after a trek, landed in thamel for an r&r break. decided to go for a massage to loosen the cramps and aches. there began the problems – it was somewhat difficult to find a genuine “masseur” – most massage parlors in thamel offer everything else but a decent massage. finally found one place with a qualified masseur – can highly recommend it to fellow trekkers.

thamel is dotted with massage parlors where there certainly is more on offer in addition to a massage. avoid the massage unless you believe that a few thumps with a loose hand dabbed in engine oil (they call it ayurvedic/ herbal oil) is massage.

the crowd available in these parlors range from scrap at the bottom of barrel filled with warm spit to the ones floating on the top. but the same barrel full of warm spit, that is. absolute ugly to passably ok girls can be found in these parlors, so check out a number of them before you decide. if you wish to have only sex, ask for it upfront from the proprietor. going rate is rupees 500-800 although the guy will quote 2k for st. but be prepared for disappointments as well; the girls rarely speak english and any monger getting anything other that a missionary should consider himself lucky. business generally starts at around 11.00 am and rarely proceeds beyond 7.30- 8.00 pm.

another fad these days are the dance bars. some of the prettiest faces and bodies can be seen prancing around in sexy outfits on a stage to the beats of nepali and bollywood pop. the ones on jyatha are nothing mush to write about. but there are two joints in thamel where the collection is quite good – 007 (opposite himalette café) and new pink palace (next to the yin yang restaurant). after 9.30 pm, the 007 dance bar puts on a few steamy numbers with mock sex routines. i found the new pink palace slightly classier with a better pick of girls and décor. the show begins after 6.30 pm and goes on till 2.00 am.

the girls at these dance bars are from villages and can barely speak a few words of english. they are non-pros and make around 7-10 k (around us$ 100) a month. their job is to do a number on the stage and then come down to mix with the patrons. you can pen down your requests, both for a dance or a particular girl, on a napkin and hand it over to the waiters. you need to buy them some drinks and food, which is the management’s way of making money. you may be able to run your hands over her while she’s at your table, nothing more is possible inside the bar. plus the language is a barrier as they can talk little else than nepali and a bit of hindi – english is very rare. strictly speaking, it is very difficult to score with them.

i adopted a different strategy which worked. there are a number of female waiters who take orders for your drinks and food. i befriended one from darjeeling, where i schooled. while she was a non-pro, but earning less than a dancer, she was willing. damage – 2k for a 3 hour non-hurried session. i managed to persuade her to get me two more such waiters – not exceptional beauties or performers in bed, but definitely cleaner and more fun than the massage parlor girls. be nice to them and win them over – requires some time and patience but is definitely easier to lay them than blowing a fortune over drinks for the dancers who at the end refuse to go out with you.

there are a number of cabin restaurants around the highways going out of the town. while i was unable to check any of them out, i do understand that sex is available.

i met a guy at one of the dance bars who claimed that pros and semi-pros are available, but was unable to check it out for lack of time. i would be happy to share his number if any monger wishes to check him out.

Mr Spence arrived bedraggled in Nepal after a total of eighteen hours, four of them spent looking at a pair of breasts the size of space hoppers behind a Costa Coffee in the transit lounge of the Sultanat of Oman. Forgive the lack of precise details because various months have passed since the trip but this is the main hangout for fellow Mr Spence's.

On entering massage parlours you will be shown a fancy laminated menu with over-inflated prices. Ignore this. Say the parlour down the road has quoted just 500 thingees, whatever. This will get you a massage for 2 hrs in oil or talc. You might have to pay 600. At the end of the very good oil massages, the girls will concentrate on the loins and buttocks usually resulting in a stiffy - they will then try to negotiate hand job, blow job, or full sex - an extra 500 will probably get the first two - you may have to stretch to 1000 extra to get the full works. So 1500 or thereabouts - about £15-18 for 2 hrs relaxation followed by closer examination and safe exchange of fluids has to be good value. Blow-jobs are usually owo.

Cruise the parlours until you find a girl who looks sexy. The areas to have massage and extras are hardly salubrious and sometimes only a thin curtain on a wire or plasterboard separates you from the Deputy Chief of the People's Army being de-spunked - so be prepared.

The other option is to get massage off a girl for a few days running and then suggest she come back to the hotel where, if you have a moderate-top-end hotel you can have all the privacy you want. Thamel is a real hotch-potch of nooks and crannies, it's good fun and there are lots of varied restaurants and bars to have a breather between other activities.

Larry took the lead of a previous report on Kathmandu on his last day - the one which lead him up past the Marajuana/herbal sign off one of the main squares and past a few offices on the second floor.

He had a fantastic time but noted that Nepalese women are quite modest in these places so you are likely to find yourself undressed/naked a lot more frequently than you de-robe the girls.

After a draining massage with a cutie he crossed the road to an internet cafe where he was approached by a well-dressed Nepali woman who had been chatting at the counter with the (female) manager. She brought Larry a slice of cake and suggested he come round the corner to see the new opening of a salon.

