she chickened out and ask me to just come the dance bar again. I suppose with perseverance one could make it happen, but I didn’t have the patience, especially with so many other options. There are dozens of these bars, and I only visited a few, so there is exploration yet to be done.

Brothels: Yes, there are now dens of iniquity mainly in the Thamel area. Room and choice of girls for RS/1500. The boys in Thamel now offer “Massage?” along with “Hash? Marijuana? Something?” Or ask a rikshaw driver if you don’t get the offer and are interested. You will not have to leave the main area, so don’t go on a long goose chase.

Things to watch out for:

Hotels in Thamel are pretty loose, and most of the parlors / brothels are in hotels, so if is not much of a problem. But if you are late, and the hotels are a bit more observant, they might give you a hard time and not let your company join you. Larger hotels like the Annapurna will not let you bring in girls for pleasure. You can sneak them in, but this is chancy.

Hijra are also now gathering in Thamel, just as you enter from the Palace, and are fairly aggressive in approaching people. They are pretty obvious as just men dressed in drag, but in the dark it can sometimes be hard to tell. If any female looking creature approaches you in the street with offers, beware as you can be sure s/he has an extra package.

Pollution is getting really bad these days, and it is common to get a cough after a day or two. This will get better in the monsoon when rains wash the city.

Power outages now consume most of the day, with only a few hours of light in the evenings. Not only does this make it difficult to get around, but the extra smoke from all the generators contributes to the already nasty pollution. The main danger though is falling in a hole in the sidewalk or street when trolling about, so take a light to brighten your path.

KATMANDU, Nepal -- Female rice farmers are plowing their fields at night in the nude to please the rain god during a dry spell in southwestern Nepal, a news report said Sunday.

A 35-year-old farmer, Ambika Tharu, said she and other women were daring to bare all for the rain god because of a delay in the annual monsoon season and the need for precipitation for their rice crops.

"My mother-in-law said the God would be pleased and make rainfall if women till the land naked," Tharu told the Himalayan Times newspaper.

The delay of the monsoon rains, which usually begin in the first week of June in Nepal, have prevented farmers from planting rice.

Weather forecasters in the capital Katmandu 310 miles northeast of Baijapur village, where the naked farmers are appealing for rain said the situation is expected to improve in the next few days.

anyone of you knows/experienced if this situation with the maoists can have some concrete impact on the classic nepal-vacation, namely trekking, visiting Kathmandu and eventually some mongering.

I've read on the "lonelyplanet" site that Nepal lists together with 21 other countries as destinations with "ongoing warnings". Just to illustrate my sayings, Nepal is on the same list as Palestina, Iraq, Angola, Haiti, Chechnya and other countries we are used to hear of in the news.

My question and my hope, the situation isn't as bad as it looks, is it?

nepali babes are some of the hottest on the planet. the less educated ones do not bath as often as they should, and are often not real active or experienced, but are worth the time and money.

do not be vulgar with the girls, as the ones in nepal are not as used to strong language as girls in indian brothels.

your best bet is massage parlours. there is a growing number of westernized girls who go to discos and what not, but many people spend years in nepal and never manage to score. so gauge your chances on that angle if you like.

prices should never go beyond 2000 rupees, and and that is a high end price. there are occasions when a private call girl might ask more, but you will not find this type of activity in the parlours.

be direct in the parlours with what you want. i used to go in and ask in english for some action. the girls, thinking i could not understand, would discuss the options. "does he work for the hotel manager? is he police?" but once you gain their trust they are pretty willing. bring your own rubbers.

there are other places, such as tea stands by bus stops and such, but again, these are hard to find and you can waste a lot of time on it (i have). i have even picked up girls wandering around thamel, but again, this took years and language ability to access. so if you are passing through, keep your eyes open, but don't count on it.