Heres the location guys, sorry no addresses but I can give directions

The bar where I picked up is at thamel and is called CHAHANA bar. walk from the royal palace towards thamel. turn left from the first crossing where the taxis usually hang out. walk about 150 mts and turn left again into a covered walkway. walk another 15 mts and you will see a stair going to first floor. Ask around if in Doubt and most taxi guys will know where this is.

The lady bar is close to the Radisson Hotel. walk from the radisson towards main road. turn right at the three way crossing and walk for another 300 mts or so. the bar is in the first floor to your left. there is a sign which says so. The entrance is from behind the building. a guy called Umesh runs the place, very friendly but the girls are 6-7/10 . The other bar is better and the food definately is. Always order beers coz the hard drinks and cocktails are diluted to save money.

The X bar is not doing so well, they became very popular over time and now get a lot of fistfights and brawls breaking out all the time. you don't want the cops in the same bar as you!

I just returned from a week long trip to Kathmandu and boy-o-boy the scene is even better now. Surely the quality of girls in some of the bars in thamel has improved. There's more and more coming to the city from the villages for the want of higher income. I even heard that some of these have boyfriends that live off their incomes.

I met this girl at the bar on one of the nights and she invited me over to her house on the outskirts of KTM where about seven of them live when they are off work. The place was shabby, needless to say and they all were crammed in two small rooms. I made it a point to carry some T-shirts and perfume bottles to give away. Your intuition seems pretty much right on - I'd combine what you're saying with Zipper's last post to provide a more complex picture of PFP in Nepal. In short, it's fairly easy to find SPs if you know where to go - but finding where to go is the difficult part and the context is constantly changing - as Bruce_Lee points out, the cabbie's who 'know' will still have to search around and as Zipper points out there is a high HIV rate within some segments of the SP population. Basically, there's three types of SPs in K-du: the country/village girls who've come to the city for economic or safety/security reasons, the locals who've seen the material effects of working their bodies, and the women returned from the brothels down in India.

No, I'm not Nepali, I'm an American who has lived in a remote village and district headquarters for a few years and who's lived in K-du among the locals for a few more years; no tourist traps or expat development worker lifestyle for me. Even so, I've never really cracked the shell of the PFP system there - I know quite a lot and made some in-roads - but being a kuire, I've never really gotten to the insides of the scene. For a while I had a lover who owned a MP in Thamel that was geared to the local elite so I got a good insider's perspective of that one aspect of Thamel, but not the broader scene. As Zipper pointed out, despite appearences in K-du, it's still at heart a very conservative society and letting a kuire in on the extent of things would have them loose face. My lover was a Magar from the Terrai, so she didn't much care about the culture loosing face, and many of the clients (e.g. some army brass, mid-high level bureaucrats, etc.) at her place would sit around and chat with me for hours - and while we joked about sex and typical 'guy talk' they never would give me straight answers about the larger scene.

I haven't been in-country now for over a year and I'm sure much has changed with both the providers and context. But, I'm sure the same rules apply, ask around, be respectful, check things out, and cross your fingers for luck. If you find a provider that you like, develop a rapport with her and she'll usually be able to broaden your horizons a bit - unless it's a MP, those greedy bastards want you to believe that their's is the only joint that has PFP.

Trust your intuition and instinct, it seems pretty reliable. My first PFP ever was in Nepal, but it wasn't until I experienced LOS that I developed any good sense for mongering. After LOS though, my horizons in Nepal broadened considerably.

the whole dance bar business in ktm is supposed to be discreet. making noise and disturbing the peace is certainly not what the nepalese want. somewhere beneath they are still a conservative society.

as one of the members pointed out that they do it for money, he cannot be more correct, tell me a place where they do not do it for money. nepal is a very poor country and most of these women come from the villages and are there to make an extra buck. it is so much better than getting married to some no good nepali villager and get raped anyway. there are good bucks to be made at the bar and it is a relatively good life for these villagers and plenty of pocket money to take home. most girls make on a night what they will not make in a month back at their village. throw in a few hundred nepali rupees to the waitress at the bar and she will give you a nice rub at the table. they always have stories of sick parents and failed crops back home. this is what the bar owners teach them to say when encountered with the customers or the cops. they make more money from sympathisers than anyone else.

these women have limited social skills and very little education to understand what is going on. they are just there for the money. we need to be careful not to hurt their feelings and specially not make out with the minors.

i do not recomment the cabbies as they can take you to places that may be dangerous from an aids point of view and you could potentially be robbed of all your belongings. try and stick to the public places and crowded areas.

the bars in thamel are pretty average. bars like x-bar and ladies bar away from thamel have much better quality of girls. they may be a bit more expensive but are certainly recommended. some of the girls i saw were 7-9, although not available to take out. this is changing as more girls get mature and feel safer venturing out with strangers.

another good place to look are the casinos, ask the girls discreetly while playing or loitering around and they will fix up with you or ask you to call on thier mobile. if you seem obvious expect a straight refusal.
